I've been playing a lot of Splatterhouse on TurboGrafx-16 lately and I thought it would be fun to go through the game and explain how to beat it. Enjoy!

To answer question, Jennifer is indeed dead, however, her soul is trapped in a crystal and you can rescue her in 2. 2&3 are 10x harder than this one, though. 2 is similar, but 3 is a maze and time based.

Great commentary. Back in the olden days I wrote one of the only gamefaqs guides on this game. Loved the game. I found the game by accident at a babbages for about half price. I had already rented Splatterhouse 2 and loved it, purchased it soon after. It was always mysterious because I never knew what the first game was on, or heard of it, so this was a great surprise. My favorite in the series.

If your thumb ever gets faster, you can use rapid punches to: 1) Repel all the boreworms from the far right side of the first boss room (with maybe the aid of 1 jump-kick), 2) Corner the painting when it's all the way left or right-and-down, and 3) Get an easy 1-3 hits on Mirror Rick as they appear, You just taught me how to beat Possessed Jennifer more easily. Neat. Lore Note: In American canon, that boss was a demon in disguise and the real Jennifer gets rescued from her prison in the second game. But in Japanese canon, that boss you killed was actually a possessed Jennifer, and the second game is you going to Hell to bring her back to life.

Playing this game when it came out in 1990 was unreal. To put it in perspective it came out 2 months after the release of Super Mario 3. Talk about a night and day difference. I mean the darkest, most violent game NES released that year was Ninja Gaiden 2. On Genesis the darkest and spookiest game they had that year was Ghostbusters. The cartoony one where they're little with big heads. I mean this was so far beyond everything in terms of violence and gore and sheer badassery that it wasn't dethroned until Doom in 93. There's a reason everyone who didn't have a Turbografx wanted one just to play Splatterhouse up until Splatterhouse 2 came out for Genesis. Also, way more important than all that, when you said the monster in the background looks cute it reminded me so much of Japanese pop star Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. She mixes horror with cuteness and was once quoted as saying "I try to show cuteness in a traumatic way." I think you have some of that same spirit and see the traumatic monsters as cute as a result. If you've never heard of her check out a music video of hers called "Crazy Party Night - Pumpkins Strike Back" I think it'd be right up your alley.

Great commentary on this and nice work. Splatterhouse used to be in my Top 3 rotation on an Express I had as a kid for playing on the road. Like you said it's always fun and so easy to quickly pick up and play through, much like Ninja Spirit on the TG16. Always loved how creepy some of the music and effects were... and still are!

LOVE this game! The original is definitely my favorite in the series. They're all pretty good though. Do you think you'll try to put any time in to Splatterhouse 2 on the 16-bit Genesis system from Sega? It's not as good, ESPECIALLY the music... but I always appreciated how it still played mostly like Splatterhouse 1 even though it wasn't developed by Namco (Namcot?) themselves.

Yeah it's my favorite too! And yeah, Splatterhouse 2 is the one I have the most trouble with so I never got very far in it. But I'd like to try and beat it soonish after a short Splatterhouse break.

I've played the arcade version of it on MAME a handful of times and it is bruuuuutal. At least $8 worth of credits on the game to beat it. The TG16 version is on the mini I think and I might need to give that more of a play soon.

I remember back when the TurboGraphx-16 was released. I was the only person of my friends who had one. Everyone laughed at me for buying it, but in my opinion it was a decent system. Bonk's Adventure and Bonk's Revenge are two amazing games. Splatterhouse is another top title. I'm really hoping I can find a older WORKING TurboGraphx-16 system that isn't insanely priced. Great video!

Shame I never had any consoles that the Splatterhouse games were released on. So I've never played them. But I absolutely love the 80s body horror theme. And even though it was an homage to that genre I feel like it would have been awesome made into a film too.

Nice strategies, I recommend using mid-turbo instead of max-turbo for attacking cause sometimes the game won't throw a strike at the highest level.

This was my first game I paid big bucks for when I was in college....$60. Beat it by the end of the week. I was only disappointed how easy it was. Last level was easier than the one before it. Still was one I played all the time back then. Then I got Splatterhouse 2 for the Genesis. Loved that more as it was tougher and you got to save Jennifer. Never played Splatterhouse 3. Having kids put a dent in my gaming funds.

Fun fact, you only enter the mansion at the very end of stage 3. Stage 1 and 2 are in the dungeon of a guest house that for some reason only shows up in the intro to the arcade version. It is still supposed to be a huge mansion though.

Hold select on the title screen until the word “Hard” appears. In hard mode all enemies take double damage. Good luck beating the chainsaw monster, even if you hit him with every blast from both shotguns

Well, of course its a big house.. Its supposed to be a large western mansion. That said.. This reminds me of being a kid, and getting a chance to play this at an arcade that had a few games that where technically illegal in Japan. No idea how the place got away with it at the time. ( Oh and no, Splatterhouse was not one of them.. That game was fine in Japan... Oh and before you ask.. The game was already on console when I first seen and played the arcade version.. I am, oddly older than the game by 3 years... God I really am old now.. )
