In this video, I had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Cynthia Wozow, a Physical Medicine and Rehab doctor about life as a PM&R physician, what it takes to become a rehab doctor, potential specialties after residency, and living with cerebral palsy (CP)! Enjoy this inspiring interview!
What is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation?
Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry or rehabilitation medicine, aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. A physician having completed training in this field is referred to as a physiatrist. Unlike other medical specialties that focus on a medical “cure,” the goals of the physiatrist are to maximize patients’ independence in activities of daily living and improve quality of life.
Physiatrists are experts in designing comprehensive, patient-centered treatment plans, and are integral members of the care team. They utilize cutting-edge as well as time-tested treatments to maximize function and quality of life for their patients, who can range in age from infants to octogenarians.
Some of the common diagnoses and populations seen by inpatient physiatrists include spinal cord injury, brain injury (traumatic and non-traumatic), stroke, multiple sclerosis, polio, burn care, and musculoskeletal and pediatric rehabilitation. Inpatient physiatrists are often trained using collaborative team skills and work with social workers and other allied health therapists (e.g., physical, occupational and speech) to manage these issues.
School required to become a PMR doctor:
4 years of college
4 years of medical school
4 years of residency

This was a great video. Is it possible to talk more about dealing with disabilities and wanting to pursue medical careers? Does PMR work with any post MI rehabilitation patients?
@algreen70
@algreen70 6 жыл бұрын
I'm interested in this as well. I've read that PMR does do some cardiac rehab, but I'd imagine that would be more in the realm of cardiology. Hopefully you'll get a response.

Thanks for the video! I don't quite understand the functional day-to-day difference between physiatry and PT except that one is a medical doctor and one is a different doctoral degree. Can someone clear that up for me?
@Camarophobic
@Camarophobic 6 жыл бұрын
Liuhuayue A physiatrist is responsible for the whole treatment plan for the patient; including pain management (prescribing medications, administering interspinous injections), PT, OT, speech and swallwoing, counseling. In addition, physiatrists order and interpret labs and radiographic images, on top of obtaining a history and doing a physical examination, to determine whether a patient is fit for rehabilitation or not and to assess the degree to which they (patients) will benefit from it (rehabilitation). Maybe a PT can better answer you about what they do.

Hey Dr. Webb. Question for you. Would you happen to know the average annual cost of malpractice insurance?
@antoniowebbmd

Good question but it varies by specialty, practice type and location. Highest would be OBGYN which for some people can be almost 6 figures a year

Hey Dr Webb. What you are doing is amazing. I would like to give you a recommendation for a future video where you can talk abour CRNA ( nurse anesthetist) maybe you can explain their role and talk about the differences between CRNA abd anesthesiologist. I would greatly appreciate it and im sure other will too. I am an aspiring CRNA by the way but I do have my thought of going to medical school. Thank yo lu @antonio J. Webb MD

Thank you for taking your time to look into it you are awesome. I am a nurse at the ICU in Miami and I am applying to CRNA school now. To be honest I am not 100% sure about what I want do because I love the idea of becoming a physician and how I would love a life where I can get home after work and read about the patho of a certain illness but I am so scared that I would be sacrificing too much. I wish I could fly out and shadow you for a month to see what its like. Thank you again

How does a PM&R work alongside PT, OT, & SLP?
@antoniowebbmd
@antoniowebbmd 6 жыл бұрын
Good question. PMR doctors oversee the overall patient care in terms of medications, admitting the patient to the hospital, ordering and interpreting labs and diagnostic tests such as CT scans, EKGS, labs, performing physical exams, ordering physical therapy, etc and the PT/OT staff will work with the patient in terms of mobility, ambulating, and activities of daily living/ADLs. Its a team though and everyone works together to take care of the patient.

Think of everything in life that can mess up your ability to do things (car crash, cerebral palsy, stroke, heart attack, cancer, surgery, and on and on and on...). Now imagine one person with each of those issues asking you exactly how they are supposed to heal and recover (what drugs, when, how much, how to sleep, eat, think, what to avoid). Now imagine something going wrong for all of them, once a week. That takes a doctor’s training and body of knowledge, not just a PT
