Love watching craftsmanship like this. The old school Russian roofers have some vids out. They don't use caulk. They specialize in mechanical seals. I've wondered if the metal they use is formulated for the high amount of bending and pounding used to get the mechanical seal. Great vid.

Great video!!, i would like to add that on initial trials it could be a good idea to put a wood block on the panel (size normally 15 5/8 on 16" panels) between the seams to avoid having the panel change in width when folding the ear dogs to the back, small 1/8 to 1/4 in width change can lead to big problems just in a few continuous panels. Special care needs to be taken with striated panels when bending up, the striations can get crazy a few inches down the bend

That looks bulletproof system but seems to be time consuming. Curious I know you are explaining as you are doing it so lose time there. So how long does it actually take in the field per panel compared to zee metal with tape?

I got roofs all year round in Maine if your interested let me know we can talk! If you have a guy or two it’s a plus! I can teach you on one job and let you do half of a roof yourself with me there on the 2nd then let you do one on your own a small one and be on call for you and if you have any questions after we can send you back a master! This guy here is all talk, this is technically the right way to do it but trust me when I say no metal company does it this way ha. A roof would take years if we did all this unnecessary shit. we have harshhh winters here and nothing I do leaks. Let me know if your serious!

And here's the problem that will continuously erode our trade... Nick I thank you for chiming in here and your thoughts equal that of many in our industry.... It is about knowing where and when to use these details.... I myself agree that A New concept will take longer at first but once you learn it and do more of them it becomes more natural and therefore faster.... Hopefully I've shed a different light on this for you

Your using tri polymer silicone rite? You can do z bar as well it’s far faster. Run ice and water over the z bar and hit the nails or screws with silly. Lock into z bar with silicone inside of the 1” lock. Then beat it tight with rubber mallet. Wish I had photos of the time I did this years ago on the water without leaks.
@asm101
@asm101 Жыл бұрын
Yes z bar works very well on a watershed system but try using z bar on a system that could potentially retain water that thing will leak like a sieve

There was light coming through the left bottom corner, isn't that still a pinhole leak spot or does closing the box up take care of that? I'm seriously trying to learn to do my own house. I was a sheet metal worker but never touched standing seam roof. Why not just hit the inside corners with caulking? Does it look bad? I think the hardest part of this is dealing with roofs that are not square but have no basis for that yet.
@YouTubeRanch
@YouTubeRanch 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, sometimes when soldering downspouts you get a tiny pinhole that lets a tiny bit of water through, a little tap with a hammer and it closes metal up completely. Forever. That's why I asked.
@asm101
@asm101 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is a complete folded detail which means absolutely no pinholes...these details will stand the test of time. Cutting and caulking will eventually fail over time with expansion and contraction and deterioration of the caulking itself

@@asm101 Mine is straight forwards if I can remove a chimney that's not been used in 30 years. Pointless in Fort Lauderdale) Then I only have to go from the Eaves to Ridge, with one step down (where you normally put step singles) when I get to the garage. I watched your one video already on that. I'm guessing this is the last section you want to install (on little garage area), So as Its custom cut to fit the wall right. The house is basically a long ranch bunkhouse like they built in California during the 70's. If you are looking for video ideas maybe a video of how to layout long areas of roof metal on unsquared houses or a basic starting of the layout of the job and why you would do it that way. Contractors are so used to doing things but lots of time it's not obvious to others. Also of one just on tools, you had sheet metal tools that I didn't even know about. I used to collect old ones too. Anyways, Thanks.

I don’t get y you would go thru all the trouble to do that. When u install the panels and keep them a half inch from wall. Mark where your end wall flashing is on the ribs of the panel. Then cut and install z bend with butyl tape on the back of it. It is so quick and it does the same thing. No caulking needed. Once the end wall flashing is riveted in place it will never off

@@asm101 sorry, the bents are round , they should be sharp and precise. I work with SS mostly and there a hammer wont help you, if you work on zinc or ally everything eventually fits, on ss even 0,,2mm makes problems. Take a o,5 or 0,6mm polished SS with protective foil and lets see the result when you double bend and unbend. Also I prefer to do all cuts prior to bending when everything is flat. Look at ukv by Schechtl and you will bend all bends
