I lived for a number of years in Williamsburg, VA and use to enjoy visiting Colonial Williamsburg and especially the book binder shop. Was fascinated watching and listening to the craftsmen. One day, after the crowd had walked through, I had a chance to chat with the artist. Bottom line, he appreciated my enthusiasm and agreed to make a book for me. Took him several weeks but it was so worth the wait. The edges have gold gilding and the leather cover has a nice pattern he and I designed. Beautiful work of art. Your video brought back fond memories.

Outstanding Lin, what a great topic to do. You missed the opportunity to create your own printers mark though. This subject is dear to my heart after the recently completed renovation of the Carnegie library in Snohomish included the details of the original printers marks on the front facade. Standing in front of the Carnegie Library built in 1910 and facing it, the printers marks left to right are: St Albans Press (English), Gerard Leeu (Dutch), Denys Janot (French) and William Caxton (English).

Great now I’ve learned how to put printing techniques in my books ~ didn’t know there was any technology out there to show how us simply folk at home could print on the paper leaving the right size margins where needed ~ dumb dumb me has been manually putting mine in a typewriter ( 🤣 remember them) and typing each page ~ which takes like FOREVER 🤦🏾♀️!! Your a God send!!

Back before the dawn of time, okay 55 years ago or so, while I was in junior high, we had a storm that took the roof off the library and many of the books got damaged. The librarian asked me if I would like to try and repair some of them. He got the basic tools and a book on book repair. It was fun, interesting, and useful. The public library then hired me to repair their old books which in turned lead two lawyers having me bind their papers together. So for 7 years I had a wonderful little business through junior high, high school, and community college. I haven't thought about it for years. Thanks for encouraging the retention of this art and for bringing back those wonderful memories.

Lovely inspirational videos on the Craft of Book Binding! Now I will make up actual books instead of loose-leaf notebooks with printer paper with hole punched in them! Brilliant! ...and thank you!

Word has a setting under paper setting that makes it a booklet. You can tell it how many pages per signiture (10 is usual) so 5 sheets of paper when you are counting them out to fold

Definitely want to do this as an artist. Seems like the best way to keep a drawing heavy journal. Very personal. Like a physical extension of your soul. A horcrux!

I have a few books that are a wee bit wavy because this rule was not followed - the makers of cheap paperbacks just don't care!

This is a great video, but I think the thumbnail doesn't do it justice. A better thumb I think would make all the difference getting this video many more views.

One of the issues with the "stark whiteness" here is definitely the typography! The space between the paragraphs is huge, it's no wonder it looks very white and is harder to read, your eyes have to strain more due to the light reflected and jump around more to get to the next line. When typesetting books you want a nice even greyness, if you pretend to look at a distance when looking at the page, or taking of your glasses if you wear some, you want to see a nice evenly gray rectangle. The paper is definitely whiter and it's hard to judge how white it is on screen so it might be problematic but I sort of doubt it since I've read plenty books printed on copy paper. Another contributing factor might be the type of light used while reading, fluorescent is notoriously bad for example.
