Thanks Mark, I have found your videos very helpful over the last year and a half that we have been trying to keep shrimp. It has been a frustrating journey for us as we have tried to move into Bee shrimp. we have tanks where I think parameters are perfect but we still have slow but steady die offs, and it is getting to a point where we want to give up.

What's the theory behind no water changes?
@MarksShrimpTanks5 ай бұрын
So the idea is that no water changes keeps things way more stable for the shrimp. Bee shrimp are super sensitive, and water changes can mess with the pH and other stuff, which stresses them out and can screw up their molting. By not doin water changes, the pH stays down for years longer because you're not pullin out the natural acids in the active soil. The substrate also acts like a mini filter, soaking up impurities. I keep feeding super minimal too, so there's less waste. The shrimp seem way happier like this, with more babies survivin and stayin healthy! 😊
@grantmurphy78935 ай бұрын
Thanks for the reply Mark. I understand you. But what do you do amount nitrate rising?
@MarksShrimpTanks5 ай бұрын
In this setup there is little to no nitrate because your feeding so much less, shrimp need minimal food from us, the odd leave which is also a food source and just biofilm on the glass. If you see someone saying they feed there shrimp 3 times a day with x brand of shrimp food chances are they are just after your money.

Hi Marks, my crystal shrimp tank have been setup for a few months, but in March all of them died for the suddenly high temperature. I didnt change anything just add a cooler(Using old filter with no disinfect ). But I found the shrimps keep dying and baby no grow up, I am sure the tank in pH 5.8 with no swing using ada, temp 23 degrees, no over feeding or over water change.
@shrimpkeepermatt19894 ай бұрын
Is it bacteria overload? Should I reset the tank? How to deal with the tank ,filter media and soil?
@MarksShrimpTanks4 ай бұрын
ok this is what I do in emergencies like this, I do a massive water changer of over 80%, at this point you have nothing to lose, make sure your filters are clean and you have a couple of leaves in the tanks, this part is important ... no feeding for a few weeks, you might still get the odd death after this so its important you remove all dead bodies as soon as you see them, give it a go and see how you get on.

I was speaking to a freind recently that does it almost the same way as I do but he stil uses a tiny amount of powdered foods once a week if he see no visable biofilm on the glass, he also uses just snowflake. 👍

Hi Mark, are you doing completely no more water changes? Aren't you afraid that the water will go bad after some time (maybe months)? And using no powdered foods, how is your baby shrimp survival rate? I use powdered food once a week maybe, but only a very tiny bit. Even the smallest amount is enough in my opinion. Maybe I should use it less often, if the baby survival rate isn't affected.
@MarksShrimpTanks5 ай бұрын
The no waterchange thing was a tip I got from 2 Boa breeders and I actually notice my water gets cleaner after time not dirtier like you think it would, the soil is a big sponge with negativly charges Ions this is what helps clean the tanks, in the end you will loss buffering /cleaning capacity in the soil but it will take years and years. My baby shrimp survival rate has went up a lot since I started doing this.

@@MarksShrimpTanksWow, that's something I wouldn't expect. Since I am a very big fan of following your advice, I'll try the no water chance (or maybe almost never) on my cull tank. If it's successful I can do it on the rest. I will reduce the powdered foods also, to see what it does. Thanks Mark!

Hey Mark what’s your opinion on pH? I’ve personally found that my shrimp much prefer the low pH (below 6) but I feel im always in a constant battle to keep it low. For some reason my substrate just doesn’t last- I constantly have to top it up (I use a small UGF that I replace along with a bottom substrate). Amazonia and a bit of akadama
@MarksShrimpTanks5 ай бұрын
yeah you want to get it low around 5.5 - 5.8 seems to be the go to number for most proffesional breeders I know. I fyou watch all of the video follow the tips your soil will last much longer because there are no water changes

My experience: Do weekly 10% water change (to remove toxins), feed almost all powdered food (=feed the tank/baby's), 2 days no food (if you have about 10 shrimp feed 3-4 times a week), for soil Akadama (hard version) will do perfectly (save your money). When feeding always watch your shrimp, if few are interested, skip feeding 1-2 days. Always have leaves in your tank (catappa). In summer stop feeding/feed less if your temperature is 26C and up (caridina shrimp), be sure to have leaves etc. in your tank which do not polute the water (snowflake food).

I have failed many times, trying to keep and breeding that crystal shrimps variants, many shrimps die, and lots money wasted, by my hand, so sad, if i remembering my mistakes. But, I'm loving them, and guess what? I have not only success, but easily thriving neocaridina, Sulawesi and guppies, and I'm also sure if i have koi fish (but in fact i don't have them yet) I'll have big success too. Yes, you got the point, our home water is relatively hard. But i have try many times, not using our home water, form buying ro water, and others techniques, still failed. After so many years, now i realize what the fundamental mistakes inside my aquariums when keeping crystal shrimps. Because I'm loving them, hope can try again start from this year. Thanks so much, Marks, this video make me sure about what's is the fundamental mistakes inside my aquariums, which prevent me to have thriving crystal shrimps, till today.
