Good question. How much you decide to spend for a test shoot is completely up to you! It depends on where you decide to shop and many looks you want to include in the test shoot. You don’t have spend a ton of money if you don’t want to, that’s where your creativity as a Stylist comes in. For example: you can thrift clothing and repurpose them for a shoot.

Hi there! Welcome to the channel and thank you for your questions! A Fashion Designer artistically creates clothing. They may sketch their unique design and construct/sew the garment. A Fashion Stylist is not usually required to draw or design clothing. They assemble clothing items together to create unique looks/outfits for either a commercial, Ad. campaign, magazine spread/feature, etc. So, YES, you can be a Stylist if you can't draw!

Do stylists pay for the clothes they use?

Hey there! Thanks for your question! For test shoots (shoots that the Stylist does voluntarily with other professionals for portfolio work) the Stylist usually pays for the clothes on a credit card and returns them. For professional photoshoots where a company hires a Stylist, the company gives the Stylist a credit card to shop with.

Hi Gabrielle, thanks for your question! Like most Stylists, I shop for the clothing. In fact the general purpose of a Fashion Stylist is to promote particular brands whether you’re styling a Celebrity or a magazine feature/fashion spread. You can make your own clothes or repurpose clothing that you already own for your shoots, but it isn’t mandatory. On the other hand Costume Designer (professionals who style for movies and television) often design and/or create the clothing.
