Good video as always, Brendon! I do have to differ with you on one thing, though: how to clean CDs. It's always best to wipe a CD straight out from the hub, not in a circular motion. If there ever happens to be any unseen dust or grit on what you're wiping with, radial scratches are always much easier for the laser to deal with than circular scratches - the more data in-sequence that is hard for it to read, the greater the chances for mistracking and skipping. One thing about digi-sleeves that I've found useful: after first opening it, I always keep the disc in its pocket with its label side on the same side as the sleeve's front cover. That way, next time I take the CD out, I do so on my bed or desk, with the digi-sleeve facing cover side down, and holding the pocket at an angle while I squeeze so the disc slips out, with my other hand ready to "catch" it by its label side, so that I avoid touching the playing surface. That also helps keep the disc's playing side from rubbing against the inside of the sleeve, cutting down on scratching risk.

Hello Brendon! I appreciate you taking the time to show the viewers some useful tips! Unless it's a jewel case, I never put cds back in their original cases. To avoid scratches, I buy packs of 50 slim cd cases. I insert the cd and simply have it next to the original case/sleeve on the shelf or storage box. I'm very careful when removing cds, but have found scratches on brand new cds even after carefully removing for the first time. Maybe the scratches are occurring at the factory during production. Also, I stream while driving now, but for many years the cd multi disc changer in my car did contribute to many scratches. I never took cd cases out of the house, but I did transport cds using case logic portable zippered cases that could hold various amounts of cds. The longevity and portability of cds with proper care goes a long way compared to other formats!!! Thanks, Rick

I totally agree with you that I never put any CD back to the case unless it is a jewel case. I do the same with boxed sets too. In fact, I go all out making similar designs that I can find on the internet and make covers (front/back) if necessary. I think while CD boxes look great, when you want to play a CD, you seldom open a box and play something from it. Once the cds are placed in a jewel case, that is very convenient. You can get 4-in-1 or double cd cases on the internet easily.

I am just getting back into CDs and I had a bad habit as a teen that was one of the reasons I was initially really excited at the advent of the ipod. Sometimes sure, I'd listen to an album front to back. But many times I had these custom playlists in my head with a certain theme. I didn't have a burner or patience. What I'd do is lay the CD's out, out of their case, data side up, on my bed, so like a private DJ I could listen to the first track I wanted, then quickly switch up to the next track on a totally different CD. It was a lot of fun but likely not very healthy for my collection.

Great video! There is another issue with jewel cases: The right side of the door differs from case to case. There are 2 vertical knobs that hold the front cover or booklet, which in other cases are 2 small round knobs or 2 spikes vertical to the pages of the booklet. In the second and even worse in the third case, they hurt the booklet, and often, at least I do, replace the cases. I hope I described it correctly, ha!ha! thank you for your patience!

So that's what I've done in those rare cases one of my CDs have been filthy. It has worked when it comes to getting really dirty CDs to sound a little better, I suppose, but I will now try a more careful approach following the tracks and all that. Have you ever used one drop of dish soap, rubbing it over the record to then rinse it and leave it to air dry? That was an interesting tip I just got from another channel here. Haven't tried it yet though.

No just rubbing alcohol. Soap will leave a residue if not really cleaned which causes more wiping and not what you want to do. Alcohol evaporates on its own and doesn’t leave any residue.

So you don’t open and play them? Regarding your question, it depends on how tightly the plastic is sealed but yes, liquid could get inside. So if it’s a cardboard case that’s an issue. But also the jewel case ones on the spine, they can let the moisture in their. If you continue to wipe them down make sure the cloth is only damp with very little liquid so hopefully none with get in where they plastic is sealed at.

Don’t know why that would be. But I have noticed on some CD’s that are cheaper manufactured or are really just high quality burns, some CD players don’t always read them as well and they can skip on one player and not another. Little critisism, sorry :) clean always from center to the edge. Not circular motion! Its better to have a small scratch across the disc than circular scratch. Digital error correction has far less job. Another thing, There are no "grooves", its a smooth coating layer. -I would not use alcohol on it. A little soap and water. Great channel! I just wanted to point out these notions.

Circular as around the disc like a record, not in little circles in one spot. As you point out, it’s a smooth coating, you’re right, and as such direction of cleaning doesn’t matter. I’ve heard it both ways and been caring for my discs for 32 years and never had a problem. Also alcohol is far better than soap and water. Soap has dyes and perfumes, and water from a tap is definitely not pure. Whereas alcohol is a singular element and evaporates not leaving any residue behind. Anyway, like you, these are just my notions.

Starting to sound like direction doesn’t matter. Like you, I’ve always (first bought CDs in 1985) cleaned from the center to the edge, as have a few other commenters. But as Brendon has been fine with circular cleaning, it sounds like both work.

@@BrendonSnyder Hi Brendon and John, I just use distilled water and a soft cloth to clean fingerprints. That also often works for cleaning out the small scratches and this allows the CD to play. Nevertheless, I do occasionally pick up used CDs with small surface scratches that surorisingly make the CD skip and there is no cleaning technique that helps fix such situation.

Hi Brendon, I have a question what kind of CDs are on the shelf behind you in your videos. SINCERELY. Roger

That’s my top 800. I change them out all the time to whatever I’m currently into and also keep classics like AC/DC, Aerosmith, Journey, and ZZ Top. This way it makes it easy to grab things. I’ve got over 9,000 CDs and did a video overview if you’re interested, see link kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXTXeK1sabh-qbs

When I bought my Rubber Soul cd the first thing I did was accidentally rip the booklet.

Ahhh….hate it when that happens. I had a deluxe reissue of Kiss Love Gun and it came with a Love Gun magnet. Except the magnet was fairly thin and when I tried to punch it out from some surrounding material it tore. I was so bummed and kicking myself for not being more gentle. I eventually replaced it when I found a decent used copy.

When I get a new CD I'll rip it onto my pen drive so when I want to listen to it again it's right there in front of me. The only time I'll play a CD is when I go for a drive in the wife's car and I'll take a couple with me as her car doesn't have USB

Awww....but you’re missing all the fun with the packaging! I love holding the album in my hand while listening.

i will never trust Cardboard Cases, so i put the discs on those binders for cds
@michaelperillo66163 жыл бұрын
The reason I do that is because I don't want the CD to fall out.

If the tape is on the printed side of the disc, then you might ok. But the tape could peel off the silver part of the disc with the digital info and ruin it from performing so be careful and don’t use a very sticky tape.

Never go in a circular motion when you clean a CD!
@BrendonSnyder5 ай бұрын
There are no grooves on a CD so it doesn’t matter the direction.

@@BrendonSnyderWhen it comes to reading the CD a scratch from going circular motion is much worse than one going from middle to the edge.
