“Any great melody is within an octave”. That is a great quote! I have always thought small / tiny one-octave shapes were the way to go for me for the major scale. This video gave me even more reasons to think so / and to apply the same concept to the pentatonic scales. My brain can’t deal with five monstrous shapes. I can handle a tiny shape that I manipulate / vary it, and jump around to the different root notes on the neck to play it. In my brain, I store the two ways of playing the major scale as “playing it to the right”, and “playing it to the left”. (Lousy terminology, I know). Then I lean to the right one fret when getting to the B string. 😂 Thank you!

This was extremely helpful. I have a medical condition that effects my short term memory making it difficult to memorize several scales and modes. Memorizing two shapes has really unlocked things for me here! Thank you for posting!!

I'm truly glad this helped. We guitar players tend to make things difficult for ourselves with larger 3 octave scale patterns and boxes.

I have said your videos are great too many times so this time I'll explain why :P The way you explain everything makes it obvious you are passionate about it, which translates to me really well and makes me exited to pick up my guitar and understand everything you're saying! And then I'm blown away that I have more amazing tools to create songs with!!!!!!

Your method reminds me a lot of another scale patter generator thing I saw online. They essentially show you 2 patterns and then give you the "warp up" trick when you get into the G, B, and E strings. Good stuff. I should dig up that's website and post it here.
@axeofcreation11 жыл бұрын
Glad you dig them!

Hope it helps. Takes a little time to really sink in. But it definitely opens things up. Plus this concept can be applied to every scale/mode (except its three patterns). Let me know if this helps.

+axeofcreation its exactly what I'm doing now. it's exactly what I needed to move forward with guitar again. Been kinda in a stand point. I got a pinched nerve in my neck that goes down my right arm. Been having a chiropractor work on it. small progress but Im getting back into guitar again. This video picked up right where I got off. Now I do my stretches and play.

Yes, it can also apply to any scale or mode. They'd would just have an extra pattern.

@neils688 жыл бұрын
I practice scales in box positions. When I'm playing and soloing I don't think about boxes and patterns. I go purely by feel subconsciously.
@axeofcreation8 жыл бұрын
+Neil St And that's great. A lot of players for go by "feel" but that tends to be from a melodic and rhythmical standpoint. If all you (you in the general sense) do is practice within boxes, muscle memory will start to dominant your subconscious playing.

I can already play solos out of my pentatonic box because I play every song from other bands as well as tool in Drop D.
@musicservices438610 жыл бұрын
This is quite vague of a request, but could you make a video on the amount of "Theory" the Beatles knew. And perhaps an explanation on how they managed to keep coming up with ideas, and keep it interesting WITHOUT knowing sed theory... I feel strongly they knew a modest amount of theory, but found a way to take ideas from other peoples music. I mean you don't just write "Michelle" on a whim...
@axeofcreation10 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for how much "theory" they knew but I would venture more than you'd think. But they had a residence in Germany where they played 8 hours a night. That's a lot of music to learn and play. You learn that much material you're bound to learn a lot about song structure, melody, and chord progressions
@musicservices438610 жыл бұрын
axeofcreation I was thinking the same thing. The Hamburg gigs definitely shaped their songwriting abilities. On another note, I am recently discovering Max Martin. A songwriter/producer that has written a ridiculous amount of #1 hits. Not that they are all my style by any means, but their is something fascinating about being able to constantly write hits. Someone needs to do an analysis of his songwriting/producing. Anyways thanks a lot of responding. Your lessons are great.
@13StJimmy9 жыл бұрын
Honestly id like to know that too but I seriously don't think anybody can teach you what the Beatles had they just had "it" yea know
@msfogg-ch9kp7 жыл бұрын
what i try to do is more or less anticipate the tones in my head before actually playing them. you know like when you can hear the music in your head beforehand. so when playing solos, of course i also use the pentatonic scale and blues scale and whathaveyou, but i really try not to. just like someone in the comment section already said, it can really limit your creativity...
@axeofcreation7 жыл бұрын
Of course, you should always try and achieve that.
@Felsenherzz10 жыл бұрын
awesome teacher....these boxes are dangerous and can kill your creativity if you don't know how to break free.
@axeofcreation10 жыл бұрын
break those chains! Thanks!
@connorreviere430610 жыл бұрын
I feel like the easiest way to break out of those same shapes would be to learn your modes, although that is much more intensive than the procedures you suggest in the lesson. Also there is a serious lack of decent explanations regarding modes, it seems the majority of videos would have viewers believe that they can simply play the C major scale beginning on different notes and they are magically playing modal- and unfortunately it is nowhere near that simple. Although for the sake of those lessons, I feel like the theory of modes would be more clear if they would give each mode starting with the same tonic, instead of progressing through them for the sake of avoiding accidentals. For instance, instead of explaining modes by using C major and beginning on different notes, they should go through and give each mode with C as the starting point. So instead illustrating C ionian, D dorian, E phrygian, etc. it should simply be C ionian, C dorian, C phrygian etc. so that the pattern of tones and semi-tones is more clearly illustrated.
