I've been learning to freestyle the last 2 months and breathing has been the biggest challenge. The 2 keys I figured out that helped me most so far were: 1. Rotate your hips. Notice how his hips aren't facing flat downwards, they rotate back and forth. With hips rotated you don't have to turn your neck so hard to get a better breath. This reduced the number of times I sucked in water. 2. They aren't joking about exhaling. You have to exhale constantly. If you're a beginner you are uncomfortable in the water, your instinct will be to reserve oxygen in your lungs rather than be submerged with empty lungs even for a moment. Also, you feel like it is comfortable to hold your breath when you are starting because you think it's more enjoyable to go long distance before taking a breath. Here's the problem: your muscles (particularly legs) are generating tons of CO2 while working. It is constantly building up in your body. If you don't exhale it, your O2/CO2 levels will become imbalanced, and you reach a state of panic where you feel like you cannot breathe enough. Your desire to breathe is actually not controlled by a need for O2. It is triggered when you have too much CO2, this is subtle but it makes a huge difference. You aren't desperately gasping repeatedly because you want oxygen, it's because you aren't getting CO2 out. So resist the temptation to hold your breath and focus on constantly releasing the CO2 that your muscles are generating. This will enable you to go further and avoid the panic state

Good points, just wanted to another observation that while turning your neck to breathe, the leading arm should be straight and stretched out with legs pointing backwards. Since while breathing and with neck out it would be the leading arm carrying the weight and keeping us afloat
@CC-gv6us5 жыл бұрын
@@deepaksood3234 yes this is true and took me some time to figure out. I believe it is also why most people breathe to the same side as their dominant arm. Because the pull with the stronger arm gives you more time to rotate and hover on your weak arm while taking a breath. Particularly because most people choose which side they like to breathe while they are beginners and their strength is more likely to be one sided.

Thank you sooooo much! I’m 64 and started teaching myself last year to swim by different video swim instructors. I learned to float, back float, even freestyle moving my arms and feet but just couldn’t get turning my head side to side. I can even tread water. I hired a swim instructor but she didn’t get in the water with me and I’m hands on so why am I paying her when I can go back to KZbin. You break it down very plain and simple. I was trying to learn new steps too quickly, so I looked at your video and today I went to the pool and only did bobbing up and down taking a breath like you said. I did that for 30-40 min. Next I will move onto the wall like you said then the kickboard. I’m going to practice one thing until I am comfortable and not push and rush myself. Thank you again! You are an awesome instructor.

I could do all kind of drills and all what so ever for very short lengths exhousted. This breathing is the most simple and logic issue in swiming why makes this video most valuable. Doing Bobs, bobs and bobs every time you enter the pool is the main key point. 🙏

This is a good video.thank you. However, there is no mention of hip rotation at all. When I was a teen ages ago, I learned freestyle except the breathing part. I can swim the pool length without having to gasp for air but that did not make any sense. After nearly 25 years later, I again took swimming classes and as early as the 1st 2 sessions, heavy emphasis was given on hip rotation. Like what the heck! There were drills early where you have a buoy in front of your outstretched arm while doing purely kicks and maintaining a sideways body position (like swimming facing the wall). When you hip rotate, your spine stays straight, and together with your neck and head your body moves/rotates as a whole unit and naturally half of the face clears the water line enough for me to breathe. Alas it made perfect sense. This made me realize the mistake I had when I was a teen trying to ballisticaly swing my neck to one side (while swimming flat on my belly-- not rotating) was a doomed technique from the start. Rotate the hips and everything else followed naturally. Later on I discovered a device by Finis which you attach to the lumbar area. It's a tube with a ball inside. When you swim, you have to rotate enough so that the ball inside falls to the other end of the tube and produces a sound transmitted to you through the water and you are cued if you are rotating your hips enough. It was a nice to have for me already device at that point because again Hip rotation was emphasized as early as the 1st 2 sessions. Again thank you for this video.

So, it looks like breath out through nose and breathe in through mouth. Is that correct? Great video and I'll try tomorrow.

Thanks for Sharing the practice of inhale, where I was stuck. I think, this time I will make it, the way you suggested to practice the inhale while staying & practicing for Hand movements & inhale coordination.

I was looking forward to a key aspect (at least for me), but you missed it. Once I breath in and turn my face down, do I start exhaling gradually, or I wait until it is almost time to turn my head to the side to let all the air out? I like this vid very much!

Start exhaling gradually immediately when you turn your face back down...you don't want to then again turn for a breath and have to quickly exhale before breathing back in, that will throw off your rhythm

I tried these drills today for the first time. They are much better than all the exercises that I have been doing so far. It worked nicely although I still need to practice these drills much more often to perfect my position in the water and my kicks while I concentrate on the breathing part. My challenge today was that when I am thinking of my breathing rhythm and keeping my whole body aligned with the water somehow my kicks stop working properly and I feel they become too random . How can I focus on my breathing , my body alignment and my proper kicks all at once ? Any tips ?

Thanks for the comment and watching the video, glad the tips are helping you. To answer your question: don't focus on everything all at once. You need to become confident in one area before you can move to the next. Focus on getting totally comfortable with the breathing first. If your legs stop working while learning to breathe try using fins so that you can master the rhythm of the breath...once you feel confident here, watch my video on how to kick...all the best!
