When the markets are down, your TSP is losing value but it’s not losing money. So, when the market is down, as it is now, there is only one thing to do: BUY! Buy when prices (markets) are down. So when the markets go back up, the value of your portfolio will increase dramatically. That’s how you get to $1M.

@@homehere9817 If you’re not close to retirement, put all your TSP into the C fund. Leave it there. When the markets are down, your TSP will lose value but you’re not losing money as long as you leave it alone. You will be buying shares in the C fund (the TSP managers do this for you) when the prices are lower. Once the markets go back up, your portfolio will be worth considerably more.

Not sure if you figured it out but here's how he's calculating the columns (beginning balance + annual contribution) * annual return = interest interest + (beginning balance + annual contribution) = total with interest The next year your beginning balance is the previous year's total with interest. Then you do it all over again.

Question for anyone that can help - my spouse age 38 has 225k in TSP all C fund from 15 years of government service. She may be calling it a career to be a stay at home mom. Is it realistic to think that amount may grow to 1 million in 16-17 years? I was thinking an average 9 percent rate of return and if she hits that number earlier move everything to G fund and be done with the stock market. Spoke with a financial advisor who told me that this was unrealistic. Thoughts?
@FIREPsyChat Жыл бұрын
At age 38, $225K with a 9% average annual return will reach the balance of $1 Million by age 55. The only variable is the 9% return. We could see a 7%, 8%, or 10%, right? Why did your financial advisor say that it's unrealistic? Also, by moving your entire fund from C to G fund, how long do you anticipate that TSP to last?
@briananderson9242 Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond! Really want to state how much I appreciate your channel and words of wisdom! Advisor was pushing very conservative numbers and running 5-7 percent rate of return. I’m thinking 9 percent is average/realistic for the C fund. It was recently decided to do the stay at home mother part so for the TSP can’t rely on contributions and just market growth of course so advisor really burst my bubble a bit. Do you feel that 9 percent is a fair number for C fund growth long term (17-18 years)? The TSP will last for our lifetime. We will be going with a MetLife joint annuity. Based on our ages at that time (57 and 55) with 1 million it will provide $4500-$5200 a month which will be close to her current salary.
