Nice video - thanks. Any suggestions for right vs. right grip break when the opponent gets his right lapel grip on me? I understand that I should stop him from getting the grip in the first place, but eventually this one training partner of mine will get that lapel grip and once on I cannot remove it (with one hand). I can take a double lapel grip or grip his right bicep area to keep him out, but if it was a match I would get shido'ed. This training partner is roughly my size, but is physically stronger than me (and about 20 years younger!). Of course I will be trying the grip break from this video later today at training (I don't think I was leaning into my opponent before moving back while using this type of break in the past). My left side techniques are lapel seoi nage and koshi guruma but if you have some advice to attack on the right side after breaking his right lapel grip, that would be greatly appreciated. (my main right side attacks are kouchi gari, uchimata and sasae to my right side). Thanks Travis - please keep posting judo videos.

It’s more important to break the sleeve grip and turn in on the throw. When a right is stuck holding the gi with only the right hand they are very throwable

Great technique! When you create tart space and go in to grab the hand, are you purposely placing your thumb into true palm area? Or just grabbing whatever you can, and twisting off? Trying to see the detail in your grip there. Thank you very much.

Try to image that you are cupping water in your hand you want your thumb right where the water would be sitting. When your opponent is gripping the collar you should be able to get your thumb inside there once you have created the space. That will make twisting the whole hand easy and the grip will just pop off all on its own.

Hey Travis,I would like an opinion From you. I'm not able to train 5 times a week BJJ but I could do 3 bjj and 2 judo. You reckon would be Good to mix them up. Or due to the very different ruleset I should focus on bjj since I'm competing in it? Thank you.

I hope you went ahead with 3 bjj and 2 judo per week. After a few months, your brain will keep it all sorted out. The judo should give you a leg up in competition, no pun intended.
