Anyone who watched this video and didn't understand the content, isn't close enough to shooting sub 80 to understand how to get the most out of it. How can Mark or Coach build a game plan for other people to break 80/70? That's just silly. The best information they can offer is how they go about playing a round, setting up expectations, understanding misses and where they are and understanding how results on the course can be interpreted. Before they tee'd off, notice how they talked about what they might expect to shoot? ie setting reasonable goal and notice on the second hole, how Mark commented on the approach that ended up in the bunker. He was describing his mentality around the fact that he still hit a decent shot/chose the right club in the conditions so took the positive from it instead of beating himself up for the bogey and took away that if he continues to play like that, the round might come to him later. I think a lot of you missed the point of the video entirely and that might just show you're not ready to shoot under 80/70.

This is possibly the best comment ever. You don’t know how happy this makes me. The comments and content on this subject are full of stupid cliches that people just mindlessly lap up. Thank you so much for seeing what this really is. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

@@MarkCrossfield Awesome, thanks for that. I think people expect that videos on KZbin are there to wave a magic wand over their game and all will be fixed! It's one of the hardest and most complex games in the world for a reason. It takes time and effort to improve, not spoon feeding! Great to see you playing Srixon/Cleveland this year. Srixon make great stuff. The Z star ball is the business. Cheers!

Lowest score I ever had was a 68 (-2) at a very prestigious country club in the Bay Area. I was a caddy at the time and just played out of my mind that day. Think I was 16. Never shot in the 60s since. I tend to go for breaking 80, but I’m definitely playing to a 10 handicap right now. For me, I’ll let a bad hole or errant shot get in my head and I lose myself and perspective constantly. Been struggling with that mental side of the game for years. I have the game, it’s just that mental block that keeps me from getting closer to scratch

My list to break 90: - hit twice the practice putts as you did shots on the range warming up - NEVER EVER lose a ball, or get into an unplayable lie (this is usually a decision, choose the shot that YOU KNOW will keep you safe and in play) - completely ignore any peer pressure or advice on the course - ride your strengths all round long; 3ws off the tee, 52 instead of 60, play the fade, rinky from 160, whatever, find what works over and over again for YOU and do it over and over again all round long - make more putts, make putting "that thing that always saves you," that you can always count on - play the tee color that makes you most comfortable on the part 3s - focus of hitting fairways and greens in regulation, not risks or showboating, fairways then greens - use a rangefinder (with slope) to verify every distance, evaluate your results and modify next shots - having a blowup hole is not the end of the world, evaluate what didn't work, adjust back to what you know will work for you - make each round feel easy, smooth swings, use enough club, make putts...repeat over and over

I broke 80 twice this year (first and second time ever) on my par-73 home course. I need to get more consistency of the tee, be sharper in approaches, need more up&downs, need some luck with longer putts and need to make more birdies. Course management: aggressive or defensive? All of this I train on weekly with my pro.

Hi Mark, I have broken 80 before, but never 70. Best round was even Par 74 (handicap 3.9). I feel I might be getting closer though! To consistently score "low" (for an amateur anyway) I feel the key is to stay focused, relaxed, and get the basics right. Of course we need solid short game, a sensible length on our tee shots, and with luck even a few putts to drop. But more importantly, what we need to avoid at all costs is throwing away shots for free, like pushing a drive OOB or duffing an approach into the pond. Being 2 over after 2 isn't an issue as long as we stay cool - but being 7 over after 9 cause of two lost balls might be! Since I have only recently done it, I can say confidently that breaking 80 is in the mind more than the body, once the basics of technique and strategy are dealt with. Greetings from Germany.

I've stayed at Amendoeira Golf Resort 5-6 times last three years, absolutely epic place. So beautiful, calm, excellent courses. Practice facilities are so so good! Faldo is a very difficult course, but a great experience. So beautiful when you're on top of the hills. I prefer O'Connor Jr course as it is a lot easier, but still as much fun and overall such a good course. Then the little 9-hole course you can play under the lights at night is epic with a few beers in hand!

Completely agree that you have to set realistic expectations depending on the conditions. I played off hcp4 today, but my coastal course was blowing 40-50km/h winds. So I accessed at the start that if I could shoot between 78-80 then I’ve done well and less that 78 and I’ve played really well. I ended up shooting a 79. Unfortunately my short game, particularly putting let me down and I should have shot a 75-76, but I’m still happy.

I think this vlog is about breaking 80, listen to what mark and coach are saying. ‚One over on that hole, but happy because I didn’t hit a bad shot and was pin high with my second ˋ I would be saying sh!t another drop shot, go to the next tee and try and smash my ball even further down down the fairway, miss it right and double the next. Mark and coach are saying here, keep cool, a birdie will come if I keep hitting good shots.

Played this course 3 times and last time I played it in June a young pro, who was on starter duties told us that if he wanted a challenging day he plays the Faldo and if he wants a fun day he plays the O'Connor. Having played both I can't disagree. Both stunning courses 👍

It's good to view this one with the "tour school qualifying" video with Dan. I think the perspectives and take homes are similar. But as a few people note below, breaking 80 for many is simply a pipe dream as it requires a level of skill, ball striking etc that is out of reach. Does not mean they cannot maximise their skills and break their own '80.' Just as an aside, I think expectations are a dangerous thing. As Brad Kearns (Tiger's coach way back) said, "never listen to other people's expectations." This was said in context of true or significant learning experiences. Michael Hebron has a lot on this (that would be a person to team up with Mark on the psychology side).

I have been a regular 82/83/84 gross around my local par 72 links course for years, but on one day a couple of years ago, I shot a 1 under 71 gross. It came out of nowhere. I have absolutely no idea why, or how, that happened, and have not been able to come close since. How can you get a 13 or 14 shot swing out of nowhere, without really (seemingly) doing anything different? Most frustrating game on the planet.

I play with many 12-15 handicappers that struggle to break 80. They're always in that 87-82 range and just can't quite get over the hump. Whats the typical mid to high handicapper hole? They hit a decent drive, not great, but playable. They spray their approach shot left or right, or short or long. They chip on, then two putt for a bogey. Or they end up in a bunker for an even worse score. Or they get on the green then end up three putting for bogey. Those are the strokes players can eliminate by actually spending time practicing that part of the game. The normal range routine for most is they grab a bucket of balls, hit them, then go home. There is a short game area at most ranges, and the ones that I go to are always empty. If you can turn 6 of bogeys into pars. A few of those doubles into bogeys, that 86 would be a 79 or less. There are a lot of components in a golf swing that not even a PGA player can execute them on every shot. Chipping and putting is more about feel with less moving parts. Its the simplest part of the game yet many struggle with it.

I'd love to see a video of a 10 handicap, a 12 handicap & a 15 handicap and you coach them through the round. Then you could see how they fare. Your video was great to help with how to manage the course. A 12 handicapper will screw up some shots and then have to recover. I think that would make a great video that a lot of people could relate to with bad drives, flubbed chips and bad putting. Many don't hit the ball as far as you two either which puts a different pressure on your game even if you hit it straight.

This is probably common, but I rarely have time to hit range balls before a round. Therefore not really warmed up, not in the "groove". SO therefore I tack on 2 or 3 strokes on the first half-dozen holes just getting loose.

4th Hole get away with a poor drive. Ball sitting down and try and smash a 3 wood. To where? Into trouble - 60 yards out. Is 70 yards your best number for an approach. If you seriously want to break 80 - this very situation is where you save shots. Work on a key yardage into the hole and then play to it. If you bomb a drive - then look at attacking the hole.

I get what people are saying about there not being “direct coaching points” in this video... i.e he doesn’t actually stop and say “now this is exactly what I’m thinking and I’m going to do precisely this and this is how you do it, do you understand?” But there is a lot of information in this if you watch as a whole... like decisions to push harder on certain holes, or aim for the left of the green in a certain situation, or run the ball up instead of flying it or going for the putt vs playing for the 2 putt etc etc. It’s general advice about game management I think... at least that’s my take. And once you at the level of nearly breakin 70 or 80, you shouldn’t need a lot of coaching- you already have the skills required. It’s more about game management and working your way tactically wound the course using your personal-specific strengths to score and protecting you personal weaknesses so you don’t drop strokes.

Break 80 about 20% of my rounds, only shot level par twice in last 5 years, typically 76 to 78, bad round is 84. My main issue is mental game. I am low HC in my league and so I am always giving strokes and always have a target on my back. You know... I smoked George today...never mind he gave me 2 strokes on multiple holes. Anyway, my mental breakdown is usually triggered by just 1 bad shot. If I don't hit a great recovery shot then I tend to give up on the round, not just the hole, which can easily cost me another bad hole on top of the one I just messed up. I know this is bad but I'm just being honest. My best rounds are always based on average to good shots, rarely a great shot, but also no real dogs. I think my shot tendencies are more like Parfield, but my emotions are closer to Coach. BTW, I have a decent short game, so that is usual my savior, and drives my opponents crazy.

I have enjoyed this series and was looking forward to this as breaking 80 is where I am at, basically might do it a handful of times in a season but probably not off the white tees or in a comp. This seems to be the first break ?? where you have not factored in what the "average golfer" can do. For example coach hit a 9 iron 167yards at 7 minutes in. To the aging and more rotund of us that is a 6 iron. Any reason this was not factored in to break 80?

@@MarkCrossfield I didn't mean to make it about how far he hit a 9 iron more an observation that you were not holding back where you have in all the other break series. Hey Mark and Coach, I have wanted to note this for a while, but this video illustrates the problem nicely so a good time to comment. If you watch the Golfaholics blogs, they superimpose a small circle around the ball as it lands, which makes it much easier to see the results of their shots. I am sure it is an editing burden, but if possible, I ask that you do this as well? Otherwise, it kind of makes your shot tracking unwatchable as most viewers are unable to see the result of the shot. Just a friendly recommendation.

Thank you for the idea. I do think you see the outcome of each shot when we cut forward too. But will keep it in mind

Interesting stuff but how about a "how to break 90" version for the average golfer who just keeps trying, and trying and trying? Happy to volunteer if you need a "test case".

I had not gone below 80 ever until May 2020 when I made a 75 (par 72). What was the secret then? None actually, I just had a good time, not thinking of making shots really. soooo happy!

i totally get the title. listen and watch how they plan their shots and where the best miss would be, and what shots they might be left with. breaking 80 is hard if you just continually pin seek all day.

Hey Mark I love your videos. I want to know what putter you are using in this video, please. Maybe you have done a 'What's In The Bag' recently but I'm not finding it. ... Thank you and I hope you make a lot more videos.

I break 80 several times a year, depending on how bad my putting is, of course. On a course around 6500 yards long. At 7000 yards. I'm hitting three wood into par 4s, so there's that.
