For those who are looking for mechnic stuff without school.... 10 years ago I walked into my local marine repair shop and asked the manager if I could volunteer there a few days and clean the shop and do some basic things if they would teach me about being a boat mechanic. 2 weeks later he was letting me to standard maintenance with a mechanic watching me and after a month they offered me a position being an "intern" where I just did the oil changes and cleaning motors and helping the mechnics out. Now I'm a full time mechanic and do everything under the sun! An education means a lot to people NOT in this world, experience and a WILLINGNESS TO WORK and ATTITUDE TO WORKING speaks far louder than any mechanics degree. It's a lot like Doctors, all that schooling didn't help you if you can't save anyone

When I asked my boss to do something about it he said that he would never do such a thing and that I should keep better track of my tools. I went over into my co workers bay and found my tools laying on top of his box, and When I confronted him about it I got laid off. I wanted to take them to court over losing my job and over $600 in tools but I was already in so much debt that I couldnt spend time and money on that. I moved passed that and left everything behind and went on to a toyota dealer as a flat rate tech and I couldnt be happier. @amoreholliday6 жыл бұрын
You guys there is so much ways to get experience. Save your money and do your own basic maintenance. Go to the junk yards and take the cars apart. Do research about how a car works, how parts work. Then put it as skills on your resume. Get into a shop and start out scrubbing the floor. If you don't want to do all this to be a tech/mechanic maybe you should find something youre passionate about because if you really want this you are going to work on cars regardless of a job or not. I currently work PT at autozone it's a good place to get knowledge if you already know the basics because you learn products best for a car, oil, you change batteries, lights, and you learn all the parts of a car.

I've been a car girl for my whole life. My dad's a big car guy so he got me into that...for a while I was all about the exterior. The glitz and glam and sleek designs. I designed my own concept cars and even sent some designs to major car companies when I was in middle school in the mid 2000s. Now I'm almost 27 and I'm enrolling myself in Penn Foster online automotive school. People are calling it a toilet paper degree....I'm calling it a first step forward. As I've matured, I've fallen in love with the complexity and simultaneous simplicity of engines. I've fallen in love with computers and the brilliant minds behind them. And I've never wanted anything more than to speak the language of the vehicle...I started teaching mechanics to myself on my own, so school is a breeze. All I can say is...I'm happy to be following my heart. People always discouraged me, telling me shops wouldn't hire a female. Let me show up and fix something major and let them see my skill.

It's my dream job to work on cars and trucks. School, Dads car, your own car in the driveway? offer to help friends with their cars? come on man, this is the kind of self-thought employers like to see, if youre constantly asking them "How2dothis??" theyre gonna get tired of nannying you. Maybe that's your problem and why you havent gotten hired yet.

Don't waste your money. Fixing automobiles is not rocket science. Go spend a couple hundred bucks some used automotive textbooks, get a set of decent hand tools and start learning. If you get stuck, bring your car to a pro to get fixed and ask him if you can pick his brain afterwards. Any decent mechanic is going to be willing to explain things to you. Network on social media and find some mechanic friends near you. Don't waste your money on school. Especially UTI.

I’ve heard abounguys going to junk yards to work on cars and figure stuff out. Just buy a cheap set of tools, Home Depot or Lowes or even Harbor Freight and head on out to the junk yard and start taking stuff apart and then put it back together.

I am a female interested in auto mechanics. I am a licensed counselor with a masters degree. I only have a little bit of experience working with my neighbor on my pick up truck. Do you think someone would let me apprentice in a shop. I would do it for free on the weekends just for the experience. Thanks!

Find out who the owner is, schedule some appts with local shops in your area and go pitch them the idea. Shops are in desperate need of good mechanics. Also check out the channel Women Auto Know.

Too bad most people don’t hire girls though. I’ve always wanted to be a mechanic, I love learning how things work... I even like taking the old parts out and taking them apart just to see what they are made of and how they work. I know a little bit here and a little bit there but not enough to do anything on my own. I have a actually been donating my time and helping a family friend at his job working on Mack trucks and front end loaders then going to his personal garage to do little side jobs . I want nothing more than to be a mechanic... but it’s extremely hard when you’re a girl trying to do a “mans” job.

Too high prices and poor job done in most of auto repair places is the direct result of what you are writing about.

Wow. I saw this whole video. I agree with alot of this but im a manager in retail. I think this transfers very well to retail. In the screening process you don't till 3 or 6 months later exactly who this person is. Because they are acting the first 30 or 60 days. Alot of smart mechanics, aren't always nice mechanics. Nice mechanics that are not that smart is sometimes, the route you got to go with so that you can avoid dealing with the arrogant mechanic that knows alot. Looking are resume and trying to see they worked a while wherever they applied. All of these are good things, but through it all, hiring someone new is always a risk.
