Becoming a U.S. citizen has many amazing benefits. In this video, Michael Ashoori explains how to become a U.S. citizen. Specifically, Michael Talks about the naturalization requirements and the naturalization process.
Naturalization Requirements:
1 . Must be 18 years old
2. Must have your green card for at least 5 years. If you are married to U.S. citizen there’s a special rule where you may be eligible to apply for citizenship after only 3 years instead of 5 years.
3. Continuous residence - watch out for absences of 6 months to a year or more.
4. Physical presence
5. Reside in the same state for 3 months
6. Good moral character
7. English proficiency
8. Civics test - basic understanding of US government and US history
9. Oath of Allegiance
Overall Process:
1. File an application with USCIS. The application is the Form N-400.
2. Biometrics Appointment
3. Naturalization Interview: You’ll go in for an interview with USCIS.
4. Oath of Allegiance - about 2-4 weeks after the interview you will support and defend the constitution.

Hi, I have a question. While completing N-400, they run the eligibility criteria first and there is a question that asks if I had moved in the past 3 months. How do I answer it if I'm just back from a foreign tour of 3 months, although I'm back in the same state that I have been living in for the last 3 years? Please advise.

Thank you so much for great information. I have two questions. 1. I am married to us citizen as you said I can apply after 3 year. Be physically in the United States for at least 18 months out of the 3 years immediately preceding the date of filing the application. He came last time in 2019 and has not come back since because of Covid-19. Does any of his previous physical presence of more than 6 months in US will be counted if he applies for Citizenship. To apply citizenship, a person have to stay inside the US for at least 30 months in the last 5 years before application. Knowing the application process will take at least 3 month, may the person submit the application after he stay inside the US for 27 months?

Question-I have a greencard and am out of the US for already 4 months. I have travel documents valid till 2021. In oreder to avoid disruption to citizenship-I understand have to come to US before 6 months since i left. Now there is COVID19 and travel problems etc.- can this reuirement to avoid disruption be relaxed for the covid time?

Hi this is a great question! Absences of between 6 months and 1 year will break the continuity of residence requirement, unless you can demonstrate that you did not disrupt your continuity of residence. Here is some helpful evidence to show that you did not disrupt your continuity of residence: Showing that you maintained employment in the U.S. Showing that you did not obtain employment outside of the U.S. Showing that your immediate family remained in the U.S. Showing that you maintained a U.S. residence (ex. Lease agreement, utility bills, etc.) The COVID-19 pandemic should also help to show that you did not intend to stay outside of the U.S. for 6 months, but that it was outside of your control. Another important note is that you should make sure not to be out of the U.S. for longer than a year because after a year, it is definitely considered a disruption of your continuity of residence. I hope this helps!!

thank you for the video, I have a question. Are there any consequences if a green card holder makes a 3-months trip outside of the USA for all 5 years he is considering for naturalization? Consider, the Green cardholder had a job, house (leased/owned, paid taxes). Will he be eligible for naturalization? Somebody who spends three months a year outside the US should not encounter any issues with citizenship. For example many teachers travel when school isn't in session.

My mother brought us to the US wen I was 7-8 around 88-89 she kept doing all she was told to do and she struggled by her self she was happy when she finally got her citizenship and upset at same time because both my sister and brother who are younger than me I’m the oldest of 3 they automatically become citizens except me because I was then 18y so I didn’t become citizens but I did become permanent resident I’m 40 years now and I’m still a resident I was told after 5 years I could become citizens I don’t know that I had to apply I thought it was just a waiting game now I did renewed it ones but now it’s expired because I totally forgot all about it life and work had all my attention so I’ve been a permanent resident for over 20 years and my card just expired what should I do now I lost my job and I’m broke renew cost $800+ how much is citizenship going to cost me?????
