Former diver here. I cant say how correct this is, because it has been over a decade since i last certified, but AFAIK if the air pocket you are in is surface pressure (like in the crashed plane) you could swim out of the water and up to the surface as long as you properly execute an emergency ascent. The bends occur when you dive because you are breathing compressed air for an extended period of time.
@retsaMinnavoiG7 ай бұрын
I haven't watched the video but I assume water was entering the aircraft but there was an air pocket. If there was no rigid barrier between the water and the air then the air is being compressed by the water pressure. Unlike a submarine where the hull prevents the air being compressed.
@toast63757 ай бұрын
@@retsaMinnavoiGas he said, air compression sickness requires a while off compressed air.
@retsaMinnavoiG3 ай бұрын
@@toast6375 the air pocket inside the plane would indeed be compressed air. The OP said the air pocket in the sunken plane would be surface pressure. It would actually be compressed by the water pressure pushing against it. It would only remain at surface pressure after sinking if there was a rigid separation between the air and the water but because the plane has a big hole, that's not the case here. It's the same reason a balloon gets smaller the deeper you go in water even though no air has escaped... the water pressure is compressing the air. Functionally it is exactly the same as air compressed inside an air cylinder. Perhaps you're saying that if they left straight away they wouldn't have time to develop issues from breathing this compressed air but that's not really what the OP said. To make it clearer, the air in a scuba tank is compressed to extremely high PSI but the regulator controls the amount that is released so it is roughly the same pressure as the surrounding water. If you have an air pocket at 60ft under water without a rigid barrier it is being compressed to roughly 40PSI, if you're scuba diving with a tank at 60ft you're breathing air that is roughly compressed to 40PSI. If the regulator on a scuba tank provided noticeably lower pressure than the surrounding water then nothing would come out, if the regulator supplied noticeably higher pressure than the surrounding water then you would suddenly pop when trying to take a breath.

Birdstrikes as well general issues that lead to needing to fly OEI (One Engine Inoperative) are the single most trained thing in simulators for ATP pilots (the type of pilots who fly you for an airline). Airliners can *EASILY* fly on one engine, and while we may need to descend to an altitude where there is enough power to manage it, it will be okay. So common in fact that most of the modern engines are designed in such a way that if a bird is sucked into the engine, it damages only the fan blades (the biggest ones in front) but then flow around the engine, not through the engine core. So unless you hit a huge flock which damages almost all the fan blades, you should be in fact fine

@@chrismeyers5963 Actually no, it is sustained time at those altitudes which will cause edema as the body is attempting to acclimate. Short-times at that altitude (i.e. the time it takes the pilots to descend to below 14000ft) will simply lead to hypoxia and unconsciousness but most would immediately regain consciousness as soon as they descended (assuming they didn't put on their mask) Military and commercial pilots can take training which exposes them to those altitudes without oxygen to allow them to experience their personal hypoxia symptoms. Some people get sleepy, some start laughing, but knowing their symptoms can help them possibly recognize a hypoxia event in case the alarms didn't work. Then you need to have been in the right seating so you didn't drown when it crashed, or been thrown from the plane WHILE it was crashing. Then you have to survive slowly running out of oxygen while being unable to leave due to being surrounded by sharks, PLUS surviving the stupidity of the passengers. Then you have to basically swim through an unknown number of man-eating sharks using an air tank that's not designed for the situation, while also getting a fatal case of the bends. And then on top of all of that, you have to be found and rescued in the middle of the night, surrounded by open ocean, all before the sharks follow you and eat you anyway, or you die of the bends. And that's not mentioning your rescuer's ability to save you from said bends on the way back to base. This whole movie is UNBEATEN in my opinion.

But what would be more concerning would be the aerodynamics of the jet fins, at that altitude they were flying maybe 600 miles, not even steel can withstand a 3kg solid object at that speed (not to mention that Boeing is known to use magnesium fins in their jet engines). It would create a non-centered momentum and rip away the planes wing if kept powered on

I'm an airline pilot and former cargo captain and once you get a certain threshold of flying experience in a plane, flying it becomes the easy part - being able to step back and get the big picture view and be more of the "overseer" of the emergency is what is hard, and that task usually gets deferred to the more experienced pilot. That's how it was at my former cargo job and that's how it is in my current airline, but maybe it's different outside of the U.S. Oh and you wouldn't land OEI on autopilot. Anyways, love your videos!

Funny enough, that part about playing Metallica actually would bring a different breed of shark. Great whites are actually known to come to boats playing metal or heavy metal music.

Only a select few airlines that I know of are still around with rigorous training and employ based on stress management and qualifications similar to military training. I'm not afraid of flying, but I'm afraid of putting my life in the hands of people who are hired on by airlines that are looking for an ESG/DIE score. So I've stuck to the ground and the roads ever since 2016 or so.

I dont think theyd need to worry about Bends when surfacing since the plane was already depressurized before entering the water. Free divers can go really deep and back quickly without problems because its the mixed air in diving tanks that alter the blood chemistry, but regular air is ok.

So the teeth on the sharks,the way they were positioned suggest it was a tiger shark. Their teeth curve opposite of eachother from the middle and the teeth on these shark seem to the same. Of course,this is very bad news since tiger sharks and Bull sharks are infamous for eating whatever is there,even humans.
@lunararmy16249 ай бұрын
decrompession isnt really necessarry for free diving to my knowledge, the inside of the plane should have the same atmosperic pressure as the surface so they most likely wouldnt need to decrompess on the way up though i doubt anyone is making that swim without drowning
@retsaMinnavoiG10 күн бұрын
The air trapped inside would become pressurised by the water pressure.

In order to slow oxygen deprivation is to actually splash around the water which helps gas exchange.. just like fish in a fish tank creating surface movement of the water promotes the gas exchange releasing the oxygen in the water and absorbing and removing CO2 levels. But only a small amount of the CO2 will be exchanged!! But releasing the oxygen from the water is the most important for the immediate future..

Of what I know of sharks they wouldn't be like in this movie. Sharks don't eat humans except in certain circumstances. I heard that animal find humans quite disgusting and I would agree when thinking of all the chemicals we put into our bodies daily. The only reason I could see the sharks being there were if there were passengers bleeding which could attract the sharks, but even then, they would probably not been that aggressive against the living. The reasons sharks might bite humans could be because they are curious and don't have any other way of touching or we splash around too much which the shark see as a provocation. There are around 4 deaths a year from shark attacks which is nothing compared to all other ways humans die by like car crashes, or just by other humans. Anyways, sharks are misunderstood and even if they are scary, are relatively harmless against humans, mostly because we aren't their food source.

Just gotta point out that I'm almost certain the regulators those divers were using before getting turned into shark-bait would have no oxygen left, unless they very politely turned off the air-supply while getting eaten... they're supposed to constantly pump air. Also, what even happened to diver #2, it looks like he just decided to sit down and die for... literally no reason.
@smileyking77499 ай бұрын
I could be wrong, but i dont think you get decompression sickness if you haven't used a tank. I think free divers and bell divers from back in the day could go down for long periods of time, pretty deep, and didn't have to worry about that.

Engineer here... the air pocket is at surface pressure (1bar, or 14.7psi). This means you could absolutely ascend without any issues. The problem with scuba divers is that they breathe pressurized gas mixtures. This situation is more like a bell diver, who breathes surface pressure oxygen while at depth, and thus does not have to worry about gas expansion in their blood when surfacing.

@RyanBushee9 ай бұрын
They wouldn’t have died from decompression sickness. The air pressure in the plane would be of the same atmospheric pressure as above sea level due to that pressure being trapped in the plane as it sinks. Just like how sailors in a submarine don’t have to worry about decompression sickness and same with free divers who dive to extreme depths on a single breath of air.
