If you’re a nurse, chances are you’re hard-working, compassionate, enjoy healthcare, and want to help others. These qualities are also highly sought-after among doctors.
Are you curious about taking that extra step and securing the salary increase that comes with becoming an MD?
It’s critical that you understand what you’re getting into. You can’t simply take a quick course and make the switch from RN to MD.
You will need to apply and get accepted to medical school, which includes taking the MCAT, writing a personal statement, obtaining letters of recommendation, gaining relevant work and experiences, completing secondary essays, and interviewing. Earning acceptance to medical school is no easy task, and medical school itself is incredibly challenging.
Med school takes 4 years, and residency is 3-7 years, depending on your specialty.
Additionally, medical school is a significant financial investment of hundreds of thousands of dollars. As an RN, you’ll go from earning a stable income to paying for a medical education that lasts 7-11 years.
Although it is a challenging road ahead, there are many benefits to becoming a doctor, including advanced career opportunities, greater intellectual challenge, autonomy, and a notable salary increase. Doctors, on average make $350K a year or $380K if you’re a specialist.
