@hisen3.146 a centum which is Roman for 100 is where century comes from. Ya a decade doesn't work, but I never said it did. I don't know about you but I was learned when I was young at school this.

Logic from French: cent is a hundred, starts with C, dix is ten, ends with an X, cinq means five, and I have no way to relate it to V

roman numerals become easier if you know french. C for cent (centum) (100) M for mille (1000). M was a phi Φ (greek letter) in the beginning. Half of Φ looks like a D, thus D is 500.

Or if you know english. We use cent- and milli- to indicate hundred and thousand.

C for century works but D is 500...a decimal comes from the the Latin word for tenth so that doesn't work at all.

- ᚼ was used for 100, and was simplified to ↃIC, which in turn was abbriviated to just C, through influence of the letter C, and the word CENTUM meaning 100, - and 500 was writted with a V in a circle, which ended up looking something like Ð, via D, - 1000 was an X in a circle ⊗\⊕, half of which (visually) looks like Ð, which may have become or influenced D, - alternatively, 1000 was sometimes CIↃ, half of that being IↃ, etc etc same as above..

it's actually D for quingenti but you tried, as well as v for quinque, x for decem, and L for quinquaginta even if the logic of c for centum had occurred to him, that doesn't fit the pattern of how roman numerals tend to work

It’s kinda scary how many people near my age don’t know Roman numerals. I used to practice them with my Da as a kid when TV shows (90s in the UK) used to show you the year they were created in Roman numerals in the credits !
