Nice work, and great job showing how dirty that oil is after such a short run time. I would do pretty much the same as you but I would cut with it for 20min then change the oil. My theory is under load the throttle plate opens allowing the engine to take larger gulps of air. With more air in the cylinder the compression stroke forces the rings to seat better. I have never bought a new lawnmower or a new car as I always buy used on the cheap, but I once had a Honda Integra Type-R motor built by some of the best Honda engine builders in America, King Motorsports, the Mugen dealer. I had $9k into that engine with the Mugen manifold. I had to drive the new engine home from Milwaukee for the break in, and I was told by the builder to beat the snot out of it and vary engine speeds and load during the 60min drive home. I was literally told to rev it to the 8700rpm rev limit under full throttle, and then get out of the throttle at 8700rpm to create vacuum to pull the piston rings up after they were force down under load at full throttle. I was also told to change the oil at only 200mi with conventional oil, and again after another 1000mi. Regular 3000mi changes after that.

Thanks for sharing this Eric! My brother would do the same on his cars! 👍
@campbellpaul Жыл бұрын
Thanks a bundle for that information, Eric (I did hear that from a stock car driver decades ago who broke in engines at 12,000rpm). I bet it would help on even a non-ball bearing engine like the Briggs (nobody can touch JB for loyal oil changes). The old OHV Suzuki 4cycle Toros have a chromium compression (top) ring (like NASCAR lol) and a ball bearing on the crank for even better longevity, which is why one broken in properly blew my mind after going 6,000+hrs and still had adequate compression. Full-load break-in for the first 15hrs is what I would whole-heartedly recommend (then just run it however afterwards).
@GarageGear Жыл бұрын
@@campbellpaul good information here Paul! Did not know that about the Suzuki engines! Thank for sharing!
@WisconsinEric Жыл бұрын
@@campbellpaul Hello Paul, I seem to bump into you on all the good small engine videos. Those Suzuki 2-cycles have a chrome plated top piston ring too. In the years since I sold that Type-R engine I have heard another break in theory that seems to make since. It involves heat cycling the engine. The first start run it for only 10-20min after it reaches running temp, then shut it down and allow it to fully cool to ambient temp before running again. Then do it a couple more times. The theory is that the piston expands during warm up and that is when the most wear occurs. Re: NASCAR. In the early 2000's some NASCAR engine builders were using factory Honda Type-R main crankshaft bearings as they were better than the American race bearings. Yes, Honda 4-cyl bearings in full-race domestic V-8's. Sounded crazy then, and still sounds crazy today. The bottom end of the 97-01 Integra Type-R motors were 100% safe to 9,500rpm as they came from the factory. Top end was only good to 9,100 until valve springs and retainers were upgraded. All that and they did not require a tune up until 110,000mi, although it was much safer to change out the timing belt at 70k. I sold mine at 63k and the buyer was shocked to see how much compression it made as I had the compression upped to 11.6:1 from the factory 10.6:1 with head work.
@campbellpaul Жыл бұрын
@@WisconsinEric The connecting rod also expands, thus you should break it in at a slightly higher RPM as to develop a cylinder ridge line higher in the cylinder. Of course, if you exceed the worn ridge line on an older engine by upping the RPM, you can break your ring(s) on it (you know that, though-- I'm just stating it for anyone else who may read this).

I recently bought the lower model Toro recycler mower (21442) which is not the "Smart stow" mower you talk about in this video. Toro actually advertises all of their current mower models as NEVER needing an oil change. A VERY questionable claim to be sure. I used the mower for about 4 hours on the HD 30W oil included with the mower. I changed the oil and it was nowhere near as dirty as the oil in your video after 4 hours of use. After this break-in period I always use full synthetic 10W-30 (an alternative weight oil recommended in the owners manual) motor oil in my lawn equipment. I change the oil at the end of every season. I have a 25 year old John Deere lawn tractor with a Kohler engine that still runs like new.

Thank you for the information. I just added an hour meter to our new Honda HRX217HYA to help track maintenance schedules. I'll probably do a similar break-in oil change after the first use. Hello! From my experience over the years and including with Honda's 160 cc and also B&S etc, I recommend the Amsoil Break In SAE30 or the ZROD 10w30. Then the Small Engine Oil 10w30 or the XL Boosted. Absolute winners in terms of protection against overheating and a smooth start and lower consumption. Fact : with my Honda 2417 tractor I can drive about 40 minutes longer on XL Boosterd compared to using Castol 10w30 or 5w40. By the way, the ZROD works absolutely excellent in the makita four-stroke leaf blowers. Which are sensitive to wrong oil and fuel. Finally for small engines I recommend Aspen Fuel.

A question for you JB. I bought a toro timemaster 2 summers ago with a Briggs engine. It was coming into the fall, so I didn't mow a whole summers worth. I added oil and just started mowing and never changed the oil until next spring. Now after I mow a few times, it always seems like the oil level is low. I run just regular 5w30 oil. It runs great and doesn't blow out any smoke as might if it was burning oil. Could I have messed up the engine by not changing the oil after the breaking period? Another question, should I drain the gas out of either the snowblower or the lawnmower before storing it? I use non ethanal gas. Thanks. Glad to see you made it back from paradise.

Hey Karl! I would start by draining all the oil out of it. Tip it and drain it and let it sit over nite. Get every thing out. Where do you get your non ethanol gas from?
@GarageGear Жыл бұрын
You can usually find it at pumps around town. Search it on google and you’ll see you probably have some nearby thanks for watching

"Not necessary" on the "Just check & add" sounds like they want to sell more over-priced mowers to morons who think internal combustion engines do not need oil changes. Who is in charge of this BS campaign? Bud Light?? 🤣 Keep kicking ass, JB!! Awesome vid as always, my friend. 😎

Briggs’s and Stratton’s initials are BS… 😂 sounds about right for their campaign! Right up there with bud light! Must have the same advisors lol! Appreciate you and the laughs as always Paul! Have a good week my friend!

Hey JB how’s the SlipPlate doing?

There’s still some on the bottom of the Honda but I may try out the spray cans on this mower! We shall see! Any plans for your Sunday?
@js12278 Жыл бұрын
@@GarageGear I’ve ordered a few cans of slip plate. The fluid Film works through the winter but it takes a beating under the deck all mowing season. I’m going to try the slip plate. Sunday is my day to get ready to go back to work😉💰

Don't worry about "breaking in the engine". It will break down soon enough.

Why not use a $5 harbor freight pump to just suck out the oil right into a container?
@GarageGear Жыл бұрын
You could also do that too! Thanks for watching!

No oil change lawnmowers😮Those bits of metal traveling around the engine. That’s why they call it the recycler!

Did you do this with the gas tank full or empty ?
@GarageGear Жыл бұрын
The tank might have had some gas in it. It’s designed to hold the gas in the stow position without leaking if not overfilled
@_PuglieseFamily Жыл бұрын
Great sounds good. That was Amy concern. Should I empty my echo timmer and edger ? Or it’s destined to hold gas in tank as well

@@_PuglieseFamily drain them all out my friend! You don’t want headaches in the spring
@_PuglieseFamily Жыл бұрын
Got it. Is this just to winterize them? Or always drain them when not in use.
@GarageGear Жыл бұрын
@@_PuglieseFamily just when you winterize them is fine. 👍
