Yup, I quit my engineering job and pivoted into data science. I spent about 2 to 3 weeks learning Python, and now I'm 1 month into learning maths for data science - Linear Algebra, Calculus and Statistics and I foresee myself learning for another month or two. Math is the most fun part in data science, imo.

Thanks for your insights. I'm an ex IT professional turned restaurant manager and currently looking for a way to get back to Tech. I'm still comparing bootcamps here in Canada and I believe the most 3 that stand out are General Assembly, university of Toronto continuing studies bootcamp (run by edx but also receiving a certificate by UofT), third is lighthouse which has the best reputation but it's not as recognized as UofT. I'm currently in school and was deciding specifically between Cybersecurity and Data Science. A lot of the problem I'm seeing is when I'm getting salary quotes people are talking about Data Analyst but quoting Data Scientist pay. A degree in Computer Science is a career change for me, so I'm not sure I have time to go straight into a master's program. Is there a way to go straight in to Data Science with just a BS in Computer Science? I'm also VERY interested in WFH, my mom worked from home from 97-17 for IBM as a Data Analyst. Is there a better path to get than either Cybersecurity or Data Science? I'm only in semester 3 of my post-bacc so learning now would be great.

The only time when I found math/statistics to be helpful is analyzing A/B test results. Im a recent cs graduate with no work experience at all. My favorite classes were by far my senior classes on machine learning, databases, and data science. So i wanted to get a job in data science. Maybe it's not appropriate to judge whether the magnitude of laid off numbers toward data scientists is big or not. The absolute numbers vary greatly between different roles (such as SWE, DS, HR, ...), making it difficult to assess based solely on the laid-off groups.

That’s fair. There are far more SWEs than data science folks. The study is also dependent on self-reporting so could be biased due to that (like most self-reported studies) but that’s the numbers we have. If you have additional insights, would love to hear.

no need to limit yourself to just one resource. chatgpt is very useful; plenty of other resources to look at as well, like websites and books. I like the book "mathematics for machine learning" personally. Has all the math concepts you need for ml. "Deep Learning" by bengio also has alot of math explanations for ml math.

With all the data science/analytics hype and other jargons , I'm having 2nd thoughts whether to really step into this . I work as a 3D artist but I have a Bachelor's in Computer science. I'm learning Python (but can't leave my arty side) So I'm confused actually FK me.

10 years ago, I got a job offer from Amazon. pretty much everyone around me said to not take that offer. My best friend at that time used very strong words to discourage me to not work at Amazon, but I wanted to try it for myself and then decide so I went with my gut feeling and accepted the offer. Fast forward, it turned out to be one of the best career decisions. Follow your gut. If you want to try data science then you should try it and then decide if it’s right or wrong for you.

@@SundasKhalid TRUEeee actually, im leaving my current job in feb and starting towards Data science. But im more interested in doing data analytics towards Automobile/Space/Geography etc..(i dont even know the applications) One thing for sure I dont wanna do Data analytics for Banking and shite! Should I be this picky at the start? Or stop beig choosy and just step into it.

But no of jobs for software engineers is more then data scientist and why would company will hire data scientist as there are tons of pre trained model available on platforms like huggingface

Because in order to implement those models .... unfortunately they will need a data scientist for that.....
