Thank you for this guide. I recently finished a PhD in oceanography and am looking to pivot away from the field, and data science seems like an incredible career, I'll be spending my 2025 breaking into it.

I'm glad it was helpful! There are Reddit communities like /datascience and /learnmachinelearning, and Discord servers like Learn AI Together, The Data Share, and Chronic Coders. I haven't been involved with these personally in a while, but I'm sure that at least some are still active and a good place to interact with others. One day I'd love to start something myself, but it's early days for me, so we'll see how it goes! Thanks for watching.

It's relevant to pass some coding interviews but not relevant for the actual job of a data scientist.

@@Gratitude.Driven Thanks Marina! Quick question ? In the learning resources for python , you mentioned the Python for Data Analysis e-book by Wes McKinney as one of the option. While going through the book the author mentioned this note below . " There are introductory Python concepts that this chapter does not cover, like classes and object-oriented programming, which you may find useful in your foray into data analysis in Python. To deepen your Python language knowledge, I recommend that you supplement this chapter with the official Python tutorial and potentially one of the many excellent books on general-purpose Python programming. Some recommendations to get you started include: Python Cookbook, Third Edition, by David Beazley and Brian K. Jones (O'Reilly) Fluent Python by Luciano Ramalho (O'Reilly) Effective Python, Second Edition, by Brett Slatkin (Addison-Wesley)" Do i need to also go through the official Python tutorial and any one of the books mentioned as well along with this book while learning python. If yes , then that would be a lot to study just for python and take a lot of time else i can simply overlook the note for now and go ahead learning from the book. Let me know your thoughts.
@Gratitude.Driven
@Gratitude.Driven 8 күн бұрын
@anishnair45 Object-oriented programming is good to know, but I think it should come after all the other fundamental skills you need for the job. Once you're working on projects you'll get comfortable with Python and can just watch a couple of KZbin videos to pick up enough OOP for most roles.

Rejection is a big part of the beginner experience, 100%. The question is whether you're willing to push through that to achieve the bigger goal. Best of luck!

Stop publishing such videos for god sake. I have been data scientist for years and I can confirm you getting a new job in data science is going to be impossible if you don't learn AI and master LLM Finetuning and RAG (Langchain)

Thanks for your input! We've hired several Data Scientists (a few entry level) in the last few months, and none of them will be working with LLMs. I think it's totally awesome if someone has the time to learn these skills -- absolutely valuable -- but, I'm assuming someone is starting from not being able to code or understand basic stats. There's no reason that they shouldn't learn these things at some point, but I don't believe that lacking deep LLM skills should stop someone from putting themselves out there and trying for the many positions that don't require this. We all have to start somewhere, and I know from my personal experience on hiring panels for Amazon that LLM skills are not always required, especially for entry-level or more analytics-focused DS positions. Best wishes!
