Im a nursing student graduating in December. I’ve always been interested in ER and one of my pts I took care of as an aide told me she was a flight nurse. When she said she had to get her foot print taken because the foot is usually the last part of the body to burn in case of a crash and trying to identify person, I was like wow that sounds like an adventure. That would be SO cool to one day be a flight nurse.

I wanted to know if you absolutely need trauma or ER experience to apply for a flight job. Also, educational videos would be cool!
@FelinoLino Жыл бұрын
@@ashkat79 I will definitely work on some videos! And technically you don't need ER experience, but it's preferred I applied with little floating experience in the ED

@@FelinoLino thank you for the response. I had a few questions I wanted to run by you. I accepted a full time position starting July doing open heart recovery. It’s a pretty specialized unit so I won’t get typical ICU patients. My first question is, would you recommend working PRN at a level 1 ER or somthing to strengthen the resume a bit?
@FelinoLino8 ай бұрын
@@EkkoOnApex That actually sounds a great idea! Just 2 ED shifts a month will count as the PRN usually. The CVICU will give you great experience in critical care medicine which is also needed

shot in the dark here since this video was posted so long ago. I served 6 years in the military doing combat medicine with 2 deployments and got a lot of trauma/emergency experience on the level of civilian paramedic/pre-hospital care. A decent amount of that was experience in medivac/helicopters and fell in love with them. Got out, grabbed my BSN where I did a year of SICU clinicals, got hired at fairly large hospital system and I'm now about to hit the year mark on a MICU. My question is, I work night shift which seems to me that you have to be more independent/have more initiative and I feel like we get way more sick admits vented with triple pressors etc. But recently day shift option opened up. When I was rotating, It felt like I learned a lot more as far as knowledge with all the changes in care plan/talking with doctors during days. Do you think the experience with plan of care/knowledge/doctors and other disciplines during day shift would benefit me more moving towards flight nursing, or would having to work much more independently and make more calls on my own (learning hospital so nurses often are ones advising residents) be more valuable?
@FelinoLino Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! And dang that's a lot of experience! Also, thank you for your service. Actually, it's good to have that experience of that autonomy of a night shifter and knowing what to expect as the next order and plan of care. However, I will say seeing the procedures also being started and done during the day does help, just so you can know what happens when you are picking up patients. I started on nights for 2 years and did days for 2 years and then went into flight. The confidence and autonomy of the night shift definitely helps.
@marettmrc Жыл бұрын
@@FelinoLino Sick. Thanks for your reply, it was helpful. I think I'll stick on nights for the next year or two then and try and move over to days when I feel like any skills left to learn on nights are exhausted! I guess if you want to answer another question, were there any specific units you traveled to that were especially helpful so far in flight nursing? I went MICU because I already felt pretty comfortable with trauma/GSWs/burns/etc, at least from an emergency standpoint, and wanted to learn the stuff I know the least about, but I'm trying to think forward as to what units I might jump over to once I've been here for a while (or they start trying to force me to be charge nurse lmao)

how long it takes to become a flight nurse if you follow and do everything correctly. Because you mention a bunch of certifications that I imagine there are not taught in a BSN or ADN?

Hi! Yes, the certifications are not taught within school of BSN or ADN. So getting those certifications are earned while you are working as an RN. Some people get those within 2 years on average on the job

Does it matter if someone has a bachelor's or master's degree in nursing? I have a bachelors in Business but, I'm thinking of taking Masters's direct entry (MDE) or MSN at a top-notch school.

Some companies may be a little picky on having at least a Bachelor's in Nursing for flight, but I have worked with plenty of flight nurses that have their ADN (Associates degree in Nursing.)
