Just to reiterate what Dr. Lee said--becoming a dermatologist is extremely difficult. You have to get into medical school--a huge hurdle in itself--and excel there (ideally top 4%; def top 16%). Research publications are also a must. You don't have to be a genius per se, though. Medical school isn't necessarily rigorous because you have to master obscure and abstract material; it's challenging because you have to assimilate a seemingly inconceivable amount of information. Those that are brilliant don't necessarily excel in medical school--those with a great work ethic and stamina definitely do. It's all in the discipline.

You can always do an 18 month program and become an aesthetician. It will cost 20-30k to go to a good school though. Depending on what state u live in you can do a certain amount of pimple and blackhead popping. I’ve noticed on Dr Lee’s videos they have one in her office who does facial and there are only certain tools they can use but each state has it own rules. I have a friend who got hers after 30. She already had a degree and career but wanted to try something new. She does it PT at a salon and works on sets for photo shoots in NYC and makes good money as a side hustle. She was lucky and only paid 18k for school as they were just opening that year and were waiting for a accreditation so gave a deal for tuition.

Hey, I am actually a med student, and hope you actually read this. I love watching your educational videos as I love the field of dermatology and learn so much watching you work. It is really fun to relax and watch your videos in between study sessions. I really wish I could go into dermatology, but I have failed a course during M1/2 and am at the bottom third of my class. Derm is such a great specialty, and I am often disappointed that I am shut out of such a great specialty at such a early point in my medical career. Without going into much detail on this public comment section, I truly believe I could make a big difference going into derm and have a meaningful career in medicine. I am thinking about doing IM and then rematching into derm. But, I hear that is a risky proposition because I could then be stuck doing IM or being a hospitalist, which isn't exactly what I want to do. I admire what you do, and I guess I will always have to live vicariously through you and other dermatologists.

Questions: 1. She talks about college or university, by that she means the 4 years after high school, correct? 2. Do you have to get any specific degree or take any specific classes in high school or college to get into medical school? 3. How does medical school work? 4. Do you study general things or specific things during medical school? (Like do you focus on specific body parts or topics) 5. Do you get paid when you become a resident for a dermatology program? 6. Do you usually have to work while go to school to afford your education? 7. Do you have the time and money to still enjoy life? I have more but these are basic ones 😅
@icee_lemon58544 жыл бұрын
I don’t know everything about schooling for medicine, but I can answer a few questions: 1.) When she was talking about university/college, she was talking about the education she got after high school 2.) You don’t need a specific major to get into medical school. It’s all about your MCAT score, and people from many different majors take the MCAT. If you know you want to go into medical school right away after university, you would want to opt for a pre-med program at your university to study for the MCAT. Pre-med programs specialize in classes that will best ready you for the exam, but you can also do well on the MCAT through a biology or chemistry major. These tests scores from your MCAT will determine your fate at med school. 3/4.) From my understanding, general med school teaches you the basics of medicine. Many doctors have similar procedural stuff that overlaps across fields. That that means is if you go to a medical school, most people will start by gaining the basic knowledge first. After 4 years at medical school, you choose an area you wish to specialize in and work to get your education so you can take another test to become board certified (depending on the specialization you choose after med school, you could be taking another form of test). After you pass your boards, you will be considered a certified doctor and can choose where you want to work. I’m not sure about 5, 6, and 7 since I actually haven’t gone through the process yet, but I hope the rest of this was helpful! Good luck!
@boltup55664 жыл бұрын
1. Yes 4 years after high school. 2. Any degree but must take required prerequisite classes like chemistry, bio, physics, organic chem and get As in them 3. Med school is 4 years of pain. 2 years of academics. 2 years of clinical work. 4. General. 5. Yes paid. 40 to 50 grand. Not much. 6. Not much time to work during med school. 7. Persepctive. You have spring break. Summer and winter. But summer you do research. So mot much free time.

She took over her fathers dermatology practice in CA. When he retired, she started her first day on the job. She didn't have kids until after she started working at the family's practice. It's safe to conclude she didn't have to balance family,work and education,because she didn't form a family until she completed her specialized degree. Hope this helps.

I had average grades in HS but if I can do that, anyone can apply him/herself. I decided that staying in the mental health & substance abuse career field isnt for me and would love to be the next dr. pimple popper. If what you're pursuing isnt a challenge, then it doesnt seem worth it to me.

Heh, so I wanted to become a dermatologist for a long time. Now, knowing I have to basically spend about 12 years preparing for this job. I really don’t know about this job anymore, I think I’m just gonna think of something else. 😖

Awesome video....you are a great ambassador for medicine and dermatology in particular.i hope some watching this will make it through what I reckon are at least 12 years of phenomenally hard work at a level of academic attainment that is beyond many peoples imagining! I have a degree from Cambridge in England and post graduate qualifications, so quite good but nowhere near what medics have to do.Sadly I think many of the people who comment " I want to be a dermatologist" have no idea what your training has been and actually think as a dermatologist they will get to spend their days popping blackheads if only they have your job. In reality all they want to be an aesthetician ...and they have a really distorted view of what dermatologists do.

If I could, I would like this a million times! I have been wanting to be a dermatologist ever since I was in fourth grade. I was just watching KZbin videos and I found you, and now I'm totally addicted! I have been working really hard in school to get into a good college. My life goal is to become a dermatologist. Want to know who inspired me? YOU! I wish the best of luck and thank you for being such an inspiration on me. :-)

I was wondering what degree your assistants have. I dont think I would like to be a dermatologist but a dermatology assistant sounds fun. I am currently a certified pharmacy tech and a certified respiratory therapist.

Assistants get paid worse than regular nurses. Unless you mean aesthetician or a PA.

Thank Dr Lee! Love your channel and so glad you made this video about what it takes to become a Dermatologist, so much more than popping pimples, it's a very vast field with so many avenues and requires dedication, passion and drive to accomplish. Love that you show under the micro biopsy so interesting, keep the videos coming!!

I am not sure how I ever got linked to your channel but I am so glad I did! I live in a rural area in Kansas. I am working toward my DNP and after watching you I am considering dermatology. I just love you and your bedside manner with elderly people is an inspiration. Would love to see even more interesting or unusual cases, even if they don't generate the views that pimple popping does. Thanks!

I love this video! I was inspired by your videos and either want to be a dermatologist or a geneticist. Thanks for breaking down all your years of schooling. I knew you had to go to med school after university and that you had to get residency but I didn't know how long exactly so this was helpful.

sakurabender Im kind of worried that you spend all your life in school , like life is only one time and i feel like I wont cherish it by being so busy and studying hard . Especially in 20's . Could i still have kids at age 33? I dont know ): someone give advice

@sunnyray40655 жыл бұрын
You could become a skincare specialist for a brand. Brands like KOTY have other companies sitting underneath it like Philosophy etc. You could do it from a sales or marketing position too instead of diving super deep into dermatology

Thank you for sharing!! I want to get into esthetic lasering so I'm looking into doing some courses to become a lpn or something in that realm so I can get into a decent clinic (derm) or work with a plastic surgeon. I'm a licensed aesthetician but from my research more hires for people with some kind of medical background. I don't want to have to go to school for very long is why I'm not going for like rna. But who knows maybe I will change my mind. Skin is such a fascinating world. I have learned so much form you and am grateful to you for everything you do. You help so many in your office and thru your youtube channel. Thank you!!

in britain there is a bbc programme the diagnosis detectives of 12 experts nephrology, haematology, rheumatology, etc and what has been outstanding is the foremost role the dermatologist dr sharon wong is playing in helping diagnose people's longstanding and debilitating conditions which so far have not been solved. like detectives.. she really has a comprehensive knowlege that is interconnecting with the other disiplines. i think dermatology has really gone up in the esteem of her peers.
