How To Become a Licensed Massage Therapist/ Schooling, Licensure and Continuing Education

Do you need to be certified in chair massage if you have a license? Or is it more a way to advertise.

There is no special certificate for chair massage it falls under your regular massage therapy license! It is a great tool for advertising (it’s basically how I built my entire business!) but some people do use it as a significant form of income- they will do paid events or sign contracts with factories, schools and other businesses to provide regular chair massages to their employees- there have been a lot of studies done showing that it can really help to boost morale amongst employees which equals higher productivity. It also reduces injury and workman’s comp cases.

Do you have to pay for your continuing education classes??

If you are insured through a company like the AMTA or the AMBP they will sometimes offer free CEU classes, but most often, yes you do pay for continuing education. In South Carolina I am required to take 12 credit hours every 2 years, and I can usually find classes as cheap as $20 for online things and then in person stuff will be much more expensive and can range from a couple hundred to a thousand dollars or more. It all depends on what you are learning and how in depth the training is.

I’m not sure what you mean- but I do know that basic biology is a requirement for Massage license in my state. I took this class in college, not high school.

This would depend on your state and the particular program you choose! I personally attended a 3 semester program and it can be completed in one year.
