EDIT: I make a slight error in Q7! I accidentally rank the compounds by Rv value but it should be reversed to give answer B. Tricked by my own question! 😂

hey mate thanks so much for the excellent content. has helped so much. can i just double check on question 7 sorry? - i don't understand how compound D only has 2 chiral compounds? I counted 3, but I wasn't sure what the light 'N' should be counted and if it was attached to the carbon ring.
@jesseosbourne

@@mileswilson2680 Thanks Miles, glad it's helping! Haha I never noticed the 'light N' floating around in there. Must've accidentally been dropped in on the app I was using to build the structures before screengrabbing it. That carbon is supposed to be bare (ie. two H attached). but if it did have an N attached then you'd be right it would be three so you've got the hang of chiral carbon counting anyway! I'll fix this on the notion page now, thanks for catching that one

I was looking for GAMSAT study material and I got so overwhelmed with the amount of information and promises of GAMSAT prep companies and the fearful words they squeeze in between each line they write in their articles trying to persuade students to purchase their extremely expensive courses, then I found your channel just as I was trying to think how I would be able to afford the courses… I can’t thank you enough, I really cannot thank you enough. I can’t wait to go on and watch all of your videos and start to work through the questions!

It is interesting how we have to compare the EDG And EWG to the benzoic acid. I used to think that even though the pka is higher than benzoic acid , it could still be EWG. Also, I have just founded your videos and it is awesome ! Thank you so much for doing this !!

Hey Jesse, I just found your videos today and I have been bingeing :D Great content!! I'll be watching more of your videos. I have a question regarding Q6, I thought the 1-chloro, 1-fluoro cyclohexane was achiral. I can see it being asymmetrical but I thought when viewing from the achiral carbon's perspective the cyclohexane would be two identical functional groups. Can this still be considered as a chiral centre?
@jesseosbourne
@jesseosbourne 3 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, you're absolutely right! Not sure if I might've made a typo in writing the question or just not realised my error. It is symmetrical about carbon one so it is achiral. I'll change the question in the resources to 1-chloro, 2-fluorocyclohexane. Thanks for checking this with me!

These are great videos, you can really see the effort put into them. Just one query about the last question: I was under the impression that because C had the most chiral carbons, it would have the lowest Rv and therefore the highest conversion rate (so the answer would be b). I'm probably missing something so some clarification would be great :,)

Hi Jesse, thanks for uploading and helping us with our prep for the gamma. I’m still a little confused in Question 7. Why would the last 2 benzene compounds only have 3 and 2 chiral centres respectively, and not more? I thought the paths around the ring from other centres aren’t the exact same. Thanks again for ur help 🙏🏻

Hey Jesse, Thanks for the video, Quick question with question 4, I have used a stupid method that leads me to the right answer, but I am unsure if I should apply this to the real GAMSAT. I first counted the amount of carbon in the reagent and compared it to compound X, eliminating answers C and D. And both reagents 1 and 2 are cis and trans isomers of each other, which relate to the question, Hence I decided that the right answer is B.
@jesseosbourne
@jesseosbourne Жыл бұрын
Seems to be a reasonable alternative for this one but just be sure that if you're relying on counting carbons (or atoms) to ensure there is no loss/gain of atoms (effectively conservation of mass), be sure that there aren't any byproducts etc that are not shown in the diagram but are mentioned/described in the stem

Hey Jesse, with regards to Q3A what do you mean by para and meta directions of the molecules? Thank you!
@jesseosbourne
@jesseosbourne 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Zoe, yep so it basically is a naming structure based on the positions of two branches on an organic ring structure. Ortho refers to branches on adjacent carbons (say C1 and C3), meta is when there is a carbon between the two branched carbons (C1 and C3) and para is when the branches are on opposite sides of the ring with two carbons between them (C1 and C4 etc). This is a very small point of nomenclature though and is unlikely to be assumed knowledge in GAMSAT so I wouldn't worry too much about it :)

Is there other videos which you explore how to do the electrocyclisation reaction in q4? I can't really get my head around your technique of looking at the carbons 1 bond away from the double bond.
@jesseosbourne
@jesseosbourne 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think I’ve looked at it in any other videos but don’t worry too much as it isn’t an examinable concept itself but rather an application of general organic pathway analysis (definitely on the tougher end too) I don’t think I mention it in the video, but I’m effectively ‘cutting open’ cyclic bit and counting the carbons from distinguishing features to orient things. In this case those reference points are the double bond and the branches I’ll see if I can put together another sample set on retrocyclisation in the future and come at it from a different angle :)

Q3 is definitely requiring prerequisite knowledge on orth, para and meta, could you explain a bit further on why this was left out. How have you defined what is include as 'crash course necessary' and what would be 'unnecessary' . Are you using the ACER books to determine this?

Hey Jesse, thanks for making these vids. On question 1, you say that para-methyl is an increase of 0.2 (agree), but para-chloro is a decrease of 0.2 (shouldn't this be 0.4 from the 4.2 of benzene?). I could totally be wrong with this. Thanks again.
@jesseosbourne
@jesseosbourne 3 жыл бұрын
Haha whoops! Yep, you’ve absolutely got it right, I must’ve had 4.0 in my head instead of 4.2 when I was explaining the meta chloro bit so good catch! Luckily it doesn’t change the final answer I had quite a few silly slip ups in the earlier videos that I’ve hopefully ironed out now with the newer ones 🙂

Would you recommend using Des O'neill questions for section 3?
@jesseosbourne
@jesseosbourne 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but only after working through all the ACER booklets first. The Des Stuff is good for developing time management and might help in building confidence around the application of scientific principles but is a little less reflective of the ACER stuff as it can be either a little short in reasoning (few steps) and it leans towards technical calculation and prior knowledge. It's best to be very familiar with the ACER stuff first so that you know when to take a Des question seriously vs when to take it as simply practice when it goes a little outside the bounds of expectation from ACER

hey,i did VCE bio+chem last year and physics 1/2 , im sitting the gamsat next march, do you think i'll be fine without learning concepts?
@jesseosbourne
@jesseosbourne 3 жыл бұрын
ACER say that the exam assumes 1st year uni level bio/chem and Year 12 Physics. If you did the VCE I'd say Physics 1/2 should cover most physics questions (most are related to kinematics, forces and simple circuits). There are a few things that are covered beyond this though (wave theory, gravitation, capacitance, field theory). If you're completing bio and chem subjects at uni then this should cover all the relevant content by the end of the year in time for March 2022. If not, then beyond Units 3/4 there are a few extra topics for Chem (further stereochemistry, rate laws, resonance structures) and Bio (all major organ systems if your school only covered one in VCE as they usually do). A sound understanding of these topics help with being able to quickly absorb the stem information and to apply assumptions and conclusions to reason with the problems given but they very rarely ask questions that rely entirely on the memory of scientific fact. I'd recommend doing a set of practice ACER questions if you haven't already to get a good idea of what level is expected Hope this all helps and good luck!

Hi Jesse, Kamal here please guide us on time management as well because it takes time to read the whole big paragraph and sift the information, will you read the whole paragraph first or questions first. Really appreciating your help.
@jesseosbourne
@jesseosbourne 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Kamal, great idea! I can put together a more detailed video but in general I read the stems through and try to summarise what I'm reading in my head as I go to prevent the need to re-read. Tables and graphs, I only look at column headers and axes labels to get a sense of what information each one provides me but I don't analyse them for any kind of relationship if they are complex and instead wait for the questions to guide me on what to look for. In the science section in particular, if there's anything that I'm reading that I'm already familiar with, I usually start skim reading and bouncing between sentence openers to check sift out anything new or unfamiliar. Hope this helps!
