Great video. I’m 59. I started learning magic about seven months ago. Fortunately, I have been doing some of what you recommended. I joined IBM and have been to my local “Ring.” I am performing at the Ring in two weeks. I pieced together all 8 volumes of Tarbell, some new, some used. I just bought Mark Wilson’s book, it arrived today at my mail store but I have to pick it up. I subscribed to Dan Harlan’s Tarbell Course. It actually starts tomorrow. I get one video a week for about 2 years. So it was nice to see that you recommend some of the things I am already doing. I hope to perform at some elder care facilities for free once I gain more experience. Right now though, I’m running a small business and work more than full time, so I practice and study when I can. Thanks Mr. Dellman, I subscribed.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Magic. I hope you find your journey here to be rich and rewarding. Between Mark Wilson's course and Dan Harlan's very visual and very well-thought-out presentation of Tarbell, you are off to a great start. Please let me know if I can help. I would be glad to be of service. Enjoy!

Hey this is a great little intro. I'm coming back to magic after initially attempting right before my first kid was born (obviously didn't have as much time as I hoped). As a huge nerd, I love the books. I learned to juggle from books as a kid, and as a result, developed a VERY unique style, which is my way of saying I do it wrong, but I ended up getting a lot of attention from people much more skilled than me when I went to the International Juggling Association festival many years ago. When you have a unique style, people know that they're seeing something different.

Awesome stuff, I remember back in the early 90s being at school and doing tricks I found in books in my grandparents basement. So much fun and my teacher gave me a kit her son use to use and introduced me to Artie Kidwell. Seeing him perform live blew my mind. I use to go to a local shop called brewies magic and I remember Artie performing there and me buying the trick after seeing it live. I still have my three tricks I bought from there :) wish I would have stuck with it. I still do tricks on occasion but it's more of a hobby I did a few shows, parties and what not but didn't know how to make it a career. Really miss it and wish I could get back into but nothing beats seeing it live and learning from a real pro.

Fantastic Advice! I'm so glad you did this presentation on the road to becoming and how to sustain the love of being a Magician! Bravo!! The only point I would tack on would be " Never rush through an effect" Speed is a form of weakness in the presentation, Let your audience enjoy what's being presented to them. If you have practiced to the proper level and have a entertaining presentation, the effect can be taken to a new level.
@DavidDellman
@DavidDellman 2 жыл бұрын
I think that is great advice. When we are nervous or excited we tend to rush but if we rush magic we run the risk of running over the effect, of pushing our audience too fast for their comprehension. Great advice and thanks for adding it to this discussion

Thanks, I have this Mark WIlson book and Tarbell #1 as well as the Original Tarbell Letters. I also have Secrets of Alkazar which is great non-intimidating way for learning the principles of magic. I just got Book of Wonders and I think I am going to focus on that set of books first before Tarbell and Mark Wilson. Then go back to Tarbell/Wilson when I want to get into other areas of magic... Pretty much focused on cards now. Also have Mnemonica, Repertoire by Asi Wind as well as Temporarily Out of Order by Patrick Redford. Also have Top Change by Magic Christian. Thanks for mentioning Linking Ring and MUM... I found out with membership I have access to all past issues in digital format which is handy for reference. Also considering yearly subscription to Genii for $39 which gives you access to all past issues as well. Oh BTW, i learned a lot of basic sleights and card control from Paul Wilson Royal Road to Magic. ALso I have The Magic Book by Harry Lorayne.

Do you have to do card magic to be a magician? It seems card magic is the "in" thing on most youtube channels. I'm learning coin magic and want to get into cups and ball real heavy but feel like I have to learn card magic if I want to be an all around magician. How do you learn and master all these things quickly?
@DavidDellman
@DavidDellman 6 ай бұрын
It is a good idea to have a basic understanding of card magic. Do you "have to do card magic to be a magician"? No, but you will leave a lot of great magic on the table if you choose to ignore this basic area of magic. I would say that if you "want to be an all-around magician," then you definitely need to study card magic. "How do you learn and master all these things quickly?" Nothing worth having comes quickly or easily. Be patient with yourself, study the right materials, and you will achieve great things in good time.

I disagree: that you become a clone if you imitate another magician from a video. My experience is I developed my own modifications on every trick I do. It depends on the age, situation, oprotunity of the props used many factors but the performance is never the same. I watch other magicians to get ideas on improvements to my own style not to imitated it exactly, that never happens.
