1) at which point do you choose what to specialise in? like if you want to work in a ward or with eating disorders or with people who are overweight etc when do you choose this? 2) are there any post graduate courses you can do after graduating in a nutrition and dietetics course which can help you specialise in the specific branch of nutrition you want to do? 3) what is the difference between nutritionist and dietician? 4) what a levels do you recommend taking?

Hi Nichola. Thanks for this very informative video. I'm hoping to start the postgraduate course as I already have a degree in Psychology , but I don't have Biology, Chemistry or Physics A Levels . I am emailing universities about their prerequisites, and I wondered if you had any advice what I might need for the application (work experience)? I also wondered whether you have more advice about shadowing as I have contacted all the hospitals and community dietitians in my county and they aren't offering open days or shadowing opportunities . The people I know who are dietitians can't seem to help. What should I do?

This is really helpful! It's great to see a UK vid on this as I feel there are many US dietitian videos. I am wondering if you have any advice for getting accepted into Loughborough for Sport Science, I am worried if I go straight into a dietetics degree I may limit myself (I'm also not 100% sure of my career path) and was not aware of the post-grad route (my original plan was to study SS at Loughborough and see which part of the degree I favoured most). I am worried as I have not taken A level Biology and Food Tech as I was not sure of my career path. I study A level psych, pe, geography and core maths. Thanks in advance! X

Natalia Rooks hello! Thanks :) You'll be ok if you take relevant modules in the sports science degree. I loved Lboro and my main advice is to go for straight As in your a levels or be AMAZING at sport.. if you're one or the other you will get in!!! X

+sue Ali Hi Sue, Most hospitals are indeed stopping shadowing opps and instead offer 1/2 a day 'experience days' for 'what does a dietitian do' - I know we do! Or maybe ask friends if they know any dietitians? Shadowing dietitians in group situations in the community may be easier than on the wards. Good luck!

Hello Nichola I am really interested applying next year,and I was wondering if you could help me. I have no idea where to start and I definitely have to start from the very beginning. I started Uni in Hungary-Budapest as a psychologist but I was 2 young and wasn't really sure if I want that. So after 1,5year I quit. Since then I've been on a journey finding myself,and just recently had this clear vision that I want to help people with their diet and struggles. I was always into fitness and health,this is my only passion at this moment. If you can arrange to shadow a dietitian that would be great or try to attend a 'what a dietitian does' day at your local hospital. I would contact the uni that you want to go to and ask for the prerequisites too! Hope this helps!! x

James Marshall definitely! Only those registered with HCPC can work as a dietitian. BDA is just a trade union, not a governing body x

Hello! I suppose you need to decide if you want to become a dietitian (& many people do retrain later in life) or a nutritionist.. The latter isn't a protected title however you can become a registered nutritionist if you've been on an approved course. You could contact the British dietetic association & British nutrition foundation & association for nutrition for information.. Dietetics is full time but you do get a government bursary. hi, I know your comment is 5 months old now, but just in case you weren't aware - You can get full student finance funding as well as maintenance loan (even if you've already done a degree as it's a healthcare course) - and you can also get a healthcare studies grant of £5000 each year you study. You can definitely afford it if you want to pursue it

Hi Nic, do you see people privately who want to improve upon their health? I.e could I contact you and see you in a clinic to get advice on my current diet? I'm just about to start reading the Patrick Holford "Bible" but think someone who has qualifications who I can actually converse with would be much better!
