This video saved me! 3 weeks ago I bought a base M2 Mac mini and immediately tried to instal Ventura on my Samsung T5 SSD. After the installation I was unable to boot from the external. I tried once more reinstalling the OS but to no avail and gave up on the idea, assuming there was something with the Mac design making it impossible. Fast forward to yesterday when I came across this video and was idly watching it when my error became apparent . . . I was not installing the OS on the physical drive! This tutorial is an object lesson in how to define the task, execute it and check it. The presenter straightforwardly points out that the external will be slightly slower than the built in one and shows us how to, in effect, make our M silicon Macs behave like 2 computers in a single machine. It is particular boon to users whose work takes up a lot of space because he/she can store large data to a large SSD yet leave the production Mac free for everyday tasks or to do the large tasks on the plain Mac then store it immediately on the external. Those working in civil engineering, design and image-heavy jobs will find this tutorial invaluable. All tech tutorials should aspire to this standard.

Would it resolve my crashing problem if I were to run only the OS from the internal drive and everything else from an external? And if so, can you tell me how designate the external drive as the default for everything else?
@BartechTV7 ай бұрын
Hi, when you say crashing, do you mean literally spontaneous kernel panics and shutdowns, or are you seeing a message saying "Your Mac has run out of application memory"? A Mac should never crash just because of memory intensive apps. You can expect a warning message as your internal SSD reaches capacity, and you'll see a message if your Mac runs out of RAM which will ask you to close apps, but it should never just crash. Random shutdowns or crashes sound more like a hardware issue. I sincerely doubt that moving your data to an external drive would have any effect in reducing or eliminating crashes. As a general rule, you should aim to keep about 20% of your internal drive free (so, in your case that would be 100GB) as it helps with wear leveling. As for forcing your Mac to use external storage for everything except the OS, there isn't a system-wide setting for that. It's up to each individual application. For example, in Final Cut Pro, you go to Libraries, Properties, then Storage Locations, and choose where you want render files and caches to be stored. In Lightroom, you store your library on the external drive and set the cache location to the external drive under the performance tab in preferences. If you're experiencing regular crashes on a new Mac that's still under warranty, you should contact Apple. I've had random kernel panics on two occasions with brand new Macs and on both occasions it was a hardware issue that required a new logic board under warranty.

Will this work in Ventura 13.3.1? My M.1 booted from the internal drive will drop access to the external without warning. If I boot from the External permanently, will it stay connected?
@BartechTV Жыл бұрын
What external drive are you using? I used to have frequent random disconnects with my M1 Mac. It was due to the enclosure I was using. When I switched to a different enclosure, the disconnects stopped. Booting from the external drive won't stop the disconnects from happening if they're caused by the enclosure or the cable, you need to have a solid, stable connection if you're going to be using it as a boot drive.

I would like to upgrade my imac 2017 towards an external ssd since the built-in hardrive cannot be replaced without removing the whole screen and opening up the whole thing. However, I do not have the budget for a 1tb ssd. Can i just use a lower capacity external ssd as a boot drive and keep using the internal hardrive as extra storage like on windows? I'm pretty new to the whole mac ecosystem.

Yes, absolutely. Even a 256 gb one will work

Can this method help to sustain the internal SSD of Mac m1?

Any idea if this can be done on one MacBook and then the external drive transferred to another MacBook who’s password is not known? I want to know if I can repurpose a password locked mbpro that would other wise become e waste :(

Which password? MDM lock? iCloud lock? Firmware lock? User account password? If it's just the user account password you can reformat the SSD and create a new account. If it's an MDM lock you can bypass it temporarily by blocking access to Apple's servers in the hosts file. If a Mac is iCloud locked or has a firmware password set, then booting from an external HD would change nothing. It's a brick.

@@BartechTV I believe it is MDM locked. It is a work mbp that had water damage and I fixed. But after erasing the ssd it default to another organizations sign in account. So it seems like the managing organization cannot be removed from the It. So I was wondering if I can take it back and just have an external MacOS drive and still use it never able to use the main ssd
@BartechTV Жыл бұрын
Yes, if it's MDM locked then only the company assigned to manage the device can unenroll it. Using an external SSD doesn't change anything because it's the serial number of the Mac, which is stored on the logic board, that Apple uses to determine if a Mac is MDM enrolled. As soon as you connect to the Internet, macOS sends your Mac's serial number to Apple's servers, and if those servers find that the Mac was previously enrolled in MDM, you'll have to supply the organisation's login credentials. You can bypass the MDM lock by editing the hosts file to block access to Apple's servers and reinstalling macOS Ventura without connecting to the Internet. But this no longer seems to be working with the newest beta version of Sonoma and as soon as you reinstall macOS you'll have to do it all over again.

go with the fastest nvme you can find (tip: samsung) along with a good thunderbolt 4 case and you won't notice a difference between the normal drive and the external one.
