Stephen Bauman is a master. Really recommend subscribing to his channel. He's the rare artist who has great intellectual insight, historical knowledge, and superb drawing/painting skills. One of his best recommendations was the book *Art & Fear* Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking. For all the many angst-filled dread, depression, and lack of motivation for making art videos on KZbin, it is nothing like this book which offers solutions or methods in an intelligent, respectful, and emotional way.

I think the most impressive thing about Stephen is his ability to explain and teach(I think the Proko crew in general does a phenomenal job picking artist who can do this). Stephen though has a very specific way he does it and it makes me feel like he was raised by teachers haha. The transfer of skills and knowledge to a teachable thing is not easy.

One of the best instructional videos on drawing faces I have ever seen, looking at the bigger picture is important (no pun intended). This is the way I used to draw before I was trying to learn any of the methods. I never really liked them because they don't feel natural and it was easy for me to get lost in construction of lines. I could spend hours tweaking little lines just to be dissappointed with the result.

I so wished I had this tutorial and more in the 1970's. I did great back then but lacked visual information. Books lacked such until atelier training became popular. I did not realized I could not draw well until the 1990's !!!

Starting to draw an eye, nose, and mouth are beginners' way, but he establishes the structure first. The front, side, and top are nicely established first, then it's easier to position the eyes, nose, and mouth.

I think I really need the head muscles, and your tutorial on body muscles was a great help, but we need the head muscles as well, because mimeographing a portrait of a figure requires more than just constructing the form of the luminescence, and more than just the skill of sketching. You can create a separate paid project for this purpose

For different cases you use different parts of systems. Depends on your case and your skills and weaknesses. Blocking, loomis, azaros head, triangles etc. For example you have angled head. You need 1. Perspective in the form of cube to get the abgles correct 2. Blockin of shapes and patterns according the loomis boxes 3. You need to execute based in azaros head or carving process 4. You need to start wit larger shapes and shapes that are simple to correct 5. You need to use loose sketching to get things in the best way possible 6. You need to apply light pressure while you drawing Etc etc etc There is no one method. It is always amalgamation of different elements from all the methods you can get your hands on. I always thought it is obvious. But not for you

Could you do a video explaining how "measuring" is done? I see so many instructors showing and talking about measuring and the way they do it is like they assume the student already understands the basics of it. I feel like you’ll want to at least roughly know how to make the Loomis head (or something similar) in different angles so that you have that “construction” fundamentals to work off of. The key is that this is a ‘hybrid’ method. It builds off of the construction method and how that can be adapted for a more visual/intuitive method. Without the construction fundamentals, it becomes difficult to build the structures of your drawing after you have the rough outlines in.

@@AlfredEiji On the other hand without correct proportions it is almost impossible to get the drawing to look right even if you know the structure well. Unless you have a massive mental library careful analysis (angles,plumb lines, negative shapes, size ratios too but eyes are not good at measuring those so angles are usually more accurate) help keep the proportions in check. You can draw the whole face this way without any structural knowledge, but it gets very tiring and you need to be good at observation to pull it off. I feel like learning both seperatly then combining them is the most effective aproach. Imo relying on a construction method gets things looking stiff and slows down progression, and should only be used to get an idea of the general shape. This is only from my personal experience though so take it with a grain of salt

Proko and Bauman are outstanding. But the price, $250, for a head drawing block in course is ridiculous when the content can be found for nearly free with a couple of books and the free content available online. This is not some new groundbreaking approach to drawing the head. It is standard fare for tens of thousands of artists over hundreds of years. Proko is of course free to charge what the market will bear, but over a few years of online art education, I’ve learned how dumb it is so spend this much money on a single course like this to learn one concept. Artists selling courses want to make as much as they can. Goes without saying and nothing wrong with that. And few to none are getting rich from it. They want maximum benefit for their time but we consumers want maximum benefit for our money. Art education consumers need to try to hold the line and push back to get value for cost in balance. My advice: don’t spend this kind of money on a course with this limited of a scope of content. Again, not saying it’s not great content, just overpriced. And the cost of this course particularly so IMO.
