Idk if it's a gesture of friendship per se but I also noticed early on that when approaching a cat with my hand, even if it's already become okay with my presence and come to me, they always seemed to want to inspect (read: sniff) it before pets, and if you didn't let them or rushed it they drew back and weren't 100% on board. Also they've always seemed fine sniffing the back and side of my hand. Not sure I agree with approaching with finger pointed / man-claw open tbh. A great thing I heard once: keeping a dog will teach a man responsibility; keeping a cat teaches him consent.

@@JoshWalker1 Cats frequently touch noses as a sign of recognition. Pointing your finger at a "nose friendly" level gives the cat something to touch his nose to. It's a good technique especially for shy cats. Most cats perceive it as non threatening.

That happens with dogs most commonly, aggressive ones are known to bite off fingers so for them you can approach your whole fist slowly for them to sniff, if they bite you will significantly minimize the damage.

Another good way is to get on their level... No need to appear large. They are more receptive when they feel like you're the same size.. I found in my experience

I also approach gently and move in a more catlike way on the balls of my feet rather than stomping over. And kinda side on and hesitant so it's not like charging them or cornering them. But mostly I sit and let them come to me and let my hand dangle and make pspsps noises and scratch their heads when they come by and give them time to get used to me.

Personally I use my glasses to introduce myself to cats I’ve just met. I use the temple tip of my glasses which has my scent on it. That way I’m not risking injury while interacting with new cats.

I find that also just slightly curling your finger, so that it isn't really pointing the finger helps too. Relax the muscles in your finger, and the cat will see/notice the lack of muscle tension in you. Also, if you REALLY wanna mimic what a cat does... half-close your eyes and slowly inch your face towards theirs, and assuming they don't react defensively, continue slowly until you softly touch your hose against its. I've had people say something like "my cat never gets close with strangers!" and it only took me like 5 seconds, just by doing that.

Some cats might see a finger as threatening especially if you're sticking it to its face. I would tuck my fingers and make a fist so they can sniff my knuckles. I also dont put my fist right in front of their face.. keep a distance, if theyre down to check you out, they will lean in to sniff. If not, that's ok!

Tried it in the past, cat swiped and left me with a bleeding finger. But it didnt run away and stayed in the same spot, so i showed the cat the wound it gave me and it gave me a half-angry half-guilty look, like a young boy being scolded for bullying his sibling

When we first got my cat she was very scared of her new home so she would go hide under a bed. I would just lay there with my arm fully extended with my finger out and let her come check me out in her own time. Now she comes running when I get home and meows at me. Just for me, I find it's best to offer back of finger, slightly curled, palm facing down, pointer finger angled out towards them more than the rest. You can make your finger almost similar shape to cats nose. But just for me. It's same as extended finger just relaxed instead.. just feels bit more subdued to me. Meeting cats is fun 🥰

I actually draw circles wiggling 1 finger and most cats come to investigate then you can stop long enough for their sniff or if you are on the same level you can pretend to sniff them too and sometimes if you are lucky they touch their nose to yours. Note they only do this once per visit. You need to leave if you want another but you can always get 1 per visit if they know you.

This is actually effective for most land based mammals and may even work for the aquatic ones. If you want to befriens a cat, dog, fox, bear, aardvark, first ensure its not hostile, then present a limb in a none threatening manner while reducing your stature. Your height is naturally intimidating as looking up exposes your throat. Reducing your stature give the visual indicator that you are not a threat in this moment. The sniff makes you familiar, is a rudimentary health check, and can detect bloodlust if its strong enough. It's important to understand their social cues and not commit a faux pas. Befriending gorillas by looking them lovingly in the eye is ill-advised, for example. Cats aren't quite as averse to eye contact, but do appreciate a long blink to display comfort and trust. With dogs, you're better off with gorilla tactics. They don't like being stared down, but can be trained for it. They are very receptive to affection

Important note: Let them sniff your finger/hand, but do *not* boop the nose. Touching the nose is a gesture of deep affection to a loved one, similar to a kiss. You wouldn't like it if a random stranger came up to you and just planted a kiss on your lips. Neither would cats.

The sad thing about too many people, and including those who are around cats, is that they don't pay attention to how cats communicate (among other things), and miss opportunities to earn their respect. I've offered my finger for cats to smell for at least a couple of decades now, and they automatically receive the gesture as a sign of respect and reciprocate. You must be quiet to learn the languages of other creatures.

Obviously they like it much more when you touch them after they have given consent instead of always just getting touched out of nowhere. Doesn't have to be a finger but just approach your hand to them. And their body language will tell you rather they want strokes or not. If they present a spot to you, they're even asking you to stroke or give scratches.
