I just started watching and this is the third video. I see a lot of truth to your technique. Though i just started, i hope to be a testimony. Thanks for making it free because for someone like me who is living below poverty line in Nigeria, this will save my life and dream of having the kind of singing voice i only thought was possible in developed countries ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Hi Timo, thanks for sharing this technique. I tried and realised that if you make the chest cavity expand naturally the airflow is inwards. Could you explain pls how to support the exhalation because the sound needs air going out of the body? do you compensate with the other muscles the air pressure? I understand that we want to engage the muscles not air pressure but also we need to form pressure to produce the sound and expanding the rib cage actually decreases the pressure in the body. Thanks in advance!

Hi Timo, just discovered your channel - I'm in my 50's and finally trying to improve my ageing voice with some proper method and enjoying the anatomical explanations you are providing. One question I have is how long do you need to do the exercises (such as the larynx yawn and the breathing from this lesson) before you start to see some results in your voice? DO the results just automatically come at some point or do you need to actively change how you sing? Maybe you deal with this in later videos, I've only just started watching your channel. Thank you in advance!

Hi Paul, you can make great progress with your voice regardless of your age. I can't really say how long it takes, because it is always highly individual. It is depending on how you are build, how often you practice and how quick your muscles respond to training. And yes you have to apply these exercises into your singing that's why we are training them in an isolated exercise first. Actively changing things that were holding you back is crucial for your development. That's a trap a lot of people fall into if you are training your muscles and isolated muscle movements but then you don't apply them into songs and other things your want to sing. Hope this helps. 😀

Really informative video!! I have one question. Why do you need to expand the ribcage as we go higher and not keep it (very) open throughout your whole range. Is that just not sustainable and efficient or is there another reason to it?
@timoparker
@timoparker 4 ай бұрын
You can definitely keep the ribs open without expanding them more towards the higher notes when you sing. The open close movement in exercises just helps to build the muscles quicker (more repetition)💪

Hello Timo if I can get you well does that mean that our stomach has nothing to do in singing only the rib cage

my rib cage only expand as I breath in...how do you do it while you singing? i dont get it, or it is because I dont have strong muscles there? I have no control over there. Thanks
@timoparker
@timoparker 5 ай бұрын
You probably have already a bit of muscle there but you might not have the coordination yet to use them without breathing. Over time when the intercostal muscles get stronger and your coordination gets more defined you will be able to open and close your rib cage without having to inhale a massive amount of air. Just keep practicing and exploring and you will find the sensation. And don't worry you are not the only one. A lot of my students have trouble finding this movement in the beginning.

Just wondering... about the chest breathing exercises. I think they are the same muscles used in a "kiai" or in "panting like a dog". I used to do it for vocals when I was young. I was doing it following your demonstration and I realized that in holding the breath, I kept it at the same level by moving a slight bit of air back and forth in-order to keep the path open and not with a glutaral blocking. Your input on these thoughts, please?
@timoparker
@timoparker Жыл бұрын
Hi there, the intercostal muscles are also active when you do different breathing techniques like "pant like a dog". A very small amount of air can circulate due to the pressure change in the lungs. It happens because of change of the "container" (lung) size. It's more of a passive process that naturally occurs without actively in- or exhaling. It's a great observation you made there! Thanks for sharing 😀
