Note on confidence from a former teacher: it's totally a thing. In education, there's this concept known as the 'growth mindset' which was first coined by Dr. Carol Dweck (the opposite being 'fixed mindset'). She studied the behavior of thousands of children and found that those who were confident in their ability to achieve (growth mindset), did; and those that didn't (fixed mindset), didn't. Essentially, your mindset in whatever you do is a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you go into math thinking that you won't do well because you're bad at math and there isn't anything you can do, you won't do well in your math class. But if you change your mentality to something like, 'This is hard, but I know I'll figure it out', at some point you will. Belief in yourself is KEY in every single endeavor you have in your life, even those outside of school. So if believing in yourself seems like a bit of a stretch now, try changing your mindset first and see how it goes. Over time as you do more, your confidence will grow too!

Yes, and this concept particularly works together with neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is when the brain adapts when regularly challenged. Several studies have found that particularly mentally stimulating environments can actually stimulate the growth of the brain, not only causing that person to improve in that specific task but also in other similar tasks. Take that concept and apply it to a growth mindset and you have someone who can overcome what seems like a talent barrier and can even reach a point where they might even acquire that talent for learning that particular subject.

I have been practicing medicine for almost 20 years and this video brought back so many fun memories! I also can relate to the stories. I remember one of my attendings saying that I joked too much with patients. But, that is just how I am. For weeks after, I wasn't myself until one of my patients told me to smile more and that I was too serious.....that put me back in my place ;)

This video came at the PERFECT time! I'm about to start my first year of medical school in a week, and you've both been such inspirations to me as someone who had always felt that dermatology was out of my reach. A lot of what you said really resonated with me, as I also struggled a lot in high school and spent much of my first year in college learning to learn, which definitely made me a stronger student in the long run. It was really eye-opening to hear about all the hard work that you both put into your careers, and I'd love to hear more about the research you did in med school! Thank you again for sharing all your knowledge & experiences!

*This is sooo inspirational* !!! My biggest dream is to become a Clinical Psychologist, which is far from anything medical school related since my aim was never Psychiatry. I have SO MUCH respect for all the very, very hard work you BOTH have put into your dreams and into in turn - becoming Dermatologists. I wish I could say I was the best student but I'm struggling with motivation and it's just so hard. I know I could do so much better but my heart is not really there. My field is highly competitve and geting into grad school for Clinical Pyschology is the hardest thing tbh in the Psychology field, apart from of course wanting to become an MD (Psychiatrist). It's so inspirational hearing about others stories of their lives and how you 2 seemed to have turned things around academically from when you both were younger. Bless you both !

I took a year off of college but I’m back now, and in person, and so excited to start my journey. 23 years young and ready for what lies ahead of me. Thanks for the inspiration! Thanks for sharing! And I worked for a MOHS doc for years and it's funny to hear you all talk about the fellowship piece of it, because he would talk about the "pop up MOHS docs" that weren't formally fellowship trained. Great overall advice. I think back to HS and I was an athlete. I loved classes and learning, but had test anxiety and was busy with my sport. The career councilor at our school was super negative to me, to the point where I got my mother involved. He was so down on what my opportunities were and even told my mom that statistically I didn’t have a chance in college. I ended up getting several offers from well known schools because of my athletic ability and I worked my tush off to pass the standardized test for entry. I then worked hard, met with professors, tutors and even took a class on how to be a better student. I thrived in college, I took more than four years, I struggled with some of my classes. But I enjoyed learning and knew I just needed to work harder than others. When I graduated, I mailed him a copy of my degrees. I said that he didn’t help motivate me, he made me feel like a loser and that I hope he never did it to another student again. My family and friends were so supportive of me, I’ve wondered how many others that ‘career counselor’ knocked down for no reason. Thank you for sharing your stories.

@@SynchroSk8 same, I've had jobs where it was to meet new ppl everyday. But I got through it. It's our brain that acts and wants us to be safe and comfortable. U just have to ignore it. We are way capable of things than we think. I mean the things I've done at work during stress n crisis.. Yikes. When in the moment I just go to a different brain mode of "JUST DO IT". Just recently I forced myself to go on a workshop.. I was a bit anxious. But it ended up great and I met really nice talented ppl. I even became super talkative.. Which is something I've noticed.. Acne products can be fairly drying, and I am starting to see some fine lines and wrinkles forming in my 20s. Other areas I am interested in learning about are fading and preventing scarring, cellulite, varicose veins, cherry angiomas, makeup that is skin friendly, and hair growth on bald spots (if possible - I have had one on my hairline since I was a kid for unknown reasons). I’m 24 years old and my dermatologist said that’s normal for women in their 20s to develop this. I’ve had severe eczema since I was born so I’ve always had to use steroid creams and lotions. I recently developed eczema around my eyelids that’s absolutely MISERABLE… I’ve tried many creams and drops but nothing seems to help! The only thing that slightly makes them better is steroid creams.. I hate applying the creams around my eyes because I know that’s the thinnest skin on the body and steroid creams thin the skin even more… please do a video on eczema and eyelid eczema!!

Hi doctors. What are your thoughts about natural/ plant based/ vegan products? Are they like worth the price? / Do they perform better/ worse? Do you have any recommendations for vegan/ natural products to treat acne?

Currently majoring in computer science and engineering and I feel so miserable, I don’t want my life to be like this…I’ve always been super passionate about skincare and I know dermatology is a lot more than that, but I want to help people heal and cure their skin conditions. This is such a huge change to be considering so thank you for this video

Thank you for this. I am a medical student right now. I failed my first year. COVID was rough on me: going through school on Zoom, family problem, and lots of mistakes. I am repeating it again in person. My goal is to be a dermatologist. I know it will be close to impossible. However, I hope I can make it and be as great as y’all.

You can do it. My son's friends are repeaters and they had similar circumstances. No shame in repeating. Repeating is a dirty word nobody talks about but it's really about secind chances. My son said there are repeatets for every year and you cannot predict who will be a repeater.

A little correction though for the MCAT it is not a 2 day test it's still a 1 day test (7 hours 30 mins) it's just that they can now offer the test 2 times a day depending on what time you scheduled it. So the morning start time is 7 am and ends around 3:00 pm then the next group of people start their mcat at 3:30 pm and ends near 10 pm or so

I’m 25 and been with my husband for 7 years and married for 4. I never graduated. I am working on my GED right now, just past one test, 3 more to go. Have you seen women start family’s while going to school. Right when I’m done with my GED I want to do this. Since before this whole world of dermatology blew up via media I have had a strong passion and desire. I feel I can do both family and school but I worry it will delay the 12-13 years. What do you guys think?

Hey! I'm really looking for advice. There is little information on skin care catering to men online. so I subscribed to your channel. I've been trying to apply sunscreen daily but one problem I have is around the beard area. since you are the like the only ones with any facial hair talking about skin care, I'm hoping you have any information on applying sunscreen to the beard area. should I or should I not? Are there better brands for this? My hair is all less than a 1/4 inch. The sunscreen basically just goops up in my hair and turns my beard white. I have black hair so this is the major problem stopping me from reapplying before leaving from work at the end of the day. I don't even know if I'm getting enough down to the skin. If it's even working.
