As a kid of 10 in the seventies my uncle and grandpa taught me alot about explosives,How to shoot, hunt fish,and fire a howitzer etc, all the things a kid needs to know. My uncle, ex military and a miner, showed me how mining worked by doing exactly what this guy is doing, exactly! Years later a good mate bought a remote property somewhere in Australia. He wanted to build a small house in one of the cragy areas. We,he, I and numerous good mates, have built a 6 bedroom 3 story house / Cave. We kinda upscaled this technique a 'little bit ', just a tad. When the temperature is hitting 46° in the shade it's a steady mid teens in the lounge and bedrooms . Anything is possible with the right tools/skills and most importantly, Attitude.

Over 30 years ago , my Father & I, were removing from the garden a large wedge shaped section of the garden to build a car port. We found a large rock that was about 2 meters in diameter. We had drilled about 20 holes in it to try to split it. We put in steel pins at try to burst it and hit them with hammers, that didn't work. We were working on it early on a Sunday morning , when my Grandfather turned up with a shotgun shell, he had replaced the shots with a single lead shot. We drilled one hole out a bit larger and put the shell in it , he then hit the shell with a hammer and the blast split the rock. Shortly the neighbors were out of their houses wondering what the load bang was. We said it was the rock splitting.

Use eye and face protection. Drill holes in a line along or with the grain of stone.(looks like wood grain only less obvious) get oak or ash dowels and insert them into holes they should be tight and have to be tapped in. Soak tapped in dowels with water. Let wet sponges rest over holes. Works faster when temp gets freezing at night/day.

Clever... But next time, draw a line on the rock or concrete, and take your hammer, and hit the rock on the line, starting at one end, work your way to the other end. These hammer hits do not need to be hard and heavy hits, just many of them... When the sound changes from higher pitched "PING", to a "THUD", give one last hard and heavy hit with the hammer, at the opposite end your last hit was that you heard the sound change to a "THUD", and hit right on the line, and the rock or concrete with fracture right along that line. Often times, the fracture line will appear as if it was cut with a machine, due to how flat it is, not always, bit often... The thicker the material is that you are trying to fracture, the longer the tapping will take. A 3 foot thick by 10 foot long slab of concrete, may take 5 to 10 minutes to split down that fracture line. The harder the rock material, the faster the fracture line works.. Good luck...

very good idea . I advise you to add water to the hole several times and let it be absorbed by the rock to maximize the effect of the pressure. the incompressible water will have the effect of redistributing the pressure of the explosion in a more efficient manner.

The top of a BIG rock was sticking up out of the ground in the bottom of the hole where my septic tank was to go. I hammer-drilled a series of holes a few inches apart around the perimeter of the rock-top at the dirt level. Then I hammer-drilled two larger holes (1/2" x 4" deep) straight down from the top. I blew the dust out of the holes like in this video. Then I put a fuse in each hole and packed 100 grains of black powder in each hole. The two fuses were exactly the same length. I filled the holes to the top with sand. I put an upsidedown wash basin over the rock with cast iron weights on top. I twisted the fuses together and lit them and climbed the ladder out of the hole quickly. After it blew, the wash basin was shredded and the top of the rock was blown clean off, flush with the ground. Not the easy way but it was fun and it worked.

This is ONE way, reasonably easy but not necessarily the cheapest or the safest option. Use a larger drill bit (12 to 20mm, the larger the better but depends what your tool can handle), than insert a dry wooden stick of the exact same diameter into the hole and start pouring water on top of it. It takes a while but it will eventually split the boulder.

I had to chuckle a little bit when "the easy way" entails owning machining equipment and fabricating the tool first. That said, a single .22 will drive a nail in concrete, so the power is there to be exploited. I like the idea of the weight that the charge cannot overcome as a breech block. Your guards seem completely workable to me. It does not look very controllable as to what breaks where from what I could see. Pretty cool.

I recently took out the concrete Boulder that I used to bolt our mailbox too and it was a little bit more than twice as heavy as I could lift. I drove six holes in it and I used six railroad spikes to wedge my way down in there, and yes this would have been much faster but exploding rocks can get kind of dangerous especially if you're around cars, your kids and your house.

Yes, it is a .22 cal blank, … and it is the percussion from the cap that will break the rock, … having a good, concrete, rock bit is essential, but one need not necessarily have to drill that deep into the boulder, as if after the shells are placed, place a straw, or some type of flexible tube, down into the hole, fill it with water, & place some type of an insulating accouterment in the path of the blast, … that rock will split just like a jeweler cutting diamonds, … they use a “face drill” in the underground coal mines, then tamp the explosive, into place, & then fill the balance of the depth of the hole with a flex bag, and fill it with water, tamp it in tighter, then blast, … the whole “face” of the wall will shatter, then they come in with the mining loader, which claws pretty much everything up off of the floor in front of the face, & then loads it onto a loader transport, … or they buy a miner which hydraulically removes the face, with either a ball type miner, or a drum type miner, … it has the crab claws that rake everything into the back of the mining machine’s container until a loader gets there, a good miner operator can make anywhere between 15, to 70 feet into the face each day, if there is a loader ready to get into position, a few minutes after the previous loader leaves, … depending upon the type of strata they are removing, … then, there is also a short wall miner operation, where the roof, of the mine, is allowed to collapse in behind itself as they mine through while following a vein of whatever ore they are attempting to remove, … it is all, very, very, dangerous/hazardous work, … and more miners have been killed, over the eons, than any other trade, … I would surmise, because the planet is not so hospitable to those looking to disturb Momma Nature’s disposition’s, … breaking rock, depends on its composition, hardness factors, & the locations where you are trying to extract it from, … such as the permafrost areas in the far north of our planet, where methane is being released due to global warming, … of which I do believe that mankind has had a larger part in the resurgence of warming our planet by our movement towards progress, ever forward, yet losing the planet over a few inches of progress is most disturbing, … perhaps, one day our governments will ban all activities regarding the use of any types of fossil fuels, and restrain mining operations to the untold numbers of asteroids in space, … bringing only the proper types of ores in/around our planet, until they could fully make all operations deplorable in space, …

The set screw is there so that the strike is in line. Weights must be for safety reasons.

If you use "Just a rod", that rod will want to go on a solo rocket flight. The big hunk of steel is exactly that - a big hunk that makes the rod too massive for any truly fast movement. The set screw just lock that in there.

The heavy rubber conveyor belt piece they've got is all the protection they need from these blasts. The powder charge in each little case is about equal to a .22 long rifle. And the heavy weight on the end keeps the rod from becoming a projectile.

interesting. I have spent hundreds of hours splitting rock with drilling and wedges/feathers it works ok for a small boulder but a larger boulder needs say 3 drillings and you can lose the wedges in the rubble. But if drilling granite that is not a separate boulder you can spend hours trying to rescue the feathers when the rock does not fully split.

To help not lose your wedges, paint them with flourescent paint so you can find them easily. Then after every break, account for your tools each time before someone distracts you and you forget to find them.

Interesting ... amd a little alarming. Like using a shark-stick on a Great White. There is a commercially produced system called Boulder Blaster, which adds a very useful component. By simply filling the hole with water, the hydrostatic shock amplifies the shattering effect significantly. I wonder if you could try it out?

I heard about a similar technique, I was afraid to try it because one of his friends nearly lost a hand (major injury). I don't remember exactly how they were doing it, but you're improvised blast shield looks pretty effective and safe. I prefer to use more gun powder and be far away from the blast. I'm doing it in a cave, so I'm more nervous about the surrounding rocks moving. Very cool to see how you do it. (Hope you can read English) 🤣

I bought a kit similar to this and am afraid to use it. I have lots of granite rocks to break and fear something going wrong. Instead I try drilling which is very very difficult and then use the wedge and feathers. Am I stupid?

@@cayrick You can run this remotely if you want to be safe. Just setup the steel dovel, build frame you can setup accurately on the ground and then ether just release sledge that is mounted on bearings, or for repeated hits build pulley system that allows you to reset the sledge after each time it hits. That weight on the dovel is pretty required or you turn this into improvised mortar and might shoot the dovel out, then again rock is out to give up before "chamber" pressure get high enough to get that steel rod moving. For bigger bangs maybe 9mm version, though getting hit into primer might be issue.

this kind of device is massively used by italians and french cavers because it is very easy to make and do not require to use explosives prohibited in our country . But you schould have the diameter of the percutor rod closer to the diameter of the hole to increase yield ( not too close cuz it can turn into a projectile ) , AND a metal shield with less than 1 mm of clearance around the rod , because the casings of the nailgun ammunitions can be forced towards the top of the hole by the explosion and sometimes the rubber mat is NOT sufficient to stop them and it will go straight trough your glove / hand or in your face if your face if standing above (it can be complicated to get out if you are 600m below the entrance with one hand only ) . So put a metal shield or large steel washers between the rubber mats , also even if the cartridge is small and does not contain much powder it still emit a bit of carbon monoxide (around 0.055liters of co per cartridge for the black tipped ones so les than a ba10 homemade charge but dont do too much in an unventilated space ) it also works underwater with one catridge if you dip the cartridges in wax and want to be extra deaf . Also we NEVER hold the rod with our hands (if possible ) , use a small cord ( the one of the caving bag for me ) with a cabestan knot to avoid the rod flying around or hold it with something that is not ur hand , and hit it with a hammer with your hand as far as possible , the casing bit going into the hand or face of someone standing right behind the rod is a reacuring problem with unshielded devices .

I did this once or twice as a young guy with just a plain rod and a Hilti charge, the guy I learned it from (pre internet time) had used this method underwater in a cave - he used an upside down bucket full of air to keep his ears out of the water during the blast!

I can see he's using the 22 caliber blanks so I assume the hole is a little bit bigger than the 22 caliber blank but is the rod that's going in there a tight fit cuz it looks like it's actually an interference fit where he has to hammer it down in there and it won't come back out easily, because God forbid the ride your hammering into the hole becomes the bullet and the hole becomes the barrel, and you end up having that thing come shooting up and out. Instead of using a regular Hammer to hit just a rod, why not drill a hole in a large metal slug that will slide over the end of it and act as the hammer kind of like how you would hammer a fence post into the ground, that way if the rod does want to come out it's not just the rod but now it has to push the mass of the Hammer as well and the hammer won't slip off this way or that way.

Ever broken large stones with a pick? I have. That stone would take hours of hard work. Of course a > $150,000 excavator would be easier (depending on access) but that is also a complicated tool.

But then you would be changing the method. Still, this guy is not buying anything, he is building the tools for his method. Also, I asume (but I might be wrong) that you live in USA. Believe me when I tell you that getting some things is not that easy in many other places. I am from Argentina. Arround here, getting (legaly) a simple box of ammo is quite difficult. You don't get them without being registrated nor in any regular market... Anyway, I understand what you are saying, but, personaly, I still don't think it is an "easy" way. Dude... when you start drilling the center hole you need to drill a center hole first to prevent wander since your center on that large barstock is not centered.
