How to blur background in Portrait mode Photography for beginner nikon coolpix B700 P900 Tutorial

So when I wanna take a portrait photo of my friend, I'll tell him to stand MILES away from me and zoom to him? No. I've been using nikon p900, and I can never get a shallow depth of field (blurred background), or a good lightning in any mode and I don't know what I'm getting wrong

Even my coolpix L810 takes medium portraits with zoom, despite its old age and low quality. Some complain that coolpix portraits are not good, but i guess it will be nice if they do it with zoom.

both are zoom camera .if you need zoom you can buy .But both cameras sensor are small .picture quality average.if you compere DSLR . NIKON B700 V P900 . Nikon p900 best.
