Working back from the green is the most helpful thing I have learned, setting up in a good spot, avoiding trouble, playing to your strengths. I don't hit greens in regulation very often... but having an easy chip so I can be within 10 feet is the best I can do right now and give myself a chance at par. When my 100 yards in shots get more accurate, I know ill see some scores dropping.

Just bought a Smithworks wedge based on curiosity of those x patterns, what a great club. I bought it to close a gap i had in my bag. However, what an implement this is, it really offers great interaction throught the face and just goves me better shots more of the time. Probably going to replace my Jaws Raw lob wedge and sand wedge with these. Thanks for the tips Mark, love the channel.

I play a 43,50,56 in the wedge set up. I see many players who have 4 & 5 wedges who don’t need more than 2! In my opinion you’re better off learning how to hit different shots & trajectories with your P,G,S weapons as well as like you demonstrated with the 9 iron. Try it out, it works!

picking targets to avoid trouble, even with a wedge in hand, is such an immense breakthrough when one starts doing it. It is fascinating to see the stats for the "can't break 80" vs "do break 80" sets of players. I'm much closer to the "do break 80" (and I break 80 about 20% of the time) but on the worse side of it, and I can see how my stats fit right in that gap. The targeting has pretty much got me to the 5 handicap or better level with wedges though and it might be a major factor in the 70s rounds I do shoot.

Great video and bang on as always Mr.C! Historically my wedge game has been one of my stronger suits. Lack of regular play and practice does mean it’s not as sharp as it could be. Currently game Ping Glide 45, 50, 54 & 58 (e-grind). Would like another grind option on the 54 but find the 58 ping eye head is super versatile and like a spade getting out of bunkers!

Very useful thanks. Tend to get too focussed on going for the pin as opposed to looking at the shot more holistically. Also good to know that I’m not alone in occasionally missing a green with a wedge in hand. (Sometimes it can make me feel a bit silly when in reality, and at my level, it apparently not that uncommon!)

I take the PW & AW from the set then into specialist 54 & 60 with 6 degree gaps all the way & works perfectly for gapping

Before the lob, gap, 54, 56, 58, 60 degree wedges existed we had a Pitching wedge and a sand wedge. The sand wedge was used out of bunkers and, rarely, deep rough. The PW was used from every shot, needed for elevation. Either we opened, closed the face. Went up or down the grip/handle. We lowered the handle, raised the handle. Played the ball off the sweet spot, or the toe. It's no wonder golf has slowed down, a golfer needs to consult an app, just to play a shot, that we played by eye!

When I started as a kid my most lofted club was a 9 iron. Granted, it was probably about 48°. I used it for everything under 125yds. I can still pop a ball over a clothesline from 3yds with one.

like the "variations". another way to force it is to take only 6 or so clubs for a round. Forces you to be creative and fun.

The pitching wedges from my now "old" sets had lofts of 49°, 48 at the least, even still I considered them #10 irons really. Never liked the 60° flub wedges, fun yes but it takes a lot of practice, or they can add strokes in a hurry, lol, I know this from experience.

Great video and wedge tips Mark. Short game is such a critical part of the game that can help drop shots. Including putting up to 60% of all amateur shots are less than 100 yards.

Parts of my game rated by handicap, and I'm a 20 handicap who regularly shoots mid-90s, have only broke 90 twice ever ... 88 and 89 haha Driving : 10 hdcp Irons : 15 hdcp Pitching : 25 hdcp Chipping : 25 hdcp Putting : 10 hdcp Essentially 150 and in destroys my game ... regularly landing short of the green which then puts me into a spot where I struggle more than if I were on the green ... yeah ... wedges matter ...

Interesting way you are presenting - most of this has nothing to do with actually hitting the shot, mostly about what club you pull and where you aim - its shot gained, but against your peer group, not a field of tour pros - like it Mark ;)

The problem with wedge fitting is that it so hard to find in most areas. You might find a fitter that understands it, but they likely do not have all the lofts, grinds and shafts, not even for one brand alone.

KZbin creators are really attacking ‘they’ these days. I would like to extend an olive branch to ‘they’ because ‘they’ did in fact tell me all about full wedges. ‘They’ have, generally speaking, been exceptionally informative about all things golf and I have improved significantly….thanks ‘they’

When you putt like me …you have to go at every pin no matter what. Missing the green is no worse than a three putt from 25 ft . Yes , I suck that bad at putting. It keeps me from being a single digit handicap and has me on the verge of giving up the sport.
