I'm going to take what I've learned in your videos about miniature trees and apply it to the care of the big maple that I care for in my front yard. Thank you!

I have a cryptomeria japonica tansu in a nursery container and I’m gonna transfer it to a bonsai dish I was told Springtime is the best. What month can I do the thinning/branch removal or reduction? I live in Long Island, New York Thanks
@mikbonsai3 жыл бұрын
Do the repotting in the spring and allow a few months for the roots to reestablish and heal from repotting. The other work should be done at least after three months of repotting.

Very good tips. I live in East Coast Ireland. May I ask please...will my Bonsai do better in my conservatory...or outside?
@mikbonsai8 жыл бұрын
If the trees are out door trees, then they need to be outdoor. In harsh winter conditions, some prefer to be in a slightly sheltered position from the cold winds. If you have indoor trees, they can be taken out doors during the summer months and brought back indoors, in your case the Conservatory, in September/October time before the temperatures drop below say 12 C.

This was sold as a Japanese Cedar. Can you guys please take a look at this tree ? and give some feedback as to what it is. I am told it is not Japanese Cedar. Even if you see that someone has named it as you would, I would appreciate your comment. The name a majority of you give will be the one in the title after I re edit it. Many thanks and look forward to your feed back.

It looks to me like a Cryptomeria (more commonly known as Japanese cedar, so I don't think that that was inaccurate).

Try vinegar, full strength, with a tooth brush to remove moss. Works like a charm and will not hurt the tree.
@mikbonsai10 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I use an old toothbrush and water, it did remove the moss.

I find your videos very helpful. It would be more helpful if you could find a way to increase the sound quality of your video.

There are different strain of cryptomeria. There is the Cushion head and the tenzan and some others. It probably is a cryptomeria just not sure Wich kind.

Dave Reschke Thanks Dave, you are one of the few who has nailed it. Not having owned one previously, it took a while for me to properly identify it as a Cryptomeria. Thanks for taking the time to watch and your feed back.

I would have guessed C Japonica, maybe Bandai Sugi. I have one, and the foliage looks similar.
@mikbonsai10 жыл бұрын
Thank you Roger, I have looked at your suggestion and I think it is Cryptomeria japonica 'Bandai-sugi'. Since making and posting this video, I had managed to narrow it down to Cryptomeria. Your feed back is very much appreciated.

And they all have slightly different foliage.

Any tree kept as a bonsai is neglect. These trees are related to giant Sequoia's. They are supposed to be the kings of the forest. They need soil, they should be taller than houses. Very sad to see what could be such an important carbon store kept in this way. Destined to die slowly.
@mikbonsai7 жыл бұрын
Not die slowly. The owner died and I am now looking after it. Although I bought it, I regard my self as the care taker of the tree as I will be long gone and the tree will live on for generations. After me others will take over the caretaker role. In my opinion no one owns these trees we are care takers. It would be helpful if you learnt about bonsai as well in addition to the plant work you are doing and join in to look after these wonderful little trees. Thank you for visiting y channel, watching and commenting.

Dude, I don't know what's your beef with bonsai, but there are not fewer huge Cryptomerias in the forest because one is out there in a pot. Cryptomerias aren't even endemic to the UK, so really you should be applauding OP for improving his local biodiversity. Reasoning that it's "sad" or "neglect" to keep a tree as a bonsai, i.e. in circumstances other than its natural habitat, is a prime example of a naturalistic fallacy: by which one assumes that the way something occurs in nature is necessarily superior to any alternative. Furthermore, trees kept as bonsai frequently outlive their "in the wild" brethren because they are *better* cared for. Guess what would have most likely happened to this tree had he been grown in a forest: most seedlings die before they reach the canopy because of competition for light or nutrients from other trees right next to them.
