Some of the worst advice I've experienced was in the tech industry. Many will tell you that you need this need that. When you look through the smoking mirrors you find its all about their own job security and alot of them haven't even followed their own advice. Vid was on point.

I've been stuck in IT Helpdesk (service desk, desktop, tech support, call center, etc etc etc) for many years . Many companies see my resume with no degree or certification and that's as far as it goes. I do not even get the time of day because I don't have a piece of paper. It's always been low pay and getting worse due to inflation. Its frustrating and maddening. Darn near cried when you said helpdesk is a blackhole...... it IS! You already had my attention, now you have more of my respect! I've gotta break free from this. The challenge I face is no money for an education and then no certification or degree, its back to the got to have credit to get credit. But that has not stopped me and I'm still moving onward until I am free at last.

Are there any parallel or upward mobility IT positions you can move to within your own company? No better time to find a great job than when you already have one. It's all about marketing and selling yourself like Boyd mentions. Us IT guys get too caught up in the weeds and trees to see the forest. Hope this helps somewhat.

Yo I went from working in a factory and serving to making 26.50 in a weird IT field lol… I’m in parking and there is no training for it.. but me watching professor messer videos and getting the courage to pay for me A+ certification got me into IT.. this is my 1st year and now that I’m in the options seems limitless!!!

I just wanted to thank you Boyd for your content. I am 21 years old and have been struggling with figuring out how to make that transition into a 6 figure role. I am currently grinding two tech support jobs (one of which I just got and am starting the onboarding process) and am now making 6 figures but I am working towards the GRC side of cybersecurity like you have mentioned in the video and have talked to one of the advisors at Baxter Clewis Academy to get the training to make the switch this year. All of the info you have presented is true and was also advice that I have received but have always felt some way about. Your content is truly eye opening✊🏾

He has some good points, but just because this was true for one person, doesn’t mean it’s a one-size approach. College degrees and certifications are still important.

I'm not sure why people don't look into colleges that give vouchers for certs. You can get an associates degree without paying a dime. There are several community colleges that do this and have work programs with companies in the area. There is no one thing that gets you into IT. Also, yea there are DOZENS OF CERTS NOT WORTH CRAP.
@BoydClewis
@BoydClewis Жыл бұрын
Because a cert doesnt get you a job. You still need skills and job interview. Lol a degree or cert doesn't provide any of that.

@@BoydClewis I agree. Sadly, getting those magical pieces of paper get you past HR to even get an interview. Its why I'm glad my job allows internships for new techs to get hands on experience installing, troubleshooting network equipment or any pieces of tech in my line of work. Its a lot easier to do well in interviews when you have hands on experience, or that's what helped my at least.

I’m stuck in that hole. LinkedIn recruiters only send desktop support and Tier 2 helpdesk roles based on my 2 years of experience. Transitioning is difficult but difficult things are almost always worth conquering.

I like your overall stance but of course we all know you need an interview to then get a job - but taking the A+ for me personally DID help me develop and grow in my IT knowledge and skills SO THAT when I had the interview I could speak intelligently. Also at 07:39 is a very brash comment & is pretty foolish to be honest. If I got a 4 year degree in Left handed puppetry than maybe that piece of paper is worthless if I’m not a puppeteer, but bad take man. Bad take.
