Well In this video I break down the steps to getting started in the Merchant Marine Industry, & also 3 different type of ways you can get into the industry. @@chestercheeto9768 You have to have your Twic prior. I have a medical exemption via Covid vaccine which is a requirement so my Mariner Goals are experiencing a delay. The Ships all require vaccination.I wish you the best on your Goals...

At piney point, which is the program Tre went to, his information is correct if you go to the Deck Department. They just changed the program for Stewart Department. You will start making legit money ($6,000/month) during 2nd phase. Which is right after your 15 weeks. A lot of people in my class switched from Deck to Stewart just to get paid and be done with the program faster. There is no 3rd-5th phase for Stewart Department anymore. Piney point is also still not taking students for the engine department right now.

Sup bro, just had two questions though. You said the SIU apprenticeship takes 6 to 8 months and then another year on top of that to start earning real money. So basically then you gotta plan for 1.5 to 2 years before the money kick in? or did the one year of not earning "real money" include the 6-8 months? ... and when you graduate the whole apprenticeship do you start as an OS? No prob. You apply for the MMC in what you want to enter into ENTRY LEVEL. That would be Wiper, Steward, or Ordinary Seaman. The Unlicensed Ratings. While doing this at the same time I would contact Union Halls and Employers to find out what their MINIMUM Standards are for STCW and what jobs are hot at the moment to break into them. Some Unions/Employer requirements are more than others. Coastal States with Ports will have several STCW type schools in them. Most give the basic classes once a month at each school. Think on saving up at least $2K for the school and living expenses for a week if you live away from them. AirB&B or extended stay hotels are your friends here. Passport, TWIC, Talk to the Union, Apply for your MMC, get into the minimum required Classes, sign on to a company or Union... You are in like Flynn! Apply as soon as possible because the Coast Guard is S-L-O-W-W-W-W-W-W!

I'm curious about the field and just have a few questions to ask and I hope this is the right place to do so: 1. When you come home, what is your lifestyle like? (do you go out a lot, see friends/family, have time to enjoy yourself) 2. Is it best to rent or own a home near major ports? 3. Outside of work, are you normally close with friends and family/have a decent social support group? (or are you more of a loner?) 4. Is it possible to spend less than 6 months at sea and still make enough money to pay rent and live decently? 5. Do you plan on making a career out of it? (If so, what opportunities for growth are there?) 6. If you don't plan on being in the field for the rest of your life, what are some jobs or careers that you can transition to? I was able to get my Twic card and my passport before everything else. FROM WHAT I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING you have to get into a Marine Academy, SIU or a Trade School (8-whatever many months program) to get your MMC. Then you find jobs to apply for or if you went to the Academy (most expensive and time consuming route) you'll be given a job? SIU FROM WHAT I'VE BEEN TOLD starts you at the very bottom but I IS free from WHAT I'VE READ and HEAR in this video. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. The basic question is "Do I need to get the TWIC card before, during, or after training?" in which case, again, you will need that but you can get it WAY before you do any type of training.

Your and other's videos have been extremely helpful. Filling out the MMC App was a piece of cake. I have received my MEDICAL CERT after about a month. I am waiting on MMC Book ACTUAL in my hand. So far... One month and TEN days waiting and it is killing me because I want to get out there. Two Unions said they would hire me on the SPOT with one shipping out time would be less than a week and SIU might be longer. SO. Medical Card in hand and MMC APPLICATION ACCEPTED (maybe past PQEB). Passport Book and Card took 6 months during HIGH COVID. TWIC was three weeks toward the end of the COVID mess.

What exactly do you put on forms as far as endorsements the schools website doesn’t really explain it well for the medical and the application I get wiper but do you just put the stcws on the medical form K after because you wouldn’t have them yet applying for the school so you shouldn’t put them on and do I check the box that says Stcw even if I don’t have it yet on the application B form so confusing

All personnel onboard merchant vessels go through a basic security course in some way. If ships are traveling through dangerous areas, some companies will actually hire private security contractors to come onboard ships with firearms.

I took the route of getting my credentials alone and from a school. I didn’t go to Piney Point. In my opinion. the easiest route is doing it alone. Piney Point was wanting too much for a lot of stress. It’s only worth it because it’s through the union.
