The sense of being an imposter has dominated my life, it wasn't until about 10 years ago that I knew that this was common and had a name. I play music with people who are trained musicians (I was not), I'm a senior programmer (I actually studied math and had very little computer science background), I'm a dad (and all I knew was I didn't want to do it the way that my dad did). I think the "guide not a guru" principle is what I've settled on organically, and so that resonated with me. When I've given presentations on topics, be it work or in teaching, the advice that worked best for me was "in this moment, and in this room, you're probably the most knowledgeable about this topic". 🎭

🎭 the difficulty I have is that I’m even too insecure and feel too dumb to convince myself it’s just an imposter syndrome and not real dumbness. Doing my PhD right now and feel absolutely clueless and unqualified to the point where I’m paralyzed to do anything productive, and the cycle continues 🙈 the thing with recognizing you have imposter syndrome is you have to convince yourself first that you deserve to be there in the first place and feeling like a fraud is just in your mind, and thus the paradox of it all.
@joemoon5656
@joemoon5656 3 жыл бұрын
Personally, feeling dumb is a lot smarter than feeling smart. They are two sides of the same coin and obviously there's a healthy/unhealthy tipping point, but far more important than feeling smart enough to be "qualified" is the feeling that no matter the outcome your heart's desire teamed up with even just tiny daily efforts will always take you where you need to be. No one deserves or undeserves the food in their plate but they effortlessly eat what they can handle regardless of their emotions or thoughts of what they "deserve". In other words humility and tenacity are the weapons of choice against any desert mirages of imposter syndrome as you gallop to Gol'town on a horse named Guide-not-guru! 🤠
@aabbas802
@aabbas802 3 жыл бұрын
That must be a difficult cycle to be stuck in. I know this is 1 month later, but I think that is where the input of others can be helpful. If there is someone that is genuinely benefitting from YOU explaining material, or they are enjoying YOUR conversations, then rather than questioning their comments simply trust that they mean what they say. And if you can help someone then you must be doing something right. And you are right about "recognizing imposter syndrome...feeling like a fraud..." which is why the idea behind faking it 'till you make it can be so fruitful oftentimes.

Perhaps parking your feeling part of self.brain? Now I'm only guessing that you have an analytical part of your brain .. & it knows you got a project to complete. So imho start with that side of your brain...plan it out, step by step... One at a time. Just like running a marathon. Just do it and don't judge yourself or your work. You've GOT THIS... trust and plan it out, research and write. Keep judgement part of brain to engage, maybe when in editing mode... When it's needed to guide you 'productively' and positively. All the best

I felt the same doing my masters. The culture in my department made the feeling worse. They laud people who are vocal and opinionated, but berate those who take longer to organize their thoughts and refine their opinions. You’re not dumb. If you’re anything like me, you just have a different pace and process. I spent 4 yrs doing a 2 yr masters course, with 1,5 yrs feeling paralysed. My supervisor made things worse by constantly saying my work wasn’t ready. I ended up submitting without his approval. But I passed and did really well. My advice is to take note of how you got there. Remember the work and effort of your undergrad yrs. They wouldn’t have accepted you for a PhD programme if you weren’t skilled. And while those around you might make you feel dumb by acting like gurus, they are also just guides. 🎭

Man, I've suffered from Imposter Syndrome my whole life and still do. When I got into my undergrad I thought it was a fluke, and then I thought the same thing about my Masters and throughout my career, every opportunity I receive feels undeserved. It's a real problem but I always try to remind myself that I'm a lot more critical of myself than others are of me and that it is okay to sometimes feel like an outsider. I can't always be perfect at everything I do but that's not a bad thing, it's an opportunity to grow. 🎭

🎭 Guru or guide, it doesn't matter to me. You're an inspiration, and I could honestly watch you all day. Humble, honest, incredibly bright, and an ability to teach concepts to people in a way that some gurus just couldn't make accessible. I aspire to emulate your success in my own niche. Thank you.

That's right, there's a lot of kwnoledge and information around in the form of books, courses, articles, etc. sometimes we need also the humanity and the perspective in that, not just the knowledge, or sometimes not even the knowledge.

“Sage on a Stage” versus “Guide on the Side” - you demonstrate a lot of humility - which I believe speaks to character. The downside of this humility is the dreaded Imposter Syndrome. Sometimes what we consider a simple truth can change a life. We only grow when we stretch our comfort zone - and that discomfort can invite self-doubt. BUT! Have no fear Mr. Abdaal - whether introducing me to something new or reminding me of something I needed to be reminded of - your channel is a wealth of value. An imposter you are not!

Thank you Ali, for putting yourself out there and been on HERE (KZbin). I just came across your video while watching about how to be blogger or if i should start writing one, even though i don't know what to write about. And watching your video made me make up my mind. Though this video was about imposter syndrome, which i don't even recall if i had it or not since this is the first time am learning about it, still your video was helpful. 🎭
