So right. Watch , ask and learn. Team fishing also really helps, start as a bank runner then slowly you will start making the team . Good luck 👍

Completely agree, Gordon. I've just started match angling again with my local club (BDAC) after a 25 year 'layoff'. Everyone is friendly and they help me out with tips and advice. I'm propping up the results and loving every minute (mostly!)

At 52 I’m late to the party. Always pleasure fished until someone introduced me to match fishing 2 years ago. This is my 2nd in a club and boy is it a steep learning curve but love every match. Watch loads of videos on you tube and try putting them into practice. In my experience you need to practice the basics, learn the water craft by fishing as much as possible and being brave by having a debrief with good anglers at your club so they know what you did right and wrong in the match. Feeding and finding the right depth are my 2 achilles heels. I love fishing shallow with caster / maggots but in colder months I tend to over feed or switch baits rather than perfect the feeding.

I have been fishing for 62 years (Since I was 9) and am still learning. I think your comments are amazingly relevant and to the point. I am currently fishing Opens which are run by Steve Gardner and can confirm even at my late years have learned so much more. I run a club with 15 members and enjoy the fishing of Open when I am not fishing for my Club. Well said Gordon.

Totally agree that your comments will make you a better match anger but a great match angler has to sacrifice everything else to get to the top - there seems a prestige 5% these days that consistently win at the highest level compared to the dizzy days of the 80s and 90s - in all cases they pretty much fish full time with the highest levels of sponsorship. Interesting debate mate
