I´m currently working on a TV series and find your videos incredibly helpful.:) Yet there´s something that´s been on my mind for quite a while. Maybe you can help me: Ever since I started writing I had to deal some serious confusion regarding the use of camera directions. I know they´re a big no no in spec scripts. But I´m planning on (hopefully) being a showrunner , so in my case a series bible and a look book will be provided as well....... I´m also a huge fan of the Duffer brothers and Stranger Things. My own series is inspired by their style of writing, so naturally I´ve read their show bible and pilot (spec and production) many times. The thing that confuses me is that their spec script is written with directions like PAN, TILT UP etc. ....... I do have a clear vision on how the movements should be in my head and find it easier to just name them....... So what should I do?

sollody this is a great question. Generally the series bible and look book are not viewed by directors since they are selling tools rather than production tools. Where as it is always better to find alternative ways of wording directing phrases like “close up” or “overhead shot of” with a phrase like “angle on”; in a series bible it is less of an issue. Can I pitch my pilot to a production company even if it’s in novel format? Or do I HAVE to change it into a screenplay?

How do you protect your idea before you start sending it out? What if you primarily have a pitch, but no title yet. You have a pitch, plot outline, bible but no pilot yet. Essentially my question is what is the best way to protect your pitch? so they don't just take it, change the names/locations around and steal your idea?

You can register your series Bible or treatment (written in prose document of your story and characters) with the WGA. Google WGA register and you should find it. It cost a small fee and is generally good for two years. Keep in mind, an “idea” can’t completely be legally protected because the chances of multiple people having a similar idea is high. However, an intellectual property can be legally protected. The more you have in writing with specifics, story and character arcs, style, tone, and a unique writer’s voice; the more you can protect your creative property. Best of luck to you!

Is a series bible like a blueprint or formula for the entire series and does it have a format or is it different for each series developer or showrunner?

The series Bible has become a somewhat generic term now for a document which gives summary information on an original series. In a more formal context, the series Bible is a document which is used AFTER your series is greenlit to give to your writers room writers as a way to familiarize them with your series. In this context yes, the studio and network may have some say in what eventually ends up in the series Bible.
