$43,000 is the same teacher’s salary those in Virginia make and the cost of living in northern Virginia is much higher than in Florida. Virginia taxes are high... I live in both states; this is why I know this about the cost of living. In Virginia, a school counselor is different from a school psychologist; however, it sounds to me as if in Florida school counselors do psychologist work... am I correct?

Thank you! As a career changer into school counseling and about to start my practicum and field work in Maryland, your video was helpful and inspiring! Many states, like Maryland only require a MS in School Counseling from a CACREP accredited university (online or brick and mortar). Maryland also has no additional examination to work as a school counselor which makes it easier to transition I believe. How was your fieldwork and practicum experience? What advice would you offer regarding preparation for the time commitment and continuing to generate income for someone with a more entrepreneurial spirit like yourself? I look forward to seeing more on your experience to serve as an additional perspective moving forward.

Stella Hernandez Hi there and thank you for watching and you are very welcome😊 if you’re deep into your current undergrad major I would suggest completing that degree program and then apply for the Masters Degree program in school Counseling or Counseling. Depending on the grad school they will list their requirements to apply. My undergrad degree was in Business and Marketing, and then I went and got my Masters in School Guidance and Counseling. I used to do retail for Saks and NY&Co which is why I majored in business and marketing but then I realized I wanted to make a difference in kids lives. I honestly love being a School Counselor and those who want to go into typically become amazing counselors so you are already in a good mindset 😊 I will create a career playlist which will have more specific details about grad school, etc. Again thanks so much for watching ❤️

Is it hard finding a job after completing
@SherleyMaxine5 жыл бұрын
Crystal Ellis it depends on your location and which grade level you’re interested in. The typical elementary school only has one school counselor, middle school has about 3, and high school depending on size has 4+ counselors. In Florida there’s always positions open at the end of the school year and down here there’s a rise of counselors getting ready to retire. When I graduated from grad school my school counseling supervisor helped me get my first school counseling job. It really just depends.

@SherleyMaxine4 жыл бұрын
Stormi Brooks the university I attended accepted students who earned a 3.0 and higher without taking the GRE exam for admissions. I can look into universities that don’t require the graduate school exam entrance test for students with less than a 3.0 gpa

My GPA of a 2.7 is close to a 3.0. I was thinking about contacting the school to tell them about my 2.7 score, but I am afraid of rejection. Especially, if the program & school is very competitive. Why do you think it takes a special person to be an elementary school counselor?
@SherleyMaxine5 жыл бұрын
Alysha Evans because younger kids require a bit more emotional attention for their emotional and social development. An elementary Counselor has to have great deal patience when dealing with younger children. High school counselor are fast paced, teaching adolescents how to overcome and conquer. Elementary counselors have to take their time and truly help build the children effectively without making the kids feel like they’re being rushed.
