That’s great how you’re able to fit all that music listening into your daily life. I’m always trying to figure out ways to listen to my music each and every day. I also happen to be a big movie buff and an avid reader, so it’s often a balancing act trying to give equal weight to my different passions and interests. There’s only so many hours in a day, right.
@BrendonSnyder

I also only sleep 6 hrs a night so that adds a couple extra hours that some people don’t have if they sleep the standard 8 hrs. And I also enjoy reading but again I overlap and listen while reading too. But still as you say, there are only so many hours in a day but perhaps that helps keep the activity special.

@@BrendonSnyder well my friend their is quite a plethora of companies out there and it is a bit daunting to choose from. Are you more of an outward listener or are you a headphone guy? Anyhow, for CDs I’d go with the Marantz 6006 cd transport. gibbyselectronicsupermarket.ca/product/marantz-cd6006-b-stock/?gclid=CjwKCAiAwrf-BRA9EiwAUWwKXrHufGZ26CyvIoZqzUMUxZLogPARPjPkhDMzfBtUt1dX-2zHp614XBoCLjkQAvD_BwE For what you get performance wise to cost ratio is outstanding. For bookshelf speakers I’d go with KEF. LS 50’s. www.crutchfield.com/S-DUXjEi6Iv4A/p_991LS50/KEF-LS50-High-Gloss-Piano-Black.html?XVINQ=DST&XVVER=5IB&awcp=&awcr=386414900305&awdv=m&awkw=&awmt=b&awnw=g&awug=9001102&gclid=CjwKCAiAwrf-BRA9EiwAUWwKXlkQH6fIwBdrxoOr_YKmD5W5o1V0VHqunlLCu0g1OOqR4oFxLjcf6RoC-_0QAvD_BwE. Cool video. Thanks for sharing. Music is also a lifelong passion for me. Having two older brothers really fed that passion. I would go into their room when they were away to check out their collections. I’d start with the most interesting covers. When I see my brothers today we almost always talk about music after the normal family formalities:).

I think so many of us got turned on to what we listen to by older siblings. I’m the same way. I was drawn to my brother’s Quiet Riot Metal Health and Twisted Sister Stay Hungry album covers first and then stayed for the music. In the late 80’s and early 80’s before the internet took off, I would base a lot of my decision on an album by simply what their album cover looked like. If I knew one song by each band and only could afford one album, the one with the best album cover for bought!

I have the Bose cans in your video & then tried the Sony XM3 & was blown away by the superior sound & noise cancelling. I still have both but rarely use the Bose set, don't get me wrong they sound fine but the Sony pair are superior on both fronts. I have a seperates system, tower speaker's, a cambridge dac & ifi zen 2 to use bluetooth with my system & it sounds great. I have a slight addiction to headphones with many open, semi open, closed, wireless & in ears. When it comes to music you can never have enough options. Very interesting video, I've been enjoying some of your videos. Man we similar tastes, I have most of the box sets you showed in that video. My collection is small compared to yours, around 3000 CDs, but even that amount gets hard to store. I do rip my CDs to FLAC files, I have a Sony Hi-Res DAP and a 1 TB SD card so I have a decent amount of music with me at all times. I'm a wired headphone guy, I have a pair of balanced Sennheiser HD 660S phones and a balanced pair of Sennheiser HD 700, which I only use with my Pono music player. Very interesting and impressive! My collection is much smaller, at about 560 CDs, 140 LPs, 5 or 6 CD box sets, and a few 45s and 7 or 8 cassettes. All of it has been listened to and will be again at some point in time. A small number of them are terrible and I have them as curiosities, but even those will be listened to eventually just for laughs, at least some of it if not the entire disc. I can't even imagine trying to rotate through a collection of 9000! If someone gave me the storage space and said "Select 8300 more and they are yours for free" I would have a hard time selecting that many! I would need a reference book of albums to do it, without duplicating anything. Right now I have a few duplicates but not many, like certain titles I have in both mono and stereo.

It’s taken me 31 years of collecting to get to where I am having 9000+. Also it helped that when I was growing up in worked in record stores and then for the last 17 years I worked next door to a record store so everyday at lunch I’d be in there seeing what they got in. Sometimes I bought CDs daily. But I also find lots of this by researching my favorite bands and reading music news websites to find out about the latest projects and releases. So that’s part of how I got there.

Awesome. I have similar gear. A couple of years I bought a streamer which connects to my hi fi. Streams radio, Apple Music, Qobuz etc. BUT you can bolt in a couple of hard drives. This means I have archived all my cd collection. Don’t try it! You’ll be 103 before you archive all yours. 🤣 But also downloading hi res albums for streamer to play is fun! Although I not sure Poison’s ‘Look what the cat dragged In’ justified a hi res release!

Love it. I also have the Denon CD shelf system. It’s great. Question: beyond playing physical CD’s and streaming from Apple, wondering if you have any thoughts/advice on storing/daily playing of digital music (mp3, etc) that I’ve ripped from CD’s or downloaded? I can only fit so much on my phone for Bluetooth playing when out walking etc. I have most of my MP3’s sitting on an external hard drive at home but obviously you can’t carry around a hard drive and plug headphones into it haha so I’m constantly adding/removing albums from my phone from hard drive based on what I might want to play while I’m out in the world. Wondering how/if you deal with something like that?

Hi Brent & Rich. Just thought I'd comment because I do keep track of what I listen to. I've got 6,300+ CDs and about two-thirds of them are classical music (the rest are rock, folk, world, etc.) and in classical music, they can issue very large box sets; I have one box that contains 200 CDs. Anyway, it's easy to listen and re-listen to my favorites without exploring the lesser known. If the boxed sets are small (5 to 20 CDs) I'll just stick a piece of paper inside the box and write down when I listen to each CD or piece. If it's larger and I want to do more formal review of the music, I create a purpose-built list that inc. release dates. I did that last year with a 47-CD box set of all Bob Dylan's studio albums (up to "Tempest") and some of his live ones because I found myself just going back to the same 10 CDs or so from Dylan's earlier years and ignoring his later stuff. Did the same when I bought a set of all Joseph Haydn's symphonies (106 of them).

Very interesting post. I'm looking to pick up a new set of headphones myself. I've been looking at JBL but the only issue I had was that they don't really encompass my entire ear (I also have large ears). They sound good but I find that even though they're noise cancelling a little bit of noise does come in just because it's not a great fit over my ears. The guy in the store said the Bose are the best of the best. Here in Canada I'm looking at close to $500 for them, the JBL are $300.

For the longest time, I had used an Aiwa AV-D30 with a pair of Pioneer 3 way tower speakers. About 5 years ago, I found a pair of Fisher 3 ways that are pretty close to what I bought when I was in high school. My Aiwa, after roughly 25 years of use died on me earlier in the year. I have since replaced it with a Fisher RS-914A. I only have about a third of the albums that you have. Music was and is still my first love. I also have a passion for collecting horror films. My blu-rays I have on a shelf. Music, I had put my entire collection on my computer in flac (lossless) format. My cds are currently stored in 32qt Sterelite stackable gasket totes. Each tote can hold roughly 140 cds. What I used to do is run my computer's audio out into my stereo system. That would still be my preference, but my pc is in another room now. I use it primarily for whenever I get in the mood to either playing or recording my own music. I'm not great but I do have a few compositions I'm proud of. In any case, currently, I use a usb stick to put some music on and play through my blu-ray player. I also have a micro-SD card in my phone and keep some selections stored on it as well.

Seems like that would take an extremely long time and hard to tote around. I have at least 3x more CDs than vinyl and lots of overlap where I have albums in both formats. Of course vinyl is harder to make portable even within the rooms of my house than CDs or lossless digital files. I never find the time however to digitize everything… your thoughts?

I think I have the same Denon system with the ejecting tray. However, lately it has been having trouble reading discs. Upon inserting one, it makes a high pitched noise and eventually reads the disc and shows the track and time info, but when I go to play it, it spins very fast and does not play. If I open and close the tray a few times it can work, but most of the time it doesn't and I don't know what does make it eventually work. Have you experienced this?

@BrendonSnyder 3 жыл бұрын
I have not experienced that. But I have experienced the cd tray ejecting on it’s own instead of reading the disc. Like you if I open and close it a couple times it will work. Haha! I knew someone would have a question about this as soon as I mentioned it. Really it’s whatever I’m in the mood for. But since the water is running which means a lot of white noise, heavy Metal & thrash usually get lost in the sounds of the water, so I’ll go for more classic rock & straight rock. Things will less beats to them. That way it counters the rustling water sounds and fills in between it.

I remember that some time ago I asked you on one of your video's if you listened to all of the CDs you have. You didn't answer then and I know why - I haven't seen this video before. I am impressed with how often you listen to music, but I think that when you listen to it in such large amounts a day, it must be very hard to find your favorite albums, favorite artists because it is hard to remember it all. I have a large collection of CDs myself but at one point I told myself that I had to chill out. It was too much. Way too much.

Hi Kamil, I’m glad you found the video. But I must have missed your question because I try to reply to everyone and even in this case I would have sent a link to the video. I do have plenty of favorite albums despite all that I listen to. What like the availability of it all when ever I want it I have it.

I'm probably around your age. In the mid 70s until the mid 80's, I had a limited record collection. I bought some cassettes around 86-88. In the late 80's, I started collecting cds and really started to build my music collection. My interest in vinyl came back around 2008. I didn't have any interest in downloading (2011) or streaming (2015) until very late. Anyway, there was a time when I wanted to discover new music and new bands. Now I feel that I just want to dig deeper into the bands and music that I loved growing up. I listen to mostly rock from the late 60's into the 90's and beyond. I do like certain artists outside that genre. Do you continue to seek new music or groups? Or do you mostly enjoy the music you are familiar with? Also, what was your exposure to the different mediums over time?

I’m 44....but probably look older 😞 anyway it does sound like we listen to similar bands and I go back to the late 60’s for The Doors, into the 70’s for Yes, Rush, Aerosmith, AC/DC, to the 80’s for all the metal and hair bands, into the 90’s for alternative and grunge. I mostly stick with the bands I know and love however there are some bands that do the classic sound of the bands I like and so I search these new bands out because it’s like finding a lost album by my favorite band.

My ex used to bitch if I barely had it on and it wouldn't even be loud so I'd either put on headphones or turn it off. We've been split for the past 6 years and now I can listen to them without the bitching. I will never put up with a woman who bitches and goes on. And I mean never I put up with it for almost 20 years

Brendon, the D-M41? How’s the sound quality as far as depth and detail? Meaning, can you pick out the instrumental nuances? Also, how’s the bass output? I don’t trust online opinions because a lot of those are people that are paid to do that or it’s A.I.
@BrendonSnyder

Personally I love the Denon stereos. It’s a big difference in sound quality from your average system. And I can hear the nuances of each instrument. Of course some of that comes down to the quality of recording too. Bass wise it’s perfect for me and my likes. I’m not a big bass person but I like to hear the bottom end clearly and distinctly and Denon does that for me. This is my 3rd Demon, so I keep going back. Hopefully that means something.
