It's very rare to land a mid to high level job as a Network Admin or Network Engineer without any prior IT experience or IT background. Most Network Admin jobs requires 3 to 5 years of experience. You generally start out as a Help Desk Technician before moving up. For Sys Admin guys Desktop Support is generally the next step up from Help Desk before moving into a Jr. Sys Admin role. For larger organizations, everything is moving to the cloud since the traditional Network/Systems Administrator role will soon be obsolete thats evolving into Cloud/Virtualization which you could be working for a 3 party IT cloud company or MPS. Microsoft already retired their industry standard MSCA, MCSE for Windows Server Administrators replaced with Azure Microsoft 365, and Cloud Administrator.

You gotta work your way up starting from the bottom ie. Help desk, desktop support, coffee fetcher, etc.

I want to break into cybersecurity, but I know I have to understand about network and system administration first, and cloud, and virtualization, and servers, and OS. The only decision I still don't know is: which way to take first, or... in case I take Network, after my Network+, should I go deep into Network and get a CCNA and CCNP before going to Cybersecurity, should I start learning more about system admins subject like Active Directory and OS, or should I go to Security+ and learn all of those other things I said previously as I go?

Thanks for the great comment :) much appreciated. While I agree that you will need to learn some networking and systems administration before getting into cybersecurity - I don't think you need to become certified to do so. If I were you I'd get a decent understanding of Windows AD environments, Linux CLI, and some CCNA level knowledge of networking. You can do that through content online or on training sites. I dont think I'd bother with any of the CompTIA certs though. The Cyber Mentor youtube channel is a great place to start with Penetration Testing once you've picked up some of these skills above. You can get it done much faster than you think!

A+ is a more well rounded cert. It also covers the fundamentals of Networking. Now Net+ is just that. It’s the fundamentals plus a little more. It builds off the network section of A+. I think skipping A+ is not a good idea. You are better off doing A+ and if you want to go the networking route you should consider CCNA.

miriam fuentes hi Miriam I’m personally not familiar with that program. But I definitely think it’s possible to get CCNA certified within 6 months using self study and probably the fraction of the cost. It’s what I did and it has worked out really well!!

@@miriamfuentes3034 personally I think using multiple vendors for you training needs is always best. For CCNA level, I'd recommend ITProTV and CBT Nuggets. The FSNA is really aimed toward becoming a jack of all trades. CCNA will focus more on diving deep into networking if that's what you love. You can learn about other disciplines in IT as you go and grow.

Depends. Network Engineer is just a title, so it matters what company you work for. I've seen Network Engineers who work in NOC's, run cables all day, provide end-user support, or all of the above. In IT you'll have a lot of titles, but the job doesn't line up with what we know it to be, that is because every company has different needs. Physically, I would say it's your standard, "Can you pick up a 10-50lb box?" if you can do that, that's about as physical as it'll get unless you're implementing a new network rack into a server room, running cables all day, or getting a new office setup for your company. Like many jobs, it can be very minimal physical work for 2 months, then very physical for a few weeks depending on the events. You may never do anything really physical aside from picking up a 2U switch or new box from a vendor.

It does depend on the job and especially your qualifucations. Kust starting ojt with or without a ccna, its probably just basic physical stuff in the beginning at least and progresses slowly. Well, "physucal" is the wrong word. More like laborous. installing devices in a rack on the field for a client, plugging in as required. Just basics work so the pros CCNP and CCIEs can remote on. Probably for a different company.
