As for the jab forward and move to an angle, Pernell Whitaker used to do this a lot. Watch a few of his fights and you'll see some southpaw magic

Hi. Not a stupid question at all. As an orthodox, I would use my back hand parry to defend an incoming jab from an orthodox. However, if I were a southpaw I would use my lead hand parry to defend an incoming jab from an orthodox boxer. A southpaw will use the lead hand to block and parry more orthodox jabs. They will meet an orthodox much more often than they would meet a fellow southpaw (only 1 in 9 boxers are southpaw). Hope this makes sense. Thanks for the comment by the way.

@connect121 Hey mate. No problem, all comments welcome. I agree on the 45 degrees on the front foot, but I believe there's some flexibility on the back (not that I'm disagreeing.) Check out footage of Cuban Mario Kindelan (one of the best amateurs ever), a lot of the time his back foot is at 45 degrees AWAY from the target, actually pointing backwards! So, there's room for some variety! Thanks for the comment.

Yes, exactly right. Rather than a jab, a long range left hook can often work well over the incoming southpaw jab, it's another option.

Try feinting the jab and turning it into a long range right hook (like a slightly angled jab). Vary it often, confuses them a bit. Also, jab as you move forward and diagonally to your right. This again opens up another angle.

This is the exact technique that a pro boxer at my gym does to me everytime we spar, and I never figured out how he did it! I tried to imitate it but it never worked well, now I understand what I did wrong! thanks for the video!

@marinejackson Check out the videos on the 3 types of left hook (short range, mid range and long range). The mechanics are the same for both southpaw and orthodox, just in reverse. Hope they are of use.

yeah, exactly that's a good counter punch to counter a southpaws jab with because if you time their jab right with a left hook right over it you're going to land the hook.. it would be really hard for them to catch your hook or even roll under it

Check out the Manny Pacquiao analysis article on the site, he deals with this by using some simple but very smart foot movements.

RE: opposing stances, isn't it better to for the lead palm to be rotated inward toward your face and deflect the jab with the non thumb end of your hand. The movement seems alot more energy efficient and leaves you less exposed
@myboxingcoach7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's an inside parry - this parry's the punch to the outside.

I'm orthodox, can i use this technique so as to open up my southpaw opponents for my cross? Being having a hard time with the southpaw cross as it often ends with whoever can connect first with the cross.

@myboxingcoach...i don't want to sound like i am criticising you, but you back foot is too square and should be pointing approx 45 degrees toward your target.. Apart from that factor i really like your videos.

Hi Fran. As a southpaw the main shot I have most trouble with is the orthodox left hook. As I circle right to get outside my opponent's left hook I am vulnerable to the shot. I always keep my right lead high cover the shot, but I find it difficult to execute the roll underneath the left hook quickly enough as I'm moving to my right because my weight is on my front foot. What do you think is the best defensive strategy against the orthodox left hook for a southpaw?

I try and teach our orthodox fighters how to fight southpaws :) we dont really have southpaws in our gym for sparring so I was forced to switch stance one day. For some reason im able to counter punch better on southpaw stance now :o lol I dont spar like a southpaw nomore though.

As Southpaw I use this technique a lot! Parry my opponent's jab and then counter with a jab or a left cross. The problem is though - so do my opponents! I get constantly frustrated that my lead hand gets trapped by my opponent's lead and I can't bring up my hands to block Any suggestions? I know you can feint the jab but are there any counters if they manage to actually trap your hand?

Hi mate, I am a southpaw and use my lead hand to defend their lead hand and feel my defense in this department is good. But their backhand normally comes behind a jab or double jab and my right hand has been too busy defending the jab to defend the straight right with it. other than pivot away to my right or be out of range, is there something you could suggest to defend against this type of attack.

@immortaliserwow No, not rude at all. I've always loved that thing of southpaw v orthodox, it's great fun how us orthodox boxers have that grudging respect for how a real good southpaw works, and show that respect with comedy put downs. One of the joys of boxing! :o) Other thing though, this parry is as important for an orthodox to learn as for a southpaw...for when we meet that 'real good' southpaw!
@gravidoff12 жыл бұрын
this will probably sound like a stupid question but if this is for southpaws then why are you standing in an orthadox stance?

Hi Fran, thanks for the great video. It's been a while since you made this, but I'm wondering whether it's as effective to turn into my lead-outside parry by pivoting off the lead foot more so than the rear? It feels more natural and intuitive to me as I feel like I can initiate with the jab much faster after that. It feels as if pivoting off the rear allows me to load up a more efficient rear hand straight, but I'm not too sure whether there is any actual, practical difference. Thanks

+DeathstrokeCSW Go with it, it will still be a 'safe' block so there's room to experiment with limited risk.
@CoachAnthonyBoxing7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't risk this against the cross I would use this against a jab the back hand is too powerful to try and parry much safer to slip or step back block
@myboxingcoach7 жыл бұрын
Good point Anthony. Against an incoming backhand from an orthodox to use this I would be telling the boxer to combine it with a push away - that back hand would be far too powerful
@StonedCatmp311 жыл бұрын
Thats why smart southpaws know that, and will try to dodge/block/parry/negate a backhand and come back with a straight left, its either your back hand or his , orthodox vs southpaw
