I did a labor and delivery externship the summer before senior year. They definitely are rare. They offered a postpartum and L&D residency, and they only chose one person each for those units. And I was able to land a L&D job much easier/quicker than my peers. My best friend has no PCT/externship experience and she’s yet to land a job anywhere, but she really wants to work with women and/or children. We graduate in 3 weeks. GREAT video!

Thank you for sharing! That is amazing you got into an L&D externship! I saw a similar situation in my class where the people who were PCTs/had externships got jobs much faster and those who had no work experience found jobs way later than everyone else and it was difficult for them. I hope your friend finds her dream position. And early congratulations for graduating! 💕

So you talked about it’s kind of hard to get into L&D. Is it required to have a years experience at every hospital before going into L&D? Where do we get this years experience from before becoming an L&D ? Is that why you did antepartum to get your one years experience? Because I’m not sure how that works
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
Nope! You can enter L&D as a new grad with no experience but you'll need to be hired into a residency position, which is how they are hiring new grads nowadays. I did an antepartum residency because they didn't have L&D available at the hospital I applied to. Then I crosstrained on the L&D unit at my hospital while still working antepartum, so now I float there every so often. But if you don't get into an L&D position right out of new grad, then yes you'll have to do a years experience before applying to floor positions.

For a while I’ve been thinking how amazing and rewarding it would be to have the opportunity to work with babies on a daily basis. I’ve decided on signing up for community college to complete the nursing program. I’m starting in January and couldn’t be more excited! I’m going to take my prerequisites online considering I have a baby boy and feel that it would be the most convenient. What are some of the things that you did to stay motivated? Also, after you graduate are you able to go into whatever department you’d like or do they put you wherever they need a spot filled?
@Romi_joy

Love this!! Congratulations with your decision! ❤️ I think the thing that motivated me most was thinking of myself as a nurse and helping delivery babies which was my passion. I applied for labor and delivery positions which is what I really wanted, but I really enjoyed other women's positions as well so the only thing available when I graduated was an OB/GYN position that I took, then cross trained to L&D later on. So to answer your question, you can go into whatever department you'd like as long as the position is open!!

Hey so I saw your TikTok as a labor and delivery nurse and I’m kinda confused because I’m a senior and I wanted to major in nursing to become a neonatal nurse and that I know of you were doing the same thing I thought they do so i don’t know if I’m wrong if their different or the same thing or it’s different in Texas ? And I don’t wanna go to college and do something wrong you know ? And btw I’m from Houston so idk

Hey! So in college you're going to major in Nursing (check out my latest video of how to be a nurse after college)! When you're getting close to graduation, that's when you'll apply for specific jobs (labor and delivery, neonatal, etc). So I'm trained on multiple units so I labor moms, as well as take care of babies (neonatal or nursery nurse). You can apply for any of these options close to graduation when you're a college senior. All nurses graduate in Nursing before they apply for a specific unit. Did that help a little?

I live in Texas and I’m currently in my first semester at community college. What do you recommend I should do after finishing my associates?
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
If you mean your associates in nursing (ADN), then you take your NCLEX and become and RN after you pass! Then you can get your bachelor's degree online in less than a year.

If I go to a 4 year university, what should i major and minor in to be a labor and delivery nurse? Btw good video💞
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
You just have to major in Nursing! No minor needed. When you get close to graduation (last semester senior year), you can apply to labor and delivery positions!!

Hi Romi, thanks for sharing these tips! I am in my second year of the RN BSN program in California. I’m curious about antipartum residencies, I’ve never heard of that department, do you know if there are residencies for that in CA? I’ve heard it’s VERY difficult to get hired straight into L&D, is it best to take any position in the women/ob area and try to transfer after some time?
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
There are certainly antepartum residencies in all states, but these are most likely going to be in the bigger hospitals (they are also called OB/GYN units, so that might help in your search!). Smaller hospitals normally have their antepartum/L&D units combined. Apply broadly to all L&D positions as early as 1st semester of your senior year, if you are having difficulty landing interviews, apply broadly in all women/ob areas (postpartum, triage, ante) and if you get that position, usually after completing training (~4-6 months) you can very easily transfer to L&D!

Do labor & delivery nurses have to do ekg strips ?
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
Yes they do!! It's important that we keep our ekg certification up to date because we have to put patients on heart monitors in PACU after their Csection. But they get much easier over time!😁

Thank you so much for this😊 Is OBGYN nurse same as labor and delivery nurse?
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there!!😁 so they're pretty different, my original unit (OB-GYN) focuses on a wide spectrum of womens health (antepartum, postpartum, and women's oncology/gynecology problems) so I get ALOT of different patients on that unit. I cross trained to Labor and Delivery which is strictly antepartum patients and delivering babies.

What do you recommend better like Bachelors, Master ..etc ???
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
Hospitals today definitely prefer a bachelor's over an associates for nursing. Master's degrees are more of a preference for nurses but you can make more money with them and for a nurse you have the option to practice independently (FNP, WHNP, nurse midwife, MHNP). This is for a nursing degree only but I can't say the same for other degrees. I hope that answers your question!

I am a senior about to finish high school and going to a community college what do you suggest I take first if I want to become a labor & delivery nurse? Or what degree should I accomplish first?
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
You have to get a degree in nursing if you want to be a labor and delivery nurse. I'm posting a video tomorrow on options after high school with all the prerequisites but to help you now, research the prerequisites to the nursing program you want to eventually apply to and enroll in those prerequisites as soon as possible!
