As a professional recordist, I kindly suggest you get a few things to get started. 1. Solid microphone - condenser type - Audio Technica, or Shure are trusted. Run about $199-299. 2. Mixer - Tascam or Zoom. Run about $199-299. 3. XLR cables - $19.99-$50. Don't skimp here, bad/ cheap cables produce a hum, and accept interference from wifi, or other wireless devices. 4. Laptop or Desktop, to edit, and editing software, a DAW would be helpful or Adobe Audition. 5. Storage - External or Cloud service. You gotta send those finished files to be approved for payment. 6. Regular blankets arranged around the space really eliminate most of the echo, and external noises, like a leaf blower. Well, any loud noises will be picked up by the mics, so a quiet space is essential. Happy recording!

I have a deep baritone voice that many say I sound like Barry White, Sylvester Stallone, Sam Elliot and Dennis Hayesburt (the AllState guy), Jack Nicholson and Johnny Cash. People almost constantly said they love my voice and that I should be on radio. So naturally I started thinking in that general direction. I know I definitely have the face for radio, lol!

So here I am looking up videos on here and I came across your video, you are so full of life, you should be in front of the camera on the big screen, I love your energy and you're so beautiful, the camera loves you!! Great video and so helpful with your tips on how to get started. Your voice over done with your iPhone was perfect, who would know, couldn't even tell it was done on your phone. I thought I was the only mom feeling like this because other moms left and right have careers even with small kids but we chose for me to be home with them and although it was the best decision I always get that feeling of “what about me?” Or what will I do when my kids grow up and leave? I plan to become a certified court translator or maybe use my certification to do freelance work but meanwhile trying to find small gigs while I’m still home with my little one. Cheers 🥂 to finding something fulfilling to do and succeed. Blessings to you.

I record from my bedroom, with a blanket over my head. I also only used my built-in computer microphone. I just purchased a Yeti X Professional mic this week to enhance the quality of my future recordings, but I passed ACX standards in my bedroom, under a blanket & recording directly onto my computer. Nothing fancy needed for beginners. Also, the company loved my voice & will be sending me more work soon. I love it!

Kat, FAN-FREAKIN'-TASTIK video! Thank you SO SO SO much for lifting the veil and just letting us know how to get started -annnnd for the mindset for us to just not complicate it! I did radio ads years ago that people loved. But I recorded it formally for a business that paid to have all the sound work done at a local studio. Now I want to take those samples and get a foot in the door to get started doing voice work more seriously. But I've been all freaked out that I have to spend a crazy amount on equipment. I encountered a voice artist online that really makes it seem so difficult to break in to the industry. I saw that he just wanted to keep things all secretive and not have people thinking they could just start right away with the talent they were born with! -I literally LOVE your channel (and your voice sample project shared was great! Your clients got a quality product so who cares if it was done on an iPhone... Also, love the video you did with your friend King on upleveling financially). Sending so many Beatnik finger snaps of approval your way...lol! (What software do you use to edit your voice artist projects? And, do you have a video on...how you recorded this video? Haaa!)

He strongly suggested I give it a go, but I've never jumped on it. I have had a stutter all my life and I'm worried that it will affect my work or simply make it take too much time. I was told I could be a voice-over artist by a Radio/Communications professor I had years ago. I have some experience with vocal training whether it is through Radio, Theatre and overall singing. I have been considering doing it. At this point in my life, there is no excuse. I can at least try using the websites you've mention and more, buy a mic/XLR equipment and just START! I've been a little hard on myself, constantly telling myself that the VO industry is too competitive and too hard to breakthrough. Thanks for your videos. They are very helpful and encouraging.

Thank you this! I just ordered the mic you're using. It'll get here today (yay prime haha) 🙌 I'm a teacher who left the classroom after my second child and reading children's books is my passion 😄 I hope I can be the voice for someone's story 🥰

Kat, thank you so much for this inspiring video! I've been curious about VO for some time. Several years ago, I took a VO class and had my voice reviewed and the instructor encouraged me to get into the field (narration, audiobooks, etc.). Life happened and I had to postpone this pursuit. I've been told by countless people for years (family and colleagues) that I have a great voice and that it's soothing and relatable. Thank you for awakening the dream! I'm encouraged to start and will not overthink it. Let the journey begin! Again, many thanks.

Im in Love with your mic, its cute and round..is this where I admit to being a nerdy geeky radiomaker? Thanks for the awesome tips!! I already bought a mic so I'm all over these ones!!

I think I bought it for the shape haha! It is nice that I am not constantly hitting it like the lapel mic.

@@KatTheo It sure is, maybe hide the lapel mic in your hair? Then also not hit it. Don't hit yourself haha.

I was an actor 25 years ago and I can do a ton of accents. I also have a trained voice and have done a lot of public speaking. I really want to get into this full time because I can take this job anywhere. I want my job to move WITH ME.

I really enjoyed this video; it was straightforward and informative. You have a great personality and are very encouraging. Sometimes, people inadvertently turn folks off because the way that they describe the task (becoming a voice-over artist) is daunting and, therefore, intimidating. You are very positive and encouraging and I'm sure that people will feel emboldened to take a leap of faith due to your heartening approach. Thank you for sharing!

This is great! The simplest tool to tell a beginner! As beginners we don't want to buy too much stuff, but after we make some $$, we can save up and upgrade. Just what I wanted to hear. Thanks for sharing. :)
