I have 37 pairs of Docs. The oldest pair are from a relative and they are over 30 years old. I break them in with Mink Oil or the Dr. Martens Balsam. Mink Oil is more effective. The thing with heating them is of course a problem. But i have done it by myself often. If you nurish the leather right after heating it there should be no problem. Indirect heat is the way to go. Its really effective because the mink oil soaks in so much better. Also i wear thick socks as you do and if there is much pain i put a tape onto the sock. Sometimes multiple layers. (The Tapes which can easily be removed) Im also not afraid to heat the boot and put Balsam or Mink oil on the inside of the back of the boot. Thats also quiet effective. It's a bit messy. Your socks get oily. And you have to avoid putting the mink oil on the insole cause there is a chance the insole separates from the boot when it comes into contact with balsa and oil. I think breaking them in is part of the experience. To know that the shoe is molded to your foot is worth it suffering all the pain. The 30 ´+ years old ones just feel like they are a second skin. So much comfort. Martens nowadays probably don't last that long. But in the end Thailand Docs last long enough to justify the price. Nice video. :-)

Thank you so much for your tips, I hadn't thought of tape to protect the feet from blisters! Glad to hear the mink oil is good too, what type of indirect heat do you recommend? Yes I bet those old docs are almost like wearing slippers! Sad that they are no longer all made in England but its good to know they will still last a good amount of time 🙏 thanks again I really appreciate the tips!

I refused to do any tricks or shortcuts because I didn't want to damage the leather. But after almost a year, they are perfectly molded to my feet and are amazing! I have a pair of the docs 1461 shoes, and I used white bar towels and rolled them up and shoved them in my shoes and let them sit overnight. I, too, used the pad method for the backs of the insides of the heels, and that WORKS. That really works for not getting blisters on the backs of your heels. What a fantastic, best idea ever. I used pantiliners, tho, as they are smaller and easier to cut in half. My only place of pain with my docs, was my right pinky toe got a little smooshed and was painful for about a day and a half, which I solved by simply applying some ointment to my pinky toe and wrapping it in a bandaid for two days. I wore them in my house, every day, and took them off mid-afternoon. Leather type really makes a big difference in ease of breaking them in, I think.

I have a pair of 1460 vonda mono boots. They run a bit big lengthwise, but widthwise, they are perfect. Wearing thicker socks fixes the length, but the biggest problem I have is that the tongue seam in the right boot is tight and digs into my skin. I noticed that you said that is where Dr. Marten's hurt your feet at timestamp 4:03. For me, it's only the right boot. I don't have any pain or tightness with my left boot at all. I've tried wonder balsam on the inside and outside of the boots seams, massaging, stuffing the boot with a soda can. I found that a large tennis ball works better for some reason. For about three months, I've tried walking around in them an hour a day with two layers of socks and bandaids over my foot where the seams are to prevent the digging. I don't have a hair dryer and I also tried putting adhesive mole skin over the seam inside the boot. Nothing is working. I read somewhere online that someone else was having the same issue and said that it could be a defect. By the time I first read that, it was too late for me to return them. I'm considering bringing the boot to a cobbler.

I've broken in several pairs of leather work boots and leather combat boots. Folks will tell you to soak them in water, or put bags of ice in them and freeze them. Look, if you want to have your boots last a long time and have the best fit possible there's only two things to do. Wear them for longer periods of time over time, and keep them conditioned. She's right, it just takes time and patience. If you rush it, you can damage the leather or end up with a weird fit. Wear them slowly over time, and keep up on the mink oil. It's worth it in the long run.

I don't waste time, I put them right away and see where they are going to hurt. I put Band-Aids right away where I know any shoe will cause blisters due to bending or rubbing. I also carry additional Band-Aids of different sizes and the moment I feel any discomfort I put a Band-Aid on my foot for that spot. I will wear the shoe for a week, so those Band-Aids (cloth ones, not plastic) that I put on I am not removing them during that week. I also did this when I bought myself a new pair of Fly-London's in Spain while on a 2.5 week holiday visiting my best friend.

Thank you for this video! If you haven't already can you film a shoe collection video? I'd love to see it! My aunt bought me a pair of Newton Docs in 2017 for my bday and I wore them to school not thinking much of it other than the fact that it was super hard to tighten at first. I think I blocked out the pain I had when I first wore them. After many blisters for months they fit like a glove as long as I wear medium thick socks, otherwise the seam will give me a blister. I recently bought black patent 1460s and the seam near the footbox is so tight! I wore them around the house for a couple days but recently had a procedure done on one of my toes so I haven't been able to wear them for a month or so. I've been packing them tightly with folded up socks (I fit 5 pairs of varying thicknesses in each boot) and leaving them to sit after I applied a light coat of castor oil a couple weeks ago. After I break in my new bad boys I might look into the 1461s cause I always liked Oxford heels and thought they might be a cute edition for everyday although I heard they're infamously harder to break in as the shorter back is much stiffer. I was also looking at the Mary Jane's but idk if they're the same way 😬

Hi I'm thinking of getting the Multi coloured 1460 pascal boot's, can i use the doc Martin's wonder balm on them??

Hi there, my first Dr Martens are no Leather Boots. Don’t know how to describe - english is not my first language. Maybe Kind of a shiny synthetic/plastic Material with ribbed Fabrik on the Inside. Wore them First for a dogwalk and had no idea how Bad a Dr Marten can hurt. Had a terrible already ribbed blister on the back of my foot 😢 Since than i havend touched the Docs. Any advice? All I read About Breaking in is about leather boots. Does this also Work for mine? The Model is called 26887 (1460 Gloss Vegan).

Hey thanks for this this is super helpful, I just got my first pair of docs and want to break them in with minimal trauma 😂 I just wanted to clarify one point - the initial wear (when you’re assessing where it hurts) is this done with just bare feet? Or w the doc double socks?
@SnugMuffinn2 жыл бұрын
I got my first pair too on Christmas!! I would not recommend doing anything in these bare foot. Just do regular socks for the initial wear to figure out what hurts, then do thick/double socks while breaking them in normally 👍
@OliviaBrittanyGrace2 жыл бұрын
Hey 👋 thank you! Oohh defo not bare feet. Just any socks doesn’t have to be doc socks. You just want to see where they hurt on your feet as everyone will be a bit different. You will get an idea where they hurt quite quickly 🤭 good luck x x x

@OliviaBrittanyGrace2 жыл бұрын
I have the Sinclairs too in white. They still do require breaking in but it definitely wasn’t as harsh as the jadon. I still massaged the heel of the boot especially as that’s where the sinclairs got me the most! Good luck and have a lovely vacation 🥰 x

For some people while the leather breaks in, yes. I’ve had the same problem with most boots of different brands that I’ve bought over the years.

Do I have to wait for my blisters to go away to try the pad thing bc it still hurts. 😭
@100cds32 жыл бұрын
I would've thought that using a pad would've slowed down the breaking in process and wouldn't have moulded to ur foot properly???
@OliviaBrittanyGrace2 жыл бұрын
You would think so but no, massively helps to protect your foot and still moulds no problem. I just found without in the past it’s taken longer but that could have been because I was bleeding and so sore that I could not bear to put them back on my feet for a few weeks!
@100cds32 жыл бұрын
@@OliviaBrittanyGrace ohh I understand now! I'll give it a go- I was using those silicone heel things to stop my feet from getting chewed up by the boots. how long do you keep the pad in there until it's comfortable to take it out and wear them normally?

@carolbia953 жыл бұрын
I bought them second hand and can't return them 😩*
@OliviaBrittanyGrace3 жыл бұрын
Ahhh no what a shame that's so frustrating! Usually second hand are so much better because they have been broken in for you. I'm not sure what docs u have, some you can take the insole out to make more room if you are finding them a bit narrow, have you tried taping up your big toe and wearing them bit by bit? You could also cut a sanitary towel to fit where the boot Is rubbing your toe. It's such a shame because they are an amazing shoe they can just cause pain in the beginning. Wish I could help you out more! Hope they stop rubbing you real soon! Let's hope your big toe hardens to them 🙃🤦♀️good luck xx
@carolbia953 жыл бұрын
@@OliviaBrittanyGrace they were only worn once by the girl who sold them to me, so I'm trying to hold on to the hope I just need to break them in. They are the Jadon Smooth Leather. I have tried using sanitary towels but it's worse because I'm left with even less room on the top and I think I'm not supposed to take off the insole, I tried to see if it came off and it didn't. My toes are ok, I can even "play the piano" with them while standing, the only problem is my big toe touching the front, which causes discomfort when I walk. I am trying to break them in by wearing them around the house with winter socks. I hope this will do the trick eventually. Thank you so much for your help! 🥰
@savannahwhitaker78042 жыл бұрын
i’m having the same problem, do you have an update? :)
@carolbia952 жыл бұрын
@@savannahwhitaker7804 yes! I kept wearing winter socks and eventually, it became less painful to wear the boots because they stretched a bit and got adjusted to my feet. I just always have to make sure I wear them with thick socks (if I wear normal socks, the boots hurt my feet from rubbing, especially on the big toe). However, I must say they are NOT the most comfortable shoes I own (not even close). 😅And I guess they will unfortunately never be! 🥴
