GENRE-BLENDING: the art of combining two or more genres to create a truly unique story. This concept sounds pretty awesome on paper, but when you start writing a story like this… it can raise a lot of questions. How do you combine two different genres and make it feel natural? Will you still appeal to a target audience? How should you describe this new genre? Those are just a few of the questions Kate and Abbie will tackle in today’s podcast.

I'm writing a book with lots of genres right now(sci-fi, romance, mystery, fantasy), and I focus on my characters more than genre blending. This video is very informative. Thank You!

Love your positive vibe; comment about 1,000 true fans, so true. My romance/sci-fi story has a wormhole transporter in it, which is essential to the entire story. Thank you beautiful ladies! You’re the best!

I was ones told you can't wright about a massive mansion that is a city inside with millions of very close friends that is not about a controlling person like Jim Jones but who care's that's what I'm writing a story about that because it's making me happy

Self-pubbing my debut this year. So hard to peg genre for classification/marketing. And finding the right blend of title, cover, blurb, and tagline to properly represent it!

And, as always, thank you for the validation. I am currently dealing with this very thing. In my WIP I am mixing a few different things together and I’m constantly afraid that it will come across as disjointed but at the same time, the elements I’m mixing together are the very things I wish I could find on a bookshelf... so I guess I’m just gonna go for it lol

"People like something that's different than every other thing they've seen before." I totally agree! Isn't that the whole point of Pixar! I mean, they're always making these really great movies that are so unique when it comes to concept/premise stuff! That (one of the many reasons) why I love them!

I think the tagline for the sci-fi horror story I'm writing would be, "We are no longer at the top of the food chain.".

Though I’m not a huge fan of the word “rabid”, as it tends to conjure up some unsightly imagery, your description of Dr. Who fans is not wrong lol

I kinda like the mixing of fantasy and scifi used to love reading the shadow runner series where humans split off into evolutionary paths and become elves, dwarfs, and trolls in a future where the races begin to take sides. It was much more interesting then hobbits in a forest or a farm boy makes friends with a dragon. I kinda want to see more of that. I miss it. Or fantasy horror is always good too

The shadow runner series did pretty good but I've seen other series like the MTV something Chronicles was awful no world building at all unless they stumbled across some ruins you wouldnt even know it takes place in the future and bright on Netflix had world building but no plot and barely any character development. I think those are two major pit falls in blending genres

I'm not sure whether I want to blend steampunk with fantasy because I want there to be airships in my book as a means of travel as they can use it for both land and sea, I've come up with some sort of compromise by making the source of power to the airships some sort of crystal like mythril in the lord of the rings series the only hard part is coming up with a name for it nobody has though of yet. Either that or just make it a full magic system altogether, I'm not sure what to do. Update: I'm planning on making a dystopian fantasy I just think it goes better with my book series going forward.
