"KZbin is a friendship simulator" - 100% true. KZbin is something you play in the background because it tricks your brain into thinking someone is interacting with you.

A very appropriate metaphor. In the days of TV/Radio, its broadcast nature meant that you (on some level) understood that it was a show, but things like KZbin/Twitch (and arguably all of social media) intentionally blur the line between the "show" and the person making it to ensure you were always on it. In retrospect, Chris Crocker taking the criticisms of Britney Spears _personally_ was a forerunner for things to come - few of us predicted we would *all* become Chris Crocker 13 years later.

@variableparagraph3 жыл бұрын
@@garyenkwong1683 why did your 2nd sentence hurt a lil lmao. I just realized that when we read something we always hear it “said” from our inner voice, which is so familiar to us.. And I guess that’s why even just reading comments can give you that sort of illusion of connection with someone. The friendship simulator idea as a description of what youtube is is SO fucking spot on.

So basically, trash taste advice is: #1 Be (the best version of) yourself - it's okay to exaggerate, but not okay to be fake #2 Know your audience and niche - you can't please everyone and that's normal, just find a unique way to make yourself memorable #2.5 Know what tools you're working with - it's okay to be inspired, but not okay to copy #3 Shoot to make your content as good as/better than everyone else - the algorithm doesn't give a fuck about your channel size #4 Successful KZbinrs makes you want to be their friend

This podcast is the best example of a friendship simulator for me. Whenever I watch it I feel like I’m hanging out with you guys. The work I’m doing rn requires me to be alone in my room at my computer and just draw on my tablet and if I don’t play music in the bg or talk on the phone with my bf or something, it eventually gets to a point when I just feel isolated and lonely and restless and don’t want to work at all because it feels like I’m wasting my time. But when I put on your podcast it feels like I have company (but also without the burden of wondering how to join in the conversation and contribute instead of just being awkward or boring or weird or something...). It feels really cozy and I love it.

I like what you said about "friend simulator" I've been thinking about that ALOT But the more I think about it the more I realize that all media is ment to fill that gap. TV sitcoms were ment to fill your home with a personality, reality TV, cooking shows, game show hosts their all ment to make you feel close with a given person. It's why people "love" celebrities that they've never met.

Oddly enough, when I talked to my friends about youtube and they watched my videos, they were a bit surprised as people who know me in my personal life since I'm very quiet and reserved in conversation (unless its stuff I like talking about) But since I like to talk about the stuff I make, I kinda enjoy being this "heightened" person I made who loves talking about shit and having fun with it and like you said, even though this person I am carving on youtube is myself I wouldn't wanna be that person all the time since I would come off as a dick and I would annoy myself. I guess its similar to going to work since you're not the same at your job as you are at home, and if you were you would be insufferable to be around. (I guess treating it as a job is another thing as well if you think about it) Also doing something unique is so hard since when I try to think what I could do different, my mind goes blank, but its something I just gotta keep working on and see what I can do. I'd be interested to hear your guys thoughts on twitch and how that differs from youtube since its like a different ballpark in terms of content and how you put yourself across.

I feel like for most things where the stock advice is "be yourself", be it youtube, dating, or whatever, the advice should be "be the best version of yourself you can". Also, work on your "standard" self so that not only you can be a better person in your daily life, but also the "best" version becomes better and better, and on a bad day, when you can't be your "best" version, you still have an okay personality.

About being ourselves Dave Grohl: "get in [your] garage and just suck. And get their friends to come in and they’ll suck, too. And then they’ll fucking start playing and they’ll have the best time they’ve ever had in their lives and then all of a sudden they’ll become Nirvana." Yeah, the thing is we suck at anything, you "just need" to get better. And that means to be able to change. Maybe the issue is "identity" but is not something easy to explain in a panel. Is not something that will "sink" either even on a whole year.

Been thinking about starting a new channel again. Okay Im not sure if "new" is the right term, Idk if that old Minecraft channel that probably everyone had once in their live counts as one lol. But anyway I thought for quite some time that I wanted to do a video again on a different subject and therefore a new channel. Problem is Im just too fucking lazy to bring myself to do anything especially since I really want to finish the Higurashi VN right now lol. Maybe I can start with it after finishing what I want to do but Im not sure if I can keep a channel running again since I quickly start treating it more like a job and not a hobby and therefore find myself thinking "I HAVE to make a video" and not "I want to make a video". Additionally idk if Im creative enough to post more videos. Currently Im thinking about staring it once I find the right time and just see where its going to lead. If Ill only be able to make a video every 1 or even 2 months then thats fine for me. KZbin will demolish me for doing that but if I can make videos that I personally like that way then Im fine with it. Who knows, maybe someday Ill be more creative and start making more vids (if I even start with the whole thing)? Would be great if I can overcome my lazyness but Im not expecting that much from me lol, just gonna see where itll lead to
