If you suggest breathing every 2 then I would also tell new swimmers to ensure they are always looking to the same side of the pool. Yes one length will be easier as they will be breathing on their dominant side, however I feel that working both sides of the body adequately is incredibly important to encourage balance. If you aren't doing this then it will affect your body roll and things will cascade from there

I read that bilateral breathing helps so that one can swim better in ocean where waves may interfere with a single side.

It's hard to find a consensus on bilateral breathing, but I do it anyway. Every two just feels like a bit much.

He literally said bilateral breathing as an option but it requires more effort. Breathing every 2 helps with rhythm and I agree with him

Masters and beginning swim coach here…Breathing every two strokes is a poor strategy for new swimmers. They need to be able to develop a well balanced stroke by knowing how to breathe to both sides. Many new swimmers are aspiring triathletes who will find themselves in open water where bilateral breathing is essential to manage unforeseen water conditions and course directions.
@JJBpilot2 ай бұрын
I like the idea of every two strokes, but... as some have said breathe to the same wall every length. That way you breathe to right side one length, the left side the next. Keeps you from getting lopsided, like one "coach" on another tri channel.

Great job overcoming your fear man! GOD bless you and your goals! I'm 48 and learning or trying to swim actual laps. It hasn't been easy, but it's coming along ok by watching videos and going to the pool to practice. I started last year at 47. I had a pool scare/drowning moment at 12 years old. So I can relate for sure. But on the plus side, swimming is a great sport and very rewarding. 🤜🤛💪🏊♂️

@robohippy3 ай бұрын
Well, swimming my over arm side stroke, I see EVERYTHING in the pool. The biggest single problem I see in freestyle, and other strokes is poor core engagement. You can not get the rotational power if your core is not properly engaged. Stand with your heels, butt, and shoulders against the wall. Slip just your fingers just behind your lower spine, then try to pin your fingers, not your whole hand, to the wall. This is proper core engagement. I do enter the water with my hand more rigid rather than relaxed, called knife hand/penetrating hand in martial arts. This is a low profile/low drag position. Before starting the pull, I do open my fingers slightly and cup my hand slightly, maybe similar to palming a basketball. It does provide a little more pull power than straight hand.

I used to run 12 to 15 miles at time 5 times a week but at 50 years of age need to preserve the joints some. I put a pool room inside our house. I have the inground endless pool where you can swim against the current and also the underwater treadmill. I currently swim for 45 minutes and then 15 minutes rest thereafter in separate hot tub. Will this training work with your app program? My goal right now is just to lose fat and increase endurance and then as fat comes off improve technique. I still run 1 to 2 times a week but recovery is 2 to 3 days. I swim everyday 10 days on and then 1 day off and go to 10 day swim again. The 45 minutes I do top swim for about 1 minute and rest about 10 seconds then do again. I also do butterfly type stroke under water and come up. I can go about 1 minute with that also then rest again. I enjoy the water and also it's my room so I do not have to wait on others or have a pool ultra chlorinated.

You would think a "pro" like this would know that there isn't a technique called "freestyle". Freestyle means to use whatever style you like. Since it's been known to be the fastest this usually leads to people using the breast crawl technique.

Put your hair up. Then get your hair wet with non-chlorinated water (you should be showering before you enter the pool) then put your cap on and that will minimize/prevent your hair from soaking up the chlorinated water. Then rinse (or wash) your hair after. That will definitely help. Also make sure your cap fits well over your long hair. You can actually get caps that are specifically for folks with long hair. I like the silicone ones best versus the cheapo latex ones. I feel like they pull my hair less and are easier to get on. Warmer too if you ever decide to adventure into open water.
@biancanichols58333 ай бұрын
Yes, put your hair up, use a cap. You can also use a very light amount of leave in conditioner in your hair before putting your cap on. Of course wash, rinse and condition after swimming to help protect your hair.
@keniamadrigal17982 ай бұрын
Swimmer with long hair here: wash your hair after every practice. I swim 3-4 times per week and my hair isn't damaged. I do use top quality salon shampoos, conditioner and hair mascaras. Also, getting a hydrating treatment every 4-6 months keeps your hair in optimal conditions to avoid pool chemicals from hurting it. Use sun protector if your pool is outdoors and hair oil for your ends after each wash as these are so susceptible to breaking and drying.
